FOX Renew/Cancel Week 8: ’HouseBroken’ May Face Eviction

Predictions for 12/31/22

Below are the latest renew/cancel predictions for the Fox network in the 2022-23 television season. The numbers listed in the table mark the Nielsen rating low, average, and high for each respective program in the Adults 18-49 demographic. Since the previous update, 'The Simpsons', 'The Resident', and 'Welcome to Flatch' have all posted new season highs. Despite those gains, 'The Simpsons' and 'The Resident' have also garnered new lows in the last month. Sophomore drama 'The Cleaning Lady' has similarly dipped to its lowest rating on record. As always, only scripted programming will be taken into account in this column.

HouseBroken: From a Nielsen ratings perspective, the summer 2021 run of animated comedy 'HouseBroken' was nothing short of disastrous. The series never went above a 0.29 rating in the Adults 18-49 demographic and regularly lost over 50% of its 'Hell's Kitchen' lead-in. In terms of total viewership, not a single episode crossed the 1 million mark. And despite Fox's decision to renew it for a second season, the series was absent for the entirety of summer 2022. It wasn't until the tail-end of the Fall season that it awkwardly reemerged for a Christmas-themed double-pump.

Airing behind a middling installment of 'The Simpsons' (0.37), the first of the two episodes posted a fairly decent 0.26 rating. In all, this is barely any different from the type of mediocre performance that 'The Great North' manages in this timeslot. However, the second of the two episodes dropped to a 0.21 at 9, marking a new series low for the comedy. This type of haphazard scheduling indicates that 'HouseBroken' is not much of a priority for Fox, especially since the series is not slated to air again until the end of May. 'HouseBroken' is Likely to be Canceled based on the Nielsen data currently available and the fact that Fox is content with putting it on hiatus for over a year.

Welcome to Flatch: Even though 'Welcome to Flatch' has proven time and time again to be a Nielsen ratings dud, the Fox network still has high hopes for the sophomore entry. The sitcom was granted a direct NFL lead-in on November 27th, an opportunity that comedies such as 'Duncanville and 'HouseBroken' never received. As a result of this generous gift, the program soared to a series high (0.67 rating) in the Adults 18-49 demographic, posting a rating that was over 200% above its previous high. The problem here is that it retained a measly 29% of its NFL lead-in and crashed back down to a meager 0.20 for the following installment. This is the exact same Nielsen rating that 'Flatch' posted for the episode that aired ten days before the football-boosted one, signaling that the post-NFL showing did nothing to help it grow an audience. This series is Likely to be Canceled and the network's efforts to boost its numbers have failed miserably.

The Cleaning Lady: Earlier in the season, the unsatisfactory performance of 'The Cleaning Lady' could be chalked up to the fact that it was independent of its '9-1-1' lead-in. There were episodes of the drama that rose by a larger amount than '9-1-1' did and there were other times when it dipped as '9-1-1' rose. However, that argument flew out the window when it crumbled to a terrifying new low (0.23) on an evening when a feeble TMZ special (0.24) served as its lead-in instead of the much stronger '9-1-1'. Though it has bounced back since and remains Likely to be Renewed, the series is on shakier ground than it has ever been before. A future downgrade is not out of the question.

Monarch: On December 7th, the Fox network officially CANCELLED country drama 'Monarch' after a single season that consisted of a mere eleven episodes. 'Monarch' began in the 'Likely to be Canceled' category and never shed that distinction due to abysmal ratings. This decision comes as no surprise and serves as a correct prediction for this column.

Jess’s Take: The CW is Full of Woe, Can it Come Back?

Jessica here, back with another Jess's Take.

Back in my podcast TV update, I went into detail of the CW canceling everything in sight. Here's a recap.

The CW had canceled many shows from their lineup, including those with Netflix deals. Here are the following shows leaving the CW airwaves: 4400, Batwoman, Black Lightning, Charmed, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, Dynasty, In the Dark, Legacies, Naomi, The Republic of Sarah, and Roswell: New Mexico, with Riverdale and Supergirl getting renewed for final seasons. One thing I am speculating with the whole slate getting canceled was nothing to do with ratings (although ratings on these shows were pretty much low the entire season, and 0.0 in the key 18-49 demographic on a regular occurrence doesn’t help matters), it has everything to do with the sale of the CW by network partners Paramount (when it was ViacomCBS) and Warner Bros. Discovery (before Discovery acquired WarnerMedia).

Let's start with January when Mark Pedowitz sent an internal memo to corporate headquarters about the sale. On January 5, word got out that Nexstar Media Group was negotiating with the two broadcast partners for a majority stake in the network. According to Variety, this was first reported in the Wall Street Journal. “Nexstar, based in Irving, Texas, is the nation’s largest owner of TV stations and the core affiliate group for the CW in major markets such as New York and Los Angeles.” – Variety. If you have not heard of the NewsNation channel, a recent news network, this is owned by Nexstar. The channel itself used to be known as WGN America.

In late June, Nexstar purchased the CW and now controls 75% of the CW, while Warner Bros. Discovery and Paramount control the other 25%. This led to many cancelations on the network.

Fast forward to now, we have ratings from the now-Nexstar majority owned CW. And it's not exactly looking in the best shape.

The highest rated CW show, All American is pulling in renewable numbers at a 0.13 with less than 500,000 viewers, but it has a successful Netflix deal on its side and a spinoff. Walker follows the spinoff closely behind with a 0.09, but skews older with 748,000 viewers. And that's in A18-49. The rest of the CW is closely behind in 0.0 territory.

Realistically, I don't know if I can see the CW survive much longer in its current state, but with broadcast ratings down across the board, there has to be another way, and I'm not sure about the plans Nexstar has yet.

And this concludes another installment of Jess's Take. Stay tuned for more installments.
