Wednesday TV Ratings 8/30/23: Big Brother and America’s Got Talent Decline, Superfan and MasterChef Rise (UPDATED)

Ratings Analysis: CBS's 'Big Brother' (0.60, -0.02) dropped by two-hundredths when compared to last Wednesday's installment, but it still had no problem topping the night in the Adults 18-49 demographic. In the 9 p.m. hour, 'Superfan' (0.18, +0.04) finally recovered after declining for the past two weeks. The 10 p.m. 'So Help Me Todd' rerun (0.13) was a hundredth higher than the week prior. 'America's Got Talent' (0.45, -0.05) lost a few ticks on NBC and led into repeats of 'Night Court' (0.22/0.16) and 'Chicago PD' (0.15). Fox's 'MasterChef' (0.35, +0.01) grew by a hundredth. ABC had a mini-marathon of 'The Conners' (0.24/0.20/0.18/0.15) that decreased in size as the evening went on. The 10 p.m. time slot was occupied by an encore of 'The Rookie' (0.13). The CW was not too far behind 'Rookie' with reruns of 'Whose Line Is It Anyway?' (0.07/0.09) and 'Penn & Teller: Fool Us' (0.09).

Finals Update: 'Big Brother' (+0.1) adjusted up.

GREAT NEWS: EVERY EPISODE, EVERY RATING

The "Every Episode, Every Rating" series takes a look at the highs and lows of a program during its full run on broadcast television. Praise or criticism is in reference to the show's performance in the Nielsen ratings.

During the mid-2000s and early 2010s, NBC seemingly mastered the art of the workplace sitcom. Programs like The Office, Parks & Recreation, and 30 Rock ran for multiple seasons and became staples of Internet culture due to their quotable lines and casts full of chemistry. The only issue is that, outside of The Office, these single-camera comedies struggled to deliver in the Nielsen ratings. Great News emerged in the back-half of the 2010s as a Tina Fey production that centered on a local news crew in New York City. The formula and branding was a shoe-in for the peacock network's environment, but that was not enough to keep News on the air.

Tuesday TV Ratings 8/29/23: Don’t Forget the Lyrics Rises, America’s Got Talent and Beat Shazam Slip (UPDATED)

Ratings Analysis: It was a rough night for 'Beat Shazam' (0.19, -0.03) as the Fox game show slid down to its lowest rating for an August 2023 episode. 'Don't Forget the Lyrics!' (0.22, +0.03) bucked that trend by gaining three-hundredths in the 9 p.m. hour and building on 'Shazam'. 'America's Got Talent' (0.58, -0.02) shed two-hundredths on NBC and was followed by a rerun of 'Quantum Leap' (0.21). ABC re-ran 'Celebrity Family Feud' (0.34), 'Jeopardy! Masters' (0.26), and 'The Chase' (0.20). CBS had encores of 'FBI' (0.20), 'FBI: International' (0.14), and 'FBI: Most Wanted' (0.19), with 'International' sticking out as a weak link. The CW had repeats of 'Penn & Teller: Fool Us' (0.05) and 'Whose Line Is It Anyway?' (0.05/0.05).

Finals Update: The repeat of 'Jeopardy! Masters' (+0.1) adjusted up.

Monday TV Ratings 8/28/23: Claim to Fame and Stars on Mars Rise for Finales, American Ninja Warrior Leads (UPDATED)

Ratings Analysis: With 'The Bachelorette' out of the way, ABC's 'Claim to Fame' (0.33, +0.10) was free to take back the 8 p.m. time slot that helped it grow in the early summer. As a result, the program shot up by a full tenth for its finale and posted its highest rating in over a month. ABC filled the 10 p.m. time slot with a rerun of 'The $100,000 Pyramid' (0.20). On Fox, 'Stars on Mars' (0.17, +0.02) grew by two-hundredths for its season (or possibly "series") finale and led into a repeat of 'MasterChef' (0.15). 'American Ninja Warrior' (0.44, +0.09) surged on NBC and was followed by a 'Weakest Link' encore (0.24). 'Son of a Critch' (0.06, +0.03) and 'Run the Burbs' (0.06, +0.03) climbed higher on the CW. 'Children Ruin Everything' (0.04, -0.02) and 'Bump' (0.03, -0.03) crumbled in the 9 p.m. hour. Reruns of 'NCIS' (0.24), 'NCIS: Hawai'i' (0.20), and 'NCIS: Los Angeles' (0.24) made up CBS's night.

Sunday TV Ratings 8/27/23: US Gymnastics Championships Decent for NBC, NFL Preseason Leads, The $100,000 Pyramid Rises for Finale (UPDATED)

Ratings Analysis: NBC's broadcast of the 'US Gymnastics Championships' (0.33) was passable for the network but more on the softer side. At 9, a rerun of 'America's Got Talent' (0.17) was a hundredth lower than last week. On Fox, a low-rated 'Food Stars' repeat (0.15) led into a strong 'Texans v. Saints' NFL Preseason game (0.91). The game easily topped the night and was over two-tenths higher than Friday's 'Lions v. Panthers' match-up (0.67). On CBS, 'Big Brother' (0.62, -0.01) and 'The Challenge: USA' (0.30, -0.02) dipped slightly when compared to their Thursday-evening telecasts. CBS also had the '2023 TOUR Championship' (0.51) and '60 Minutes' (0.42) in the 7 p.m. hour. A repeat of 'NCIS: Los Angeles' (0.19) closed out their evening. ABC's 'The $100,000 Pyramid' (0.31, +0.03) tied its season high on finale night and led into another repeat of itself (0.24). The 'America's Funniest Home Videos' encore (0.39) and 'Celebrity Family Feud' (0.37, +0.03) were also up when compared to last Sunday. 'The Chosen' (0.07, +0.01) gained some ground on the CW and was followed by more reruns of 'World's Funniest Animals' (0.06/0.03).

Finals Update: 'NFL Preseason: Texans v. Saints' (+0.1) adjusted up. The repeat of 'Food Stars' (-0.1) adjusted down.

Saturday TV Ratings 8/26/23: NASCAR Leads the Night as MLB Takes Second, College Football Low (UPDATED)

Ratings Analysis: Though Fox's 'MLB: Regional Coverage' (0.37, -0.03) is used to topping the night without contest, NBC's broadcast of the 'NASCAR Coke Zero Sugar 400' (0.46) slid past 'MLB' and claimed the #1 spot in the Adults 18-49 demographic. On the lower-end of things, ABC's broadcast of the 'SC St. v. Jackson St.' college football game (0.17) was a complete dud that even lost out to a 10 p.m. rerun of CBS's '48 Hours' (0.18). CBS had another '48 Hours' (0.14) at 9 p.m. and an encore of 'NCIS: Los Angeles' (0.12) in the 8 p.m. time slot. 'Great Chocolate Showdown' (0.06, +0.01) picked up a hundredth on the CW. 'Recipe for Disaster' (0.05, +0.01; 0.04, +0.01) was up by the same amount in each half-hour.

Finals Update: 'MLB: Regional Coverage' (+0.1) adjusted up. 'NASCAR Coke Zero Sugar 400' (-0.1), the 9:30 PM episode of 'Recipe for Disaster' (-0.1), and repeats of 'NCIS: Los Angeles' (-0.2) and '48 Hours' (-0.1) at 9 PM adjusted down.

Friday TV Ratings 8/25/23: NFL Preseason Trails Soaring WWE SmackDown, Moonshine Steady for Finale (UPDATED)

Ratings Analysis: Fox's 'WWE Smackdown' (0.78, +0.23) vaulted itself to an insanely-high level for Friday-night standards. The wrestling competition series even blocked CBS's broadcast of the 'Lions v. Panthers' NFL Preseason game (0.67) from taking the #1 spot in the Adults 18-49 demographic, though it was closer race than usual for that top spot. Outside of those two juggernauts, nothing else made more than a whimper. NBC had some modest 'American Ninja Warrior' (0.19) and 'Dateline' (0.20) encores. ABC was slightly lower with reruns of 'Will Trent' (0.17) and '20/20' (0.16). On the CW, 'Moonshine' (0.03, 0.00) held steady for its season finale. 'Family Law' (0.02, -0.04), however, completely plummeted.

Finals Update: 'WWE SmackDown' (+0.1) adjusted up.

Thursday TV Ratings 8/24/23: Miley Cyrus Special Weak, Generation Gap Slips, Big Brother Easily Leads (UPDATED)

Ratings Analysis: 'Generation Gap' (0.31, -0.08) took a hit on ABC and was followed by a rerun of the 20th Anniversary special of 'Jimmy Kimmel Live!' (0.21). In the 10 p.m. hour, a Miley Cyrus special entitled 'Endless Summer Vacation: Continued' (0.16) was unable to bring in many viewers. Fox had slightly better luck with their 'TMZ Investigates' Britney Spears telecast (0.22), but it still barely tied NBC's repeat of 'Password' (0.22). NBC also aired reruns of 'Law & Order: SVU' (0.18) and 'Law & Order' (0.14), while Fox had an encore of 'Name That Tune' (0.19). 'Big Brother' (0.63, +0.01) and 'The Challenge: USA' (0.32, 0.00) were close to even on CBS. Reruns of 'Young Sheldon' (0.25) and 'Ghosts' (0.24) populated the 8 p.m. hour. 'Fight to Survive' (0.05, +0.01) and 'FBoy Island' (0.04, +0.02) perked up on the CW.

Finals Update: 'TMZ Investigates: Britney Spears: Divorce and Despair' (-0.2) adjusted down, as did repeats of 'Ghosts' (-0.1) and 'Name That Tune' (-0.1).

Ratings Analysis: It was series finale night on the CW as 'Nancy Drew' (0.06, +0.01) and 'Riverdale' (0.05, +0.01) gained a hundredth apiece for their respective last episodes. Though neither drama set a new season high, they did avoid dropping for their final broadcasts. Over on CBS, reality offerings 'Big Brother' (0.62, -0.01) and 'Superfan' (0.14, -0.02) dealt with some small declines. 'Brother' topped the night as usual, while 'Superfan' lost to every (non-CW) show outside of the 10 p.m. 'So Help Me Todd' rerun (0.12). NBC's 'America's Got Talent' (0.50, -0.10) shed a full tenth when compared to Tuesday's episode and led into a rerun of 'Carol Burnett: 90 Years of Laughter and Love' (0.19). 'MasterChef' (0.34, +0.02) picked up two-hundredths on Fox and was the third highest-rated broadcast in the Adults 18-49 demographic. ABC had a rerun marathon of 'Abbott Elementary' (0.21/0.20/0.20/0.16) and a lone 'Rookie' encore (0.11).

Finals Update: All shows held their preliminary rounded ratings.

Ratings Analysis: 'America's Got Talent' (0.60, +0.03) grew by three-hundredths when compared to its last original (0.57) and was easily the night's top-rated program. At 10 p.m., a repeat of 'That's My Jam' (0.25) was the highest-rated in its time slot. On Fox, 'Beat Shazam' (0.22, -0.02) and 'Don't Forget the Lyrics!' (0.19, -0.07) dealt with some slippage. CBS had repeats of 'FBI: International' (0.21), 'FBI' (0.19), and 'FBI: Most Wanted' (0.22). ABC had them beat at 8 p.m. with their 'Celebrity Wheel of Fortune' rerun (0.27) and again at 9 with 'Jeopardy! Masters' (0.24). But, the 'Most Wanted' repeat was a good bit above the 10 p.m. encore of 'The Chase' (0.18). The CW got decent mileage out of reruns of 'Fight to Survive' (0.07/0.05).

Finals Update: All shows held their preliminary rounded ratings.

Ratings Analysis: Though 'The Bachelorette' (0.53, +0.12) did not set a new season high on finale night, the ABC reality series still enjoyed a healthy surge and maintained its lead in the Adults 18-49 demographic. NBC's 'American Ninja Warrior' (0.35, -0.04) was the closest to competing with 'The Bachelorette', but it was still nearly two-tenths below it. 'Warrior' led into a rerun of 'Weakest Link' (0.22) that was a hundredth lower than last week's. 'Stars on Mars' (0.15, -0.01) shed a hundredth on Fox and was followed by a 'MasterChef' rerun (0.11). 'Children Ruin Everything' (0.06, +0.02) and 'Bump' (0.06, +0.04) soared to new season highs on the CW. Wednesday TV Ratings 8/16/23: The Wonder Years Drops for Finale, Food Stars Finale Rises as MasterChef Hits Low, Superfan Gets Even More Embarrassing (UPDATED)

Ratings Analysis: ABC sitcom 'The Wonder Years' closed out season two by losing a hundredth at 9 p.m. (0.22, -0.01), even as 'Judge Steve Harvey' (0.30, +0.02) grew by two-hundredths. Things got even worse at 9:30 p.m. when 'Wonder Years' (0.18, -0.04) lost another fistful of Nielsens for its Disney-themed finale. The comedy ultimately went out with a whimper as it led into a 10 p.m. rerun of 'The Rookie' (0.11). On Fox, 'Gordon Ramsay's Food Stars' (0.25, +0.03) enjoyed a nice uptick for its finale and retained a solid amount of a sinking 'MasterChef' (0.32, -0.02). CBS powerhouse 'Big Brother' (0.62, +0.06) grew significantly from Sunday's episode (0.56) and was only a hundredth behind last Wednesday's outing. But, even though it easily topped the night, 'Brother' could not stop 'Superfan' (0.16, -0.06) from taking a sizable post-premiere drop. 'Superfan' retained just 26% of its lead-in and led into another rerun of 'So Help Me Todd' (0.10). The CW's 'Nancy Drew' (0.05, +0.02) picked up two ticks and was followed by a stable 'Riverdale' (0.04, 0.00).
