Online Fanbases: A Look Into ABC Scripted Shows

Before I begin, I’ll note that not all TV shows have subreddit pages that I could find. The tables below are sortable, and you can view all columns by swiping on the table with a finger or computer mouse. Let me know what you think in the comments below!

Comedy

For the most part, the number of subreddit followers is correlated with how long the show has been on the air. While Modern Family has come back down to earth lately, the number of followers it has is astonishingly larger than those of the other shows. Meanwhile, Bless This Mess, which so far has only aired six episodes, doesn’t exactly have a passionate online fanbase yet.

There are two other noteworthy things here. One of these is the high placement of Fresh Of The Boat, a show that never really broke out in the Nielsen ratings. Its main “claim to fame” is the fact that it is the first broadcast TV show in decades to have a cast made predominately of Asian-Americans. It is unclear if that is enough for it to accumulate a relatively large online fanbase, but it is certainly interesting how its subreddit followers count is higher than several shows that have seen higher ratings than it has.

The other noteworthy thing is how Schooled is yet to catch on with an online fanbase. It holds well from its parent show, The Goldbergs, in the linear Nielsen ratings, but lags behind a bit when delayed viewing is factored in. We are yet to see how it would fare on its own, but so far signs point to it being a time slot hit.

Drama

Marvel is a wildly popular brand, as demonstrated by the online fanbase for Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD. The ratings started off strong but have since become very low, and now airs Fridays during the summer. This show has significantly more subreddit followers than ABC’s other dramas combined. Grey’s Anatomy also has a large fanbase, and also appears to be doing well with audiences on Netflix and Hulu. How To Get Away with Murder, like Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD, is a show that was once popular in the Nielsen ratings with relatively high subreddit followers to show for it. What is interesting is how Grey’s Anatomy spinoff Station 19 is significantly behind other time slot occupant A Million Little Things, not to mention how far behind it is from Grey's Anatomy itself. Another show that hasn’t really caught on is For the People, which was canceled after two low-rated seasons. As is shown in the table, The Fix almost never existed when it comes to subreddit followers.

INT. APARTMENT LIVING ROOM - DAY
Jack is pacing back and forth near the couch.
Noah is sitting with a laptop computer on his lap. He is typing away.
Jack scratches his head.
JACK
What are we going to do?
Noah pauses, then looks up at Jack. He gives Jack a confused look and then returns to typing.
JACK (CONT’D)
Are you going to say something or not?
Noah grumbles.
NOAH
(groggily)
What do you want from me?
JACK
I don’t know. Maybe some more input on how to go about pitching this pilot.
Noah gasps. He stops typing, puts the computer down on the coffee table, and turns to look at Jack.
NOAH
Did you just say “pitching”? I don’t even know how to throw a baseball.
Jack then sighs.
JACK
Not baseball, you f idiot! A presentation on what the show is all about plus subplots.
NOAH
Oh.
JACK
I can’t believe this.
Jack then paces back and forth. Fury rises from his clenched fists. He breathes quickly.
Meanwhile, Noah picks up the laptop and returns to his typing.
Jack unclenches his fists. He then takes a stack of papers and proceeds to rip into them.
Noah then looks up at Jack.
NOAH
Stop that. What are you doing?
JACK
You think this show is s*, don’t you?
NOAH
That’s not what I’m saying. Look, I’ll show you.
Noah shoves the open laptop onto Jack’s shaking hands.
Jack composes himself as he reads through the screen.
His eyes widen, as if the Surprise Symphony has arrived.
Noah shrugs his shoulders and his eyebrows raise up and down. He then tries to take the laptop.
JACK
That’s the synopsis we’re looking for!
NOAH
(groggily)
What do you mean?
Jack motions Noah closer.
JACK
We got the right amount of crass and the right amount of funny in this synopsis.
Jack then takes a deep breath as he walks over to the couch.
Jack then sits, placing the laptop on the coffee table.
He looks intently at Noah, who paces back and forth.
JACK (CONT’D)
Now if we can just come up with the perfect 25-30 minute script to fit the workings of the synopsis, then we are golden!
Noah then shrugs his head.
His eyes now widen, as if a lightbulb flashed near the vicinity.
NOAH
Wait a minute, isn’t it supposed to be an elevator pitch?
Noah walks towards Jack and sits next to him. then points at the screen of the computer.
Jack’s eyes widen.
NOAH (CONT’D)
This is about three pages. Nobody reads three pages to network executives in one minute. That would take at least three minutes.
Jack turns to Noah.
JACK
Then what would be the main plot for this project?
NOAH
I could look that up for you right now, but we don’t have time. We gotta go to work.
Jack then looks at Noah as if a robbery has occurred.
JACK
Work?
Noah then gets up and walks away.
Jack then shrugs, speechless.

The Enemy Within Canceled by NBC

After one season, NBC has canceled The Enemy Within. The show occupied the Monday at 10 PM slot, where it has averaged a low 0.74. While this is higher than many of NBC's new midseason entries, only trailing realities AGT: The Champions and The Titan Games, that still wasn't enough to get another season. The CIA drama starred Jennifer Carpenter, Morris Chestnut, and Raza Jaffrey. The series finale aired on May 20. This was a correct prediction for The TV Ratings Guide.

The Village Canceled by NBC

NBC's midseason Tuesday drama The Village will not be back next season. The show has drawn little interest, and is currently averaging a 0.66. Throughout its short run, the show has aired in all three primetime hours on Tuesday, most recently at 8 PM. It underperformed in all of those slots despite strong lead-ins from This Is Us and The Voice. The series, set in a Brooklyn apartment building, stars Michaela McManus, Dominic Chianese, Warren Christie, and Lorraine Toussaint. The series finale aired May 21. This was a correct prediction for The TV Ratings Guide.

Abby’s Canceled After One Season

NBC has canceled low-rated sitcom Abby's after one season. The show averages just a 0.42 to-date, and even the NBC tradition of renewing at least one (low-rated) freshman comedy couldn't save it. Neither could the show's EP Mike Schur, one of the network's top names in comedy. Natalie Morales, Neil Flynn, Jessica Chaffin and Nelson Franklin star in the series as the owner of an unlicensed backyard bar and the patrons of the bar, respectively. This was a correct prediction for The TV Ratings Guide.

Network - Episode 2.10 - Critical Mass (Summer Premiere)

Network
2x10 - “Critical Mass”

Written By:
Jessica Boggs

FADE IN:

EXT. MANHATTAN SKYLINE - DAY

An urban area is situated in Staten Island in the middle of New York City.

EXT. NETWORK HEADQUARTERS - DAY

The network’s headquarters sits in the heart of downtown Manhattan.

INT. LEAH’S OFFICE - DAY

Leah sits at her desk.

Her hands are folded together, as if she is in a praying position.

Leah’s office door opens.

Kasey walks into the office and shuts the door.

KASEY
(groggily)
Another day at the office.

Leah looks up at Kasey. She then stands up.

LEAH
Tell me about it.

While clenching her now seven months pregnant baby bump, Kasey walks to a seat.

Leah takes a stack of papers from her desk.

KASEY
This has been incredibly hard.

LEAH
You’re glowing, at least.

Kasey looks down at her belly.

KASEY
(chuckles)
This little guy just had a breakfast of champions.

Leah’s eyes widen.

LEAH
A boy?

Kasey flashes a beaming smile.

KASEY
A boy. Jesse and I kept this under wraps for a while.

Leah then looks down on her desk as she sets the stack of papers on top.

Leah sighs.

KASEY (CONT'D)
We were just waiting for the right moment to tell everybody.

Leah nods.

The phone rings.

Leah picks up the phone.

LEAH
(on phone)
Alright, I’ll tell her.

She fiddles around with the phone cord as she hangs up the phone.

Leah then faces Kasey.

LEAH (CONT'D)
We have to go. Conference call in ten minutes.

Kasey’s eyes widen.

KASEY
What for?

Leah then gets up. She motions Kasey towards the door.

Kasey opens the door.

She exits the office.

Leah grabs her stack of papers and proceeds to walk towards the door.

She leaves the office.

The office door closes.

INT. BUSINESS HALLWAY - DAY

Leah and Kasey walk.

Jesse, in a quick manner, walks with a stack of papers on his left arm.

Charlie follows close behind with a briefcase.

Matt walks with a notepad and pen in hand.

They turn the corner to the conference room.

INT. CONFERENCE ROOM - FIVE MINUTES LATER

Everyone sits on opposite sides of the room: Jesse, Kasey, and Charlie on the left, Ash, Leah, and Matt on the right.

Charlie’s briefcase is on top of the table. It is open.

Charlie unloads her opened briefcase to reveal stacks of reports. She sighs with nervous anticipation.

Kasey takes a deep breath, then turns to look at Jesse.

Ash sets his arms on the conference table. He sighs.

Jesse closes his eyes and shakes his head in a deeply confused state.

Leah crosses her arms and turns towards Jesse’s direction, her eyebrows raised to reveal a stink-eye expression.

Matt sets his pen and notepad on the table.

Ash turns towards Jesse.

ASH
Jesse, do you have an update on pilots yet?

Jesse nods and looks at Ash.

JESSE
I do. It looks like the untitled project of Mike’s is not going forward. Tested well, but it did not meet critical standards.

LEAH
Way to lay out the honesty, Jesse.

Leah chuckles.

LEAH (CONT'D)
For once, you’re making smart decisions.

Jesse frowns.

Ash’s eyebrows lower.

ASH
(sternly)
Enough, Leah.

Ash turns to Jesse as he shuffles a stack of papers in front of him.

ASH (CONT'D)
Jesse, you may continue.

Jesse nods. He composes himself as he shrugs his shoulders.

He takes a deep breath.

JESSE
On the agenda, we are looking forward to the summer panels of The Bullpen, Whoa Folks, I Have Another Dream, and the returning shows.

Charlie fiddles with her hair.

Kasey takes a deep breath as her hands rest on her belly.

Matt furiously writes on his notepad.

Leah composes herself as she intently looks at Jesse.

JESSE (CONT'D)
If we can get the logistics together, that would be swell.

Kasey looks at Ash.

KASEY
What questions should we expect for these panels?

Charlie looks at Kasey intently.

CHARLIE
The critics are going to ask the actors and the producers what the show is about.

Charlie smiles.

CHARLIE (CONT'D)
They also ask about shooting logistics, potential storylines, and the marketing campaigns.

Kasey nods.

The meeting drags on.
