CBS Renew/Cancel Week 15: CSI: Vegas Gets A Taste of the Sunday Night Death Slot

The Ratings Junkie Sunday, December 31, 2023

Saturday TV Ratings 12/30/23: NFL Dominates An Otherwise-Weak Night, I Am Burt Reynolds Draws Average Audience for The CW (UPDATED w/Analysis)

Ratings Analysis: The Lions v. Cowboys NFL game (2.61) propelled ABC to a Saturday night win and completely crushed the Ohio State v. West Virginia college basketball game (0.12) that Fox offered up. NBC aired reruns of Password (0.12), Dateline (0.12), and SNL Vintage (0.13). CBS was a step below them with repeats of CSI: Vegas (0.09) and 48 Hours (0.08/0.10). I Am: Burt Reynolds (0.05) was fine by CW standards.

Finals Update: NFL: Lions v. Cowboys (+0.7) adjusted up. NFL Kickoff (-0.2) adjusted down.

FOX Renew/Cancel Week 14: The Simpsons Reunites With Football Inflation

Predictions for 12/30/23

Below are the Week 14 renew/cancel predictions for the Fox network in the 2023-24 television season. The numbers listed in the table mark the Nielsen rating low, average, and high for each respective program in the Adults 18-49 demographic. The "Y2Y (year-to-year) Change" column denotes how much the series has risen or fallen when compared to its average from the previous season. Because of the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, there is a limited amount of scripted programming this fall. As a result, reality television will now be included in this column.

The Simpsons: After spending most of the season giving Krapopolis the slot closest to the NFL boost, Fox finally decided to gift The Simpsons with another 8 p.m. showing on a football-inflated night. The lead-in was large enough to propel Simpsons to a monstrous 1.80 rating in the Adults 18-49 demographic. This easily qualifies as a new season high but is also the show's highest rating of the 2020s decade altogether, with the 1.7 it managed for its September 2020 premiere serving as its previous high of the decade. Does this mean that The Simpsons did particularly well? Not quite. Its lead-in was a whopping 4.60, meaning its 39% retention of The OT was not much better than what we have come to expect from Krapopolis (34% retention on 12/17). However, 34% retention in this slot would have amounted to a 1.58 rating, so the 1.8 that we got here is still a clear step above Krap. This rating was high enough that it boosted the average of Simpsons by more than a full tenth, thus taking it out of the tie it was in with Krap and making it the top scripted program on broadcast. This 0.7 average definitely does not represent the true strength of The Simpsons (the four episodes that aired with no NFL help averaged a 0.33), but it just goes to show that the series is an asset in the way that it can retain more of The OT than most.

HouseBroken: The last time that HouseBroken was on the air, it managed an anemic 0.06 rating and went below half a million in total viewership. It would have been reasonable to conclude that the August 6th finale would be its last time on television, but the series somehow wormed its way back onto the schedule on Christmas Eve. Football help catapulted a rerun of HouseBroken to a 0.51 rating and pushed it to nearly 2 million in total viewers. To put things into perspective, the previous high was a 0.28 rating with just under a million viewers. The fact that Fox is randomly airing a rerun of this series on an NFL-inflated evening means that there's a chance they are interested in ordering more episodes of the animated sitcom. It seemed like HouseBroken was a complete goner after its pitiful summer performance, but this broadcast makes it clear that Fox has not forgotten about it. The series has not been officially renewed or canceled, so there is still a possibility that it will return for a third season.

Krapopolis: In an ironic twist of faith, the Christmas Eve repeat of Krapopolis (0.83) posted a rating higher than the December 17th original (0.82) that had direct football help. Fox missed a golden opportunity to place a Krap original here as it truly needs all the help it can get before spring arrives.

Celebrity Name That Tune: And in yet another case of reruns beating originals, the December 26th encore of Celebrity Name That Tune (0.27) posted a higher rating than any episode that aired in fall 2023. As ratings dwindle and the pool of viewers shrinks, this is likely to become a recurring trend. Right now, though, it's still quite rare to see a show go three-hundredths higher than its previous season high for a repeat, at least without football inflation in the picture.

Poll of the Week

Friday TV Ratings 12/29/23: WWE SmackDown Clip Show Leads Weak Night, The Wall, 20/20 and Dateline Encores Tie for Second (UPDATED w/Analysis)

Ratings Analysis: On the last Friday of 2023, nothing was able to even post a 0.3. A WWE Smackdown clip show (0.28) came the closest to clearing the 0.30 threshold and led Fox to a win, though the network's lead was not as pronounced as it usually is on this day of the week. ABC was close behind with a rerun of Shark Tank (0.26) and a 20/20 original (0.25) but ultimately failed to beat Fox. NBC aired repeats of The Wall (0.24) and Dateline (0.23). CBS's Blue Bloods encore (0.24) was on-par with the peacock network's offerings, but they dropped significantly from there with a rerun of TV movie Must Love Christmas (0.15). The CW re-ran Penn & Teller: Fool Us (0.07) and Masters of Illusion: Christmas Magic 2022 (0.06).

Finals Update: The repeat of Shark Tank (+0.1) adjusted up.

Thursday TV Ratings 12/28/23: Celebrity Wheel of Fortune Repeat Leads the Night, Press Your Luck Encore Solid, Ghosts UK Rises (UPDATED w/Analysis)

Ratings Analysis: ABC's repeat of Celebrity Wheel of Fortune (0.34) was the top-rated program on another evening with a limited amount of original programming. From there, encores of Press Your Luck (0.27) and The $100,000 Pyramid (0.20) each shed seven-hundredths from the game show rerun that aired before them. On CBS, Ghosts UK (0.20/0.16) improved on its performance from two weeks ago (0.13) but was still a weaker option than reruns of Young Sheldon (0.23) and American Ghosts (0.20). NBC reruns of Law & Order (0.22) and Dateline (0.19) easily beat out Fox's encore of LEGO Masters: Celebrity Holiday Bricktacular (0.16). NBC also had Transplant (0.19, +0.04), which was up for its first episode in nearly a month. Acquired sitcoms Son of a Critch (0.03, -0.01) and Children Ruin Everything (0.02, -0.01) dipped on the CW.

Finals Update: The 9:30 episode of Ghosts UK (+0.1) adjusted up. Repeats of Celebrity Wheel of Fortune (-0.1) and The $100,000 Pyramid (-0.1) adjusted down.

Wednesday TV Ratings 12/27/23: Kennedy Center Honors Heavily Down, The Year Also Drops, College Football Leads (UPDATED w/Analysis)

Ratings Analysis: The 46th Annual Kennedy Center Honors (0.32) declined by almost 30% from last year's ceremony (0.45) but still beat out E! News Presents NBC's Hot 10 of 2023 (0.24). NBC also had reruns of Magnum P.I. (0.14) and Chicago Med (0.14) that matched The Neighborhood repeat (0.14) that aired on CBS. On ABC, The Year (0.30) was a clear step behind the encore of Celebrity Wheel of Fortune (0.40) that led into it but was only five-hundredths lower than last year (0.35). The Louisville v. USC college football game (0.80) doubled its nearest competitor in the Adults 18-49 demographic and led Fox to a Wednesday win. The CW got a modest result out of WOW - Women of Wrestling (0.04).

Finals Update: College Football: Louisville v. USC (+0.1), The 46th Annual Kennedy Center Honors (+0.1), and the repeat of Celebrity Wheel of Fortune (+0.1) adjusted up.

Tuesday TV Ratings 12/26/23: Celebrity Jeopardy Encores Lead Repeat-Filled Night, Celebrity Name That Tune Hits Season High for Repeat (UPDATED w/Analysis)

Ratings Analysis: On a night with almost nothing but repeats, ABC led the way with strong encores of Celebrity Jeopardy! (0.42/0.38/0.32). Fox had a surprisingly solid Celebrity Name That Tune rerun (0.27) and a much weaker Hell's Kitchen one (0.14). CBS had repeats of NCIS: Sydney (0.27) and Dick Van Dyke: 98 Years of Magic (0.21). NBC re-ran Night Court (0.22), Extended Family (0.19), Weakest Link (0.20), and Found (0.13). The CW had the only original of the evening in the form of Inside the NFL (0.09, +0.04), and it clearly took advantage of the lack of competition.

Finals Update: The 9 PM repeat of Celebrity Jeopardy! (+0.1), Celebrity Name That Tune (+0.1), and NCIS: Sydney (+0.1) adjusted up.

Monday TV Ratings 12/25/23: The Grinch Respectable on Christmas, NFL Out-Rates Christmas 2022 Primetime Game (UPDATED w/Analysis)

Ratings Analysis: ABC got a massive 7.65 rating out of their Ravens v. 49ers NFL game on Christmas evening and easily topped the night. On Fox, a repeat showing of MasterChef Junior: Home for the Holidays (0.60) likely had some sort of NFL help baked into it and was the highest-rated offering outside of the alphabet network. CBS aired reruns of The Price Is Right At Night (0.41) and Mariah Carey: Merry Christmas to All! (0.25). NBC went with the animated edition of How the Grinch Stole Christmas! from 1966 (0.32), and the live-action adaptation from 2000 (0.38). The CW re-ran The Waltons' Homecoming (0.05).

Finals Update: NFL: Ravens v. 49ers (+3.0), Dr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas (+0.1), and the repeat of The Price Is Right At Night (+0.1) adjusted up. Monday Night Kickoff (-3.3) and the repeat of MasterChef Junior: Home for the Holidays (-0.1) adjusted down.

All I Want for Christmas

Sunday TV Ratings 12/24/23: It’s a Wonderful Life Rises from 2022 but Home Alone Still Triumphs on Christmas Eve, Lingo and Loteria Loca Holiday Specials Leave Coal in CBS’s Stocking (UPDATED w/Analysis)

Ratings Analysis: Two classic Christmas movies faced off on Christmas Eve, but one had a clear advantage, that being 1990 film Home Alone (0.65). ABC's broadcast of the Macaulay Culkin staple beat out NBC's telecast of It's A Wonderful Life (0.42) head-on, even though the latter was actually up from 2022Life had rotten lead-in help from reruns of 5 More Sleeps 'Til Christmas (0.08) and Night Court (0.12), while ABC began the night with an AFV encore (0.25) and followed Home Alone with a Celebrity Family Feud one (0.40). On CBS, 60 Minutes (0.30, -0.10) slipped to yet another season low after setting one last week. It was followed by holiday-themed editions of Lingo (0.20) and Loteria Loca (0.12) that underwhelmed in the Nielsen department. Fox had more NFL help than usual and used the extra assistance to boost The Simpsons (1.80, +1.27) to its highest rating of the season. Reruns of Krapopolis (0.83), HouseBroken (0.51), and Family Guy (0.43) clearly benefited as well. The Chosen (0.07, +0.04) climbed higher for its CW finale.

Finals Update: It's A Wonderful Life (+0.1), NFL Overrun (+2.1), The OT (+1.4), The Simpsons (+0.3), 60 Minutes (+0.1), and the repeat of Krapopolis (+0.1) adjusted up. The repeat of Celebrity Family Feud (-0.1) adjusted down.

CBS Renew/Cancel Week 14: The Ghosts of Christmas Past and Present are Not the Ghosts of CBS’s Future

The Ratings Junkie Sunday, December 24, 2023

Saturday TV Ratings 12/23/23: Extended Family Has Pitiful Post-NFL Showing, Night Court Rates Below Season One Average, SNL Christmas Grows in Second Airing (UPDATED w/Analysis)

Ratings Analysis: NBC used their NFL lead-in to boost the series premiere of new sitcom Extended Family (0.71), but the results were less than satisfactory. If Family were to carry over even half of this rating for its Tuesday time slot debut, it'd be in a great position to succeed, but it is hard to imagine that that will happen. At 8:30, Night Court (0.46) took away enough football help to beat most of its spring 2023 showings but still lost out to the Saturday Night Live Christmas Special (0.56) that came right after. On the sports front, ABC's Utah vs. Northwestern college football game (0.59) was well above Fox's St. John's v. CT college basketball game (0.19). CBS re-ran When Christmas Was Young (0.12) and 48 Hours (0.15). The CW aired Christmas With The Chosen: Holy Night (0.05).

Finals Update: College Football: UT v. Northwestern (+0.2) adjusted up. Extended Family (-0.2) and Night Court (-0.1) adjusted down.

FOX Renew/Cancel Week 13: Will Family Guy Survive The Move To Wednesday?

December 23rd Predictions

Below are the Week 13 renew/cancel predictions for the Fox network in the 2023-24 television season.

Family Guy: On December 17th, Family Guy aired what might have been its last original on a Sunday night. The long-running sitcom finished the fall season on a high note by growing to a 0.43 rating with the help of an indirect football boost. Though reruns of the Seth MacFarlane cartoon will still air on this evening in the coming weeks, Wednesday night will serve as its new home for the foreseeable future. Given that Family Guy is not returning until March 6th and will have a middling performer like Animal Control for a lead-in, the Fox animation staple is in for a tough time. Family Guy will be lucky to stay above its 0.23 series low in the spring, and it's hard to blame it when Fox abruptly decided to change what night it airs on.

Krapopolis: Another week, another undeserved football boost. Krapopolis got its fourth chance to air in the 8 p.m. time slot on a night with direct NFL assistance, but it only managed a 0.82 rating this time around. This serves as the comedy's weakest 8 p.m. showing yet and will probably be the last time it gets this type of support during the 2023-24 television season. All the football juice pumped into it has helped the series soar all the way to a 0.61 average in the Adults 18-49 demographic, putting it in a virtual tie with The Simpsons. That number is sure to drop significantly when the spring episodes come into the picture, but Fox has genuinely done all it can to help this series out. Fans of the show have no reason to blame the network when Krapopolis inevitably sinks in the spring months.

The Masked Singer: The Masked Singer ended the fall season with a surge. The reality program climbed to a 0.51 rating for its December finale and was only 0.03 away from the season high it set on premiere night. This is quite an encouraging sign as The Masked Singer has otherwise been below the 0.40 mark for the two episodes that came before this one. If it can somehow stay at this level during the spring, it will be able to provide Animal Control and Family Guy with a sizable boost. What's more likely to happen, however, is that The Masked Singer will hover around a 0.4 rating, and Animal Control will find itself in the 0.20-0.22 range. Family Guy will probably do its best to build from there, but it's unlikely that it will go higher than a 0.3 during this stint. The spring 2024 lineup will probably mirror the Hell's Kitchen/Welcome to Flatch/Call Me Kat lineup of fall 2022 as the 9:30 show (Family Guy in this case) will slightly grow from the 9 p.m. series (Animal Control), all while the 9 p.m. sitcom sheds too much of the 8 p.m. reality program's rating (The Masked Singer in this case).

The Bullpen 2023 Christmas Special: Warming Up on Christmas

Do Not Resuscitate: The Vampire Diaries

Welcome to another installment of Do Not Resuscitate. Since I've been absent much of 2023, I have not written another article until Christmas break. Today, I will talk about The Vampire Diaries, which was produced by Kevin Williamson and Julie Plec and was picked up in the middle of Twilight Mania and saw a spinoff in its heyday. Set in the fictional town of Mystic Falls, Virginia, it follows the life of Elena Gilbert as she falls in love with Stefan Salvatore and then his brother Damon.

The Original Hit Machine - The Vampire Diaries (2009-2017)

The Vampire Diaries premiered on September 10, 2009, with its pilot episode attracting the largest audience of any series premiere on the CW with 4.9 million viewers and a 2.0 in the key A18-49 demographic before being surpassed by Arrow. The first season averaged 3.6 million viewers. It was a staple on Thursday nights, never getting below a 1.0 until Halloween 2013 when it dropped to a 0.9 in the demo.

Since then, The Vampire Diaries hit a sub-1.0 regularly as the show progressed. After season six, Nina Dobrev departed the cast, and this show took an even bigger hit at the beginning of season seven.  Eventually, the show moved to Fridays, where it hit a series low of 0.3 in the key demo.

Reasons Why This Show Needs to Stay Canceled

  • The Vampire Diaries came at a heyday for Twilight mania when it peaked. Now that Twilight is no longer popular, do we need this show back for a reboot?
  • Julie Plec mentioned that the logistics caused the show to end the way it did.
  • The cast has moved on from the show itself.

Anyways, all eight seasons of The CW’s The Vampire Diaries are available to stream on Max in the United States.

Friday TV Ratings 12/22/23: A Home for the Holidays Weak, Santa Claus is Comin to Town Encore Solid, WWE SmackDown Steady (UPDATED w/Analysis)

Ratings Analysis: A Home for the Holidays (0.18) did not impress on CBS and settled for a fourth-place finish in the 8 p.m. time slot. Fit for Christmas (0.16) went even lower in the 9 p.m. hour. ABC had a strong showing of Santa Claus is Comin' to Town (0.35) and a solid 20/20 repeat (0.28). On Fox, WWE Smackdown (0.55, 0.00) matched last week's installment. NBC re-ran Dolly Parton's Christmas of Many Colors (0.24) and Dateline (0.19). The CW aired Penn & Teller: Fool Us (0.06) and Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer (0.08).

Finals Update: Repeats of 20/20 (+0.1) and Fit for Christmas (+0.1) adjusted up.

Thursday TV Ratings 12/21/23: Dick Van Dyke Special and iHeartRadio Jingle Ball Mediocre, Big Brother Reindeer Games Rises for Finale (UPDATED w/Analysis)

Ratings Analysis: Big Brother Reindeer Games (0.32, +0.02) inched up for its CBS finale and was able to top a quiet Thursday night. In the 9 p.m. time slot, Dick Van Dyke: 98 Years of Magic (0.24) was rather modest but still outpaced NBC's rerun of Dolly Parton's Mountain Magic Christmas (0.20). The peacock network also re-ran Christmas At Graceland (0.23). The iHeartRadio Jingle Ball (0.29) was only passable by ABC standards but easily trumped Fox TV movie The Christmas Break (0.16). On the CW, Son of a Critch (0.04, +0.01) gained a hundredth, while Children Ruin Everything (0.03, 0.00) held steady.

Finals Update: All shows held their preliminary rounded ratings.

Wednesday TV Ratings 12/20/23: Survivor Steady for Finale, The Masked Singer Ends Higher, Olaf’s Frozen Adventure Rates as Top Christmas Special of the Night (UPDATED w/Analysis)

Ratings Analysis: CBS's Survivor (0.84, 0.00) ended a wildly successful season by tying its week-ago installment and topping the night with ease. On Fox, The Masked Singer (0.51, +0.12) had a pretty solid comeback for its own finale but (understandably) paled in comparison to Survivor. Animated holiday specials Olaf's Frozen Adventure (0.25) and Mickey Saves Christmas (0.20) were modest at best on ABC. Olaf was up from the last time it aired (0.19), but Mickey was a hundredth lower than its 12/10 broadcast (0.21). Later in the night, ABC dropped the animation but kept the Christmas theme with reruns of The Great Christmas Light Fight (0.21) and CMA Country Christmas (0.15). NBC re-ran A Very Barry Christmas (0.22) and Christmas at the Opry (0.20). The CW had an encore of Christmas Around the USA (0.04).

Finals Update: Survivor (+0.1) adjusted up.

Tuesday TV Ratings 12/19/23: The Voice Rises for Finale, Prep & Landing Down from 2022, The Great Christmas Light Fight Slips for Finale (UPDATED with Analysis)

Ratings Analysis: NBC's The Voice (0.53, +0.07) climbed higher on finale night and was the top program of the evening in both the Adults 18-49 demographic and total viewership. On ABC, animated Christmas specials Prep & Landing (0.30) and Prep & Landing: Naughty vs. Nice (0.28) were each down by four-hundredths from their 2022 telecasts (0.34/0.32). The Great Christmas Light Fight (0.22, -0.01) followed the cartoons and shed a hundredth for its finale. CBS was up across the board with The Price Is Right At Night (0.39, +0.06) and Big Brother Reindeer Games (0.30, +0.02). LEGO Masters: Celebrity Holiday Bricktacular (0.19, +0.01) picked up a precious hundredth on Fox, while Inside the NFL (0.05, -0.01) and Whose Line (0.05, -0.01) both lost one on the CW.

Monday TV Ratings 12/18/23: Password Hits New Low for Holiday Special, The Voice and Big Brother Reindeer Games Drop (UPDATED w/Analysis)

Ratings Analysis: A holiday-themed edition of Password (0.26) underwhelmed on NBC and went below all previous showings of the game show revival in the Adults 18-49 demographic. At 8, The Voice (0.46, -0.04) was down a bit from last Monday's episode. Sunday TV Ratings 12/17/23: Willie Nelson 90th Birthday Special Low, The Sound of Music Down from 2022, Krapopolis Sinks (UPDATED w/Analysis)

Ratings Analysis: Willie Nelson's 90th Birthday Celebration (0.27) was quite abysmal on CBS but some of the blame could be put on its lead-in as 60 Minutes (0.40, -0.85) plummeted to a new season low in the 7 p.m. time slot. On ABC, the annual broadcast of The Sound of Music (0.32) was a touch lower than last year's (0.36) but served as an improvement over the week-ago Frozen (0.24). NBC's Ravens v. Jaguars NFL game managed a 4.25 rating but was down by almost two points from the week-ago SNF broadcast (6.13). Fox had another NFL-boosted night, so they placed Krapopolis (0.82, -0.38) in the 8 p.m. slot once more. The results were not ideal, however, as Krap could not even break a 1 this time around. The Simpsons (0.53, -0.06) had a much smaller drop in comparison, while Bob's Burgers (0.46, +0.06) and Family Guy (0.43, +0.06) were actually on the rise. The Chosen (0.03, -0.01) lost a hundredth on the CW.

Finals Update: NFL Overrun (+3.1), The OT (+0.8), Krapopolis (+0.1), The Simpsons (+0.1), Bob's Burgers (+0.1), Willie Nelson's 90th Birthday Celebration (+0.1), and NFL: Ravens v. Jaguars (+0.8) adjusted up. Football Night in America (-0.3) adjusted down.

Boise St. college football game (0.38) was the top broadcast in prime time, with Fox's AL v. Creighton college basketball game (0.13) coming nowhere near the alphabet network. NBC had a repeat of That Clip Show: Holiday Edition (0.13), Dateline (0.18), and SNL Vintage (0.19). The CW's broadcast of Shrek 2 (0.09) matched last week's showing of the original Shrek

Fox Renew/Cancel Week 12: Snake Oil Is No King Cobra, But That’s Okay

December 16th Predictions

Below are the Week 12 renew/cancel predictions for the Fox network in the 2023-24 television season.

Snake Oil: The first season of Snake Oil ended with a small dip on Wednesday, December 13th. The David Spade game show shed two-hundredths and posted a passable 0.24 rating in the Adults 18-49 demographic. Snake Oil can be best be described as a marginal performer as it did just enough to get by but never appeared to be anything more than a modest retainer of The Masked Singer's audience. It was quite concerning when the series crashed to a 0.19 in late November, but it has otherwise been relatively stable in the 0.24-0.26 range for some time now. It's definitely not a breakout hit, but Snake Oil can still survive on Fox with these numbers.

LEGO Masters: LEGO Masters also aired its season finale this week but dropped to a new series low in the process. Masters finished its fall run with a meager 0.20 rating and was nearly 50% lower than the episode of Hell's Kitchen (0.39) that aired right before it. The fact that LEGO Masters has already been picked up for a fifth season proves that live ratings do not matter in the same way that they used to. Fox is clearly content with this lackluster performance given that the series had already scored a season five renewal before season four even aired.

Hell's Kitchen: Hell's Kitchen posted a new season high on December 14th, growing to a 0.39 rating after being stuck at a 0.38 for two weeks. This ultimately made Hell's the highest-rated show of the night altogether, a rarity for Fox on nights without WWE Smackdown or an NFL boost. It's easy to forget that this is the same show that premiered with a paltry 0.29 in September. Now, it is practically on-par with a juggernaut like The Masked Singer. Most shows that debuted with a rounded 0.3 three months ago would probably be at a 0.2 or below by December, but Hell's only seems to have grown stronger and is almost about to break the 0.40 threshold. Fox could do without a good chunk of their reality library, but Hell's Kitchen is one program they desperately need.

The Masked Singer: Though it did rise to a 0.39 this week, The Masked Singer is clearly declining in strength. There is no longer any meaningful difference between Singer and Hell's in terms of ratings size, even though Hell's likely costs the network much less. One would think that this series would have to stabilize at some point, but it continues to fall lower and lower.
