FOX Renew/Cancel Week 17: Can ’Flatch’ Possibly Be Welcomed Back?

Predictions for 4/29/23

Below are the latest renew/cancel predictions for the Fox network in the 2022-23 television season. The numbers listed in the table mark the Nielsen rating low, average, and high for each respective program in the Adults 18-49 demographic. The "Y2Y (year-to-year) Change" column denotes how much the series has risen or fallen when compared to its average from the previous season. Since the last update, '9-1-1: Lone Star', Accused', 'Family Guy', and 'Bob's Burgers' have all declined to new lows.

Welcome To Flatch: Fox's treatment of 'Welcome To Flatch' has truly been a sight to see this year. Though it wrapped up its season over two months ago, the network decided to air reruns of the series on both April 13th (0.12) and April the 20th (0.12). While these encores did not perform much worse than first-run episodes, it is very confusing why the network is deciding to air 'Flatch' repeats in a timeslot that still belongs to 'Call Me Kat'. 'Welcome To Flatch' is a disastrous performer in the Adults 18-49 demographic and was even given a smaller episode order this season when compared to season one's 14-installment package. Providing a sitcom with only 13 episodes during the sophomore year is never a good sign, especially since 'Kat' nabbed a full order of 22. Sitcoms traditionally receive a larger episode count in year two if they are meeting the network's expectations. Being capped at 13 spells doom in most cases. 'The Resident', a series that Fox recently canceled, also had a short, 13-episode order and ended its season around the same time as 'Flatch' did. On the other hand, this show is getting its reruns promoted in commercials and went from being a 9:30 p.m. afterthought to a 9 p.m. centerpiece. 'Flatch' is Likely to be Canceled due to the data provided, but Fox clearly sees something in it that may not be visible to the naked eye. A renewal is not out of the question here, even if it does seem to be on the wrong side of the bubble.

Accused: 'Accused' may have been Renewed for a second season but the anthology drama only continues to sink further into the abyss. The 0.18 rating it posted on April the 25th was 50% below its '9-1-1: Lone Star' lead-in (0.36) and made it the lowest-rated, non-CW show of the night. And even the CW's lineup (0.12/0.11) was not too far behind 'Accused' on that particular evening. 'Accused' is set to return for the 2023-24 television season, but its future beyond that is very uncertain. Going from a 0.45 rating to a 0.18 in a matter of three months is rejection of insane proportions.

Bob's Burgers: While there is no reason to worry about the fate of 'Bob's Burgers', its recent performance in the Adults 18-49 demographic leaves much to be desired. 'Bob's' was granted a special 8 p.m. showing on April 16th and ended up plummeting to a new series low (0.21). While that can be explained away a bit, what cannot be excused is the fact that the series dropped from its 'Great North' lead-in (0.25) by two-hundredths on April 23rd. The 0.23 that 'Bob's' garnered that evening made it the lowest-rated show in the animation lineup. 'Bob's' often outrated 'The Simpsons' in years past, so the fact that it is losing to a weak link like 'The Great North' is beyond appalling. This animated comedy has already been Renewed for two additional seasons, but its value to the network appears to be fading.

ABC Renew/Cancel Week 26: The Rookie: Feds Left Behind as Tuesday Counterparts Granted Renewals

ABC's string of renewals last week leaves many questions in its wake, leaving questions about just how many of their seven remaining shows will get picked up for additional seasons, and how many were left out of last week's fun because no renewal is headed their way at all. Tucker Carlson Departs Fox News, CNN Fires Don Lemon in Major Cable News Shakeups

A major face of cable news is departing, effective immediately. Tucker Carlson, host of Fox News' 8 PM anchor Tucker Carlson Tonight, has departed the right-leaning cable news network after six and a half years of anchoring the series and nearly fourteen years at the company overall. Carlson's program has consistently been the top-rated on all of cable news, with roughly three million viewers tuning in per night as of 2023. The exit comes as a shock, with the host not getting a pre-announced sendoff. His final show was Friday, an uneventful exit for a top name in cable news over the years. In Carlson's slot, the network will air Fox News Tonight, featuring rotating guest hosts until a permanent anchor is named to lead off their primetime lineup. Making the news even more shocking is the fact that Carlson signed a new deal with Fox News just two years ago, which included an increase in Carlson-produced content for Fox News and their streamer, Fox Nation, content that included the daytime program Tucker Carlson Today. Fox News has not announced any reason for the exit, simply saying that they agreed to "part ways," though the network has recently come under scrutiny amid a lawsuit by Dominion Voting Systems, with Carlson being named in the suit.

Carlson is not the only major name on cable news that's on his way out today, as CNN's Don Lemon has also delivered his final broadcast. The controversy-plagued anchor announced his firing today via Twitter, after sixteen news with CNN. Lemon hosted a nightly talk show from ten to midnight for eight years before that show ended in 2022. He moved on to the network's morning program CNN This Morning later that year. Comments made two months ago about ex-South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley that were labeled as misogynistic led to outrage, and a further scandal in which Lemon was accused of having a history of making misogynistic comments to his colleagues. CNN has not named a reason for his firing, though the network has undergone changes as of late due to new management.

The CW Renew/Cancel Part 8: Gotham Knights Not Looking Super as CW Mass Extinction Event Looms

The CW Renew/Cancel returns this week as decisions approach and the threat of a network programming purge looms. The network's midseason superhero dramas take center stage again as I assess their performances a month out from their premieres.

Station 19 Renewed by ABC

ABC's renewals continue to pour in, this time announcing a seventh season pickup of Grey's Anatomy spinoff Station 19. The series currently ranks as the Alphabet Network's #1 drama, with a 0.47 average in the key 18-49 demo. It is also the network's #3 scripted program overall, only behind comedies The Conners and Abbott Elementary. Station 19 debuted in 2018 as the second spinoff of Grey's Anatomy and has become a valuable player for the network after a shaky start, notably strengthening following a move to 8 PM. This season it surpassed its parent series in the 18-49 live+same-day demo, after multiple seasons as ABC's #2 drama. The pickup is the fourth renewal by ABC overall this week and the sixth overall this season. Jaina Lee Ortiz, Jason George, Grey Damon, Barrett Doss, Boris Kodjoe and Stefania Spampinato lead the cast of the series, which will surpass 100 episodes in its just-ordered seventh season. This is a correct prediction for The TV Ratings Guide.

Wednesday Cable Ratings 4/19/23: Snowfall Rises to Season High in Series Finale, The Ark Finale, Single Drunk Female and Digman! Rise

Below are the top 50 programs on cable on Wednesday, 4/19/23. Items of note include the series finale of Snowfall on FX, Single Drunk Female on Freeform, and Dave on FXX.

Wednesday TV Ratings 4/19/23: Abbott Elementary Rises for Finale, Not Dead Yet Jumps, Survivor Hits Season High (UPDATED)

Finals Update: Survivor adjusted up.

The Good Doctor Renewed for Season 7

ABC continues to lock down its drama programming for next season. Following the renewals of The Rookie and Will Trent earlier this week, ABC has announced a renewal of The Good Doctor, their veteran Monday night medical drama. Despite slipping 21% to a 0.32 average this season, the series remains ABC's #1 10 PM series this season, and remains a popular property on streaming and internationally. The Sony/ABC co-produced series surpassed 100 episodes this season and is heading into its seventh season. This season included the backdoor pilot for potential spinoff The Good Lawyer, a project that has yet to be picked up (a decision is expected in early May, when ABC sets its fall lineup). Freddie Highmore, Richard Schiff, Fiona Gubelmann, Christina Chang and Paige Spara are among the principal cast members on the series. This is a correct precaution for The TV Ratings Guide.

Tuesday Cable Ratings 4/18/23: NHL Playoffs Down, NBA Playoffs Lead, Tucker Carlson Tonight Again Leads Cable News

Below are the top 50 programs on cable on Tuesday, 4/18/23. Items of note include NBA Playoffs on TNT, Real Housewives of New Jersey on Bravo, and Tucker Carlson Tonight on Fox News.

Tuesday TV Ratings 4/18/23: American Auto Ends on a Low (but Steady) Note, The Rookie and Weakest Link Drop, 9-1-1: Lone Star Leads (UPDATED)

Finals Update: FBI: International (+0.1) adjusted up.

Will Trent Renewed by ABC

Fresh on the heels of The Rookie being renewed for a sixth season, its fellow Tuesday night drama, Will Trent, has also secured another season. The freshman police procedural debuted in January and rated better than its predecessor in its time slot, The Rookie: Feds. It currently ties Feds as ABC's #1 new drama this season, with a 0.30 average in what has historically been a very difficult time slot for ABC. Ramon Rodriguez, Erika Christensen, JakeMcLaughlin and Sonja Sohn lead the cast of the series. This is a correct prediction for The TV Ratings Guide.

Monday Cable Ratings 4/17/23: Slipping NBA Playoffs Dominate, Spring Baking Championship and Perry Mason Set Season Highs, Tucker Carlson Tonight Leads Cable News

ABC Renew/Cancel Week 25: The Company You Keep Makes for Poor Company

This week on the ABC Renew/Cancel, we take another look at one of ABC's lowest-rated new entries as decision time draws closer. Plus, a renewal for one of the network's strongest shows.

The Rookie Renewed by ABC

The Rookie will be back in action next season. ABC has ordered a sixth season of the Nathan Fillion police procedural, following a season of impressive growth. The show launched a spinoff, The Rookie: Feds, earlier this season, joining together with that show at midseason on Tuesday nights. Its new Tuesday night berth saw a ratings surge, jumping up to a 0.6 in its Tuesday premiere after having dipped below a 0.30 on Sundays in the fall. Though it settled lower than that, it remains a top performer for ABC, with a 24% year-to-year jump to 0.43 average this season that has only grown in the second half of the season. It ranks as ABC's #5 scripted show this season, only behind comedies The Conners and Abbott Elementary and fellow dramas Station 19 and Grey's Anatomy. The pickup is just the third issued by ABC this season, following the aforementioned Abbott Elementary and Grey's Anatomy. This is a correct prediction for The TV Ratings Guide.

WGA Members Vote to Authorize Strike

TV may be headed for another writers strike, over fifteen years after the previous one. Members of the Writers Guild of America have voted overwhelmingly in favor of a strike if a fair deal is not worked out with production studios by May 1st. With nearly 98% of voters in favor of a strike, it is the largest margin in favor of striking in the WGA's history (90% voted to strike in 2007, while 96% voted in favor in 2017, when a strike was averted). A primary goal of the strike to receive higher compensation for writers, with increased contributions to health and pension plans and the regulation of material produced by AI also listed among the guild's goals. If deals are unable to be worked out that all parties are satisfied with, a strike that may greatly impact the 2023-24 TV season may begin. How that will impact the fates of TV's currently-running series remains to be seen.

Sunday TV Ratings 4/16/23: Family Guy Stable in Double Episode, Magnum PI & Bob’s Burgers Hit New Lows, American Idol Rises (UPDATED)

Finals Update: America's Funniest Home Videos (+0.1) adjusted up. The repeat of Next Level Chef (-0.2) adjusted down.
