Empire Renewed by FOX for a Sixth Season

FOX has renewed Empire for a sixth season. The drama is down 26% year-to-year in the Adults 18-49 demographic with a 1.37 rating so far. This still makes it one of their higher-rated shows. It is being reported by Variety that Jussie Smollet, who stars on the show as Jamal Lyon, is unlikely to return for the season.

This is a correct prediction for The TV Ratings Guide, and joins The Resident, 9-1-1, Last Man Standing, and the three animated comedies on FOX’s 2019-20 schedule.

ABC Renew/Cancel - April 29: Another Shot of Whiskey Looking Unlikely, Bless This Mess Isn’t That Messy

The ABC Renew/Cancel took a week off last week, but we're back this week with updates on a few pivotal shows, including new sitcom Bless This Mess and ABC's new obsession, Whiskey Cavalier.

Certain Cancellation:
The Fix (0.5, 0.5-0.7)

Likely Cancellation:
For the People (0.5, 0.5-0.6)
Splitting Up Together (0.7, 0.6-0.9)
Whiskey Cavalier (0.6, 0.4-0.9)

Leans Cancellation:

The Kids are Alright (0.9, 0.6-1.4)
Single Parents (0.9, 0.6-1.3)

Leans Renewal:
Bless This Mess (0.8, 0.7-0.9)
How To Get Away With Murder (0.7, 0.5-0.8)
Speechless (0.5, 0.4-0.6)

Likely Renewal:
Fresh Off the Boat (0.6, 0.5-0.7)
The Rookie (0.7, 0.6-1.0)
Schooled (1.0, 0.8-1.3)
Station 19 (1.0, 0.8-1.3)

Certain Renewal:

American Housewife (1.0, 0.7-1.2)
Black-ish (0.8, 0.6-1.1)
The Goldbergs (1.2, 1.0-1.4)
Grey's Anatomy (1.6, 1.4-1.9)

Already Renewed:
The Conners
The Good Doctor
A Million Little Things
Modern Family

Whiskey Cavalier: I was pretty optimistic about the show's future a few weeks ago due to the sheer amount of adoration ABC has for it. However, sometimes networks need to cut their favorites. It's apparent that that needs to happen with Whiskey Cavalier. Even though it had a somewhat-decent start in the slot, it has absolutely fallen apart and is now the lowest of the low among the ABC 10 PM slate, sinking even lower than the certainly-dead The Fix last week. A 0.4 lead-in is certainly not ideal, but that doesn't make its 0.4 last week excusable in any way. ABC won't be taking another shot of Whiskey this May. It's a LIKELY CANCELLATION.

Bless This Mess: The oft-ridiculed sitcom with a seemingly-prophetic title shocked the ratings community by actually having a solid premiere, growing a tenth on its Blackish lead-in with a 0.9 for its series premiere. That's not exactly a hit rating, but for a lineup that's been an absolute garbage fire since The Conners exited stage left back in January, this is more than enough to put it at least in contention. The week two drop to 0.7 doesn't give it much wiggle room, but that's still enough to keep it in talks for a renewal given how decent its retention from Blackish is and how poorly all of ABC's other new comedies are performing. We'll see where it lands this week, but as of now, Bless This Mess isn't off to nearly as messy of a start as I thought it would be. It LEANS RENEWAL.

Station 19: Even though it isn't lighting the world on fire by any means, ABC's Grey's Anatomy spinoff is still a very safe call to come back. I was more hesitant than most, but at this point even I will agree that the show's probably doing enough to come back. I still think it's underperforming, but ABC has so many flop dramas that this is one of the fish in their pond that's the least in need of frying. I'm upping it to a LIKELY RENEWAL.

The Book of Terri - Episode 1.08 - Sixteen (Midseason Finale)

THE BOOK OF TERRI
1X08 - “SIXTEEN”

Written By:
Jessica Boggs

FADE IN:

EXT. HIGH SCHOOL PARKING LOT - DAY

A high school is situated in the northwestern part of West Hartford, a suburb of the capital city of Connecticut.

INT. SCHOOL HALLWAY - DAY

Terri enters the hallway while carrying her backpack full of textbooks. She sees Katie and Natasha and greets them with open arms.

Katie then smiles.

KATIE
Do you know what day it is, Terri?

Terri shrugs in slight confusion.

NATASHA
(happily)
Happy birthday, Terri!

Terri then perks up with a slight smile on her face.

She puts her backpack down on the floor.

TERRI
Oh yes. I’m sixteen. Just another day.

Katie then turns to Terri with a stern disposition.

Natasha picks up Terri’s backpack.

She hands the backpack to Terri, with great fervor.

The bell rings. The girls then walk to class.

EXT. COFFEE SHOP - AFTERNOON

SUPER: A FEW HOURS LATER

Terri, Katie, and Natasha walk towards the coffee shop.

TERRI
Where are we going?

Natasha turns to Terri.

Katie then opens the door and lets Terri and Natasha go through before she enters the coffee shop.

INT. COFFEE SHOP - AFTERNOON

A small group of students jump up.

ALL
Surprise!!!!!!!!

Terri attempts to hold back tears.

She turns to Katie and Natasha.

TERRI
Did you guys plan this?

After Katie and Natasha nod with a smile, Corey jumps from among the crowd.

COREY
Happy birthday, Terri! I have something for you.

Corey gives Terri a teddy bear.

Terri smiles. Her eyes widen in joy.

She looks at everyone in the crowd.

TERRI
Thank you so much for coming, everyone!

MARY ANNE, 14, passes through among the crowd.

MARY ANNE
Of course, Madame President. We don’t mind celebrating the occasion in the coffee shop.

Sounds of laughter fill the coffee shop.

Once the crowd settles, Terri then gives her speech.

TERRI
This has been a great start to the semester. I’m excited for what is going to happen next.

The crowd cheers and applauds.

Terri then smiles as she looks among the crowd.
