CBS Renew/Cancel Watch: 'CSI: Cyber' is Certain to be Canceled

Entertainment Weekly

Welcome to the CBS Renew/Cancel Watch of the fall season! All scripted, primetime shows are included in the prediction table below once they have premiered for the season. An analysis of any new prediction changes follows. My current predictions are as of October 17, 2015.

The key to the right indicates which colors are associated with each prediction. The data in the table includes season lows, highs, and averages (Adults 18-49 demo), as well as the year-to-year changes for returning shows that have not already been officially renewed or canceled. These are provided for reasoning with and understanding my predictions. The shows are ordered by their season averages against only other scripted CBS shows.

Limitless: CBS's most promising new drama so far this season (only in comparison to Code Black, to be fair) saw a sizable decline this week as it faced new direct competition from NBC's dominant Chicago Fire at 10pm, which drew a 1.8 in the key demo versus a 1.4 for Limitless (down 17.5% w2w). If the ratings don't bounce back or at least stay consistent in the coming weeks, a second season may not be so easily guaranteed. We'll see how it performs over the next few weeks before assuming it indeed has a 'limit'. I announced that I would make a more concrete prediction in this edition of the R/C Watch. I'll continue observing its patterns as the season progresses, but as of now, I predict Limitless as "Likely to be Renewed."

Blue Bloods: The show has kept a pretty consistent profile over the course of the season thus far, for the most part mirroring its performance from last season. The drama dropped slightly to a 1.1 this week after a solid string of 1.3s, but it could still adjust up (final ratings pending) and, even if not, I don't think this slight dip is too worrying. Similar to Madam Secretary on Sundays, Blue Bloods is the bright spot of its night and I don't see CBS ending its run yet. As of now, I believe this show is a reliable enough asset for CBS Fridays and is "Certain to be Renewed."

CSI: Cyber: Two weeks into its sophomore season, I have decided to predict Cyber as "Certain to be Canceled." While the show was pushed back an hour due to NFL overrun on Sunday night, there was, again, little noticeable interest in this installment with it dropping to a lowly 0.8 rating in the key demo, down a sharp 20% w2w. CBS should be actively drawing up plans to revamp their Sunday line-up, starting with the deadly Cyber unit, which unfortunately doesn't lend much to the CSI legacy.
