Modern Family S7E2 Review

Modern Family S7E2 Review

Spoilers Guide
Last week, I mentioned that Modern Family is growing old, and it is showing it. The humor does not feel fresh anymore, unlike back in the first three seasons. I hoped that this second episode of the new season would be better than the first, was it? Read on to find out what I thought of it.

S7E2 "The Day Alex Left for College"

In this episode, Alex told her parents the wrong day that she was going off to college so they wouldn't make a big deal out of it. That was pretty funny as it showed the contrast between Phil and Claire's more emotional characters and Alex who is not emotional. Joe got to be funny in a scene where Jay and Gloria don't want to go to Lily's soccer game, and things are not going well for Mitch and Cam as Mitch handles wills and estates, and Cam is focused on renting out the upstairs unit.

Alex arrives at college, and her roommate is exactly the type of person she didn't expect, which Haley finds hilarious. Then, there is a hilarious scene where the rest of the family doesn't show up for Lily's soccer game, and Mitch and Cam borrow everyone's phone to call all of their phones, and Claire and Gloria come up with excuses why they couldn't show up.

Also in this episode, Phil and Luke are showing a very strange house. That storyline really was not interesting and it wasn't funny. The rest of the family shows up at Lily's game, and Mitch sees that Jay has been shot in the foot, but Joe reveals that it was Gloria that shot him. The end of the episode  had some good moments, such as when Mitch called halftime "intermission", but overall it really wasn't as strong as the first two thirds of the episode.

Overall, this was a pretty good episode. It had some weaker spots, but there were also some really good jokes.

The Middle S7E2 Review

Just six years ago, The Middle started, and Sue was hilarious as a seventh grader who tries out for everything but doesn't make anything. Now, she's just as hilarious as she goes off to college, and in its seventh season The Middle is just as fresh as it was earlier on.

S7E2 "Cutting the Cord"

This episode embraced Frankie and Mike's laziness as they really don't want to take care of Brick after Sue is dropped off at college. Meanwhile, Sue is wondering when her roommate will show up, as it has been three days and she hasn't yet. This was very funny because she kept texting Frankie about it, and everything else. Brick meanwhile at school dresses up as a bookmark to be a mascot for the pep rally, which was hilarious.

Axl, also, has ants in his house, and he and Hutch try to get rid of them, first by trying to attract them all to a bowl of syrup, then by looking on Craigslist for an anteater. Sue of course keeps contacting Frankie, and one of the calls was hilarious where Sue said that she learns that not everyone loves America and not all policemen are nice. Oh, Sue, you are so naïve. Sue's roommate finally shows up, and she is a junior who is like the complete opposite of Sue. Frankie and Mike decide to stop helping out Sue because she always wants one more of everything, but they can't think of a nice way to say that to her, so Mike just sends her a frog emoji. Great parenting, huh? Frankie and Mike are very funny in this episode.

Brick now has a sort-of bodyguard, and he doesn't understand why. But, it turns out that the kid is just being nice, so he teaches the kid how to do his dance for "Everybody Read Now". Meanwhile, Sue and her roommate aren't exactly getting along, and Sue goes to sleep on the couch in the lounge, but she gets written up for that. She calls Frankie and Mike in tears, and they decide that she really does need help. Axl ends up being the one to help Sue out though, he takes her to get pizza. It was a really sweet moment that I really enjoyed.

This was a great episode of The Middle, I really enjoyed it. Sue going off to college is providing the show with some great humor, and I think this will be a really good season.

Top Posts of the Month + Comment and Question of the Week

The Ratings Junkie Wednesday, September 30, 2015
You may have realized a lack of Top Posts publishings on Saturday; I decided to hold off until today, where I can officially list not only the top pages of the week, but also the month and give a little insight on our traffic. As always, clicking on the title of the post will redirect you there.

Top Posts of the Week

One thing seems clear: Renew/Cancel Watches remain very strong on this site. Also notable is that the Quantico ratings prediction article was posted on June 28. My prediction (1.1) was way off, but the vast majority said either 1.5-1.7 or greater than 1.7, so good job! Looks like we had some people curious about how it would do.

Final Comments on Site Traffic

We have more than doubled our traffic in September from August, and traffic is up 7 times from the month of June. I don't even know how much traffic is up from back when I was running the site by myself on Wordpress, but let's just say it's astronomical. Please everyone, continue to visit, comment if you would like, and tell your friends about the site. Word of mouth is our best means of growing even more, and don't hesitate to comment on suggestions for the future and how we can improve. Thanks!

FOX Renew/Cancel Watch: Gotham Is Certain to be Renewed

FOX Renew/Cancel Watch: Gotham Is Certain to be Renewed

Hey guys, I'm Alan, and this is the first official FOX Renew/Cancel predictions of the season. They will be posted weekly on Wednesday mornings, usually after the prelims come out. Below are my predictions and explanations for FOX scripted shows that have premiered so far.

FOX Scripted Average So Far: 1.84
FOX Scripted Average So Far Excluding Empire: 1.49
FOX Scripted Average This Week (From Last Wednesday To This Tuesday) Without Empire: 1.50

Certain Renewal

  • Empire (6.7)
  • Family Guy (1.5)
  • The Simpsons (1.5) (Renewed)
  • Gotham (1.6)

Likely Renewal

  • Brooklyn Nine-Nine (1.5)
  • The Last Man on Earth (1.4)
  • Scream Queens (1.6)
  • Grandfathered (1.5)

Bubble
  • Bob's Burgers (1.2)
  • The Grinder (1.5)
Likely Cancellation

  • Rosewood (2.4)

Certain Cancellation

  • Minority Report (1.0)

Premiere week was a mixed bag for FOX. All of its shows except Empire were down y2y, and a lot of them had very ugly percentage drops. The good new is OMG Empire and the surprisingly high debut of Rosewood. The bar of renewal is also set much lower if all FOX shows drop.

Minority Report was DOA with a 1.1, and the 0.9 this week did not help. FOX can't be happy with this kind of performance, and it's doing worse than what Sleepy Hollow probably would have done in the first two weeks at least. It will probably be replaced by some other genre show like Lucifer or Lookinglass. Gotham's 1.6 premiere was underwhelming, but it had a good hold in week 2. It should be fine by being the #3 (likely #2 in the future) FOX show.

Scream Queen's debut numbers was surprisingly disappointing for all the promotion and hype it got. But, its A18-49 ratings are above average (for now), and its A18-34 is very high which could keep it profitable as FOX knows how to sell A18-34 and W18-34 to advertisers.

The Sunday block was way down y2y, but that was on a football night with the Simpsons/Family Guy crossover. That was bound to happen especially because of the big spring drops, but football is coming next week to boost the numbers a little. I upgraded Bob's Burgers from my preseason predictions because it's probably the stablest FOX show and a good utility player.

The Tuesday comedies premiered on par with the Sunday block, but we'll have to see how they hold up in the long run because they are likely to drop more as new shows.

And Rosewood premiered way above average and expectations. But, I'm not quite convinced that it is the real deal. Audience reception has been terrible from my POV, and it's a likely candidate for a large premiere drop. Empire may have got it good sampling, but I don't think it will be able to prop it up enough for a renewal.

Scream Queens S1E3 Review

Scream Queens S1E3 Review

Spoilers Guide
I'm back! Last week, I really enjoyed the first two episodes of Scream Queens, finding it very funny as well as thrilling. Thirteen more episodes now remain in the season (including this one) as we wait to find out who the Red Devil is. Theories as to who it is are very welcome in the comments, and I may include them in the following week's post. But, before that, I have an episode to review!

And, of course, spoilers ahead.

S1E3 "Chainsaw"

In this episode, Chanel #5 discovers that #2's body has gone missing, just like the maid's earlier. When Grace and Zayday go into #2's room, they discover that she isn't there and there is a stain on the ground. Denise tries to put some sense into their heads, but they don't listen, if only people listened to Denise. Cathy gives a speech, and in it she mentions that Boone's death was ruled a suicide. Also, the university gets a new mascot, an ice cream cone. Grace, Zayday, and Denise went to Bel-Air, where they discover that #2 is not there, you know, because she is dead.

Next, Grace's dad begins teaching her film analysis class, which she is mad about. He shows a film about the Texas chainsaw massacre, and Gigi comes into his class and after class they flirt. Then, we meet the guy in the ice cream cone. It was a hilarious scene, but then he is murdered by the Red Devil with a chainsaw. Chanel then decides to give "Neckbrace" a makeover to look nice and to have there be one less loser in Kappa, hoping to get Chad back.

Cathy has an idea for her and Gigi to move into Kappa for a week. Then, #5 talks to the lesbian pledge, and reveals that her father was Charles Manson. She wants them to be alibi buddies, in case one of them is accused in the next murder. Then, Chanel reveals that "Neckbrace" is now Chanel #6. The other two Chanels are outraged, and I smell a murder coming.

Chad tells his group that he believes that Boone was murdered. Grace then goes back to her love interest, and shares her new theory that Chad is the Red Devil because she believes that he was the baby from 20 years ago. Then, Chad and his squad walk down the street calling out the Red Devil, and two of them show up with chainsaws and kill two of the squad.

Denise considers Zayday a "person of extreme murderous interest" and arrests her. While this at first seems crazy, she makes a good point, as she believes that Zayday is working with someone else, based on a tweet at Shonda Rhimes and a chainsaw found underneath her bed. Cathy and Gigi are going to go to bed, and Cathy needs a white noise machine to sleep. The noises though are loud and annoying, so Gigi decides to sleep on the couch. The Red Devil then shows up, again with a chainsaw. I'm really wondering why in this episode he or she uses a chainsaw, while in the past, the Red Devil didn't. Gigi and Grace's dad fight the Red Devil, and knock him or her over the couch. When they look again behind the couch, though, only the chainsaw is there. They then accuse Cathy of being the killer.

While I question the whole chainsaw thing, the episode was still very exciting and funny. It was a really good episode.

Fresh Off the Boat S2E2 Review

Fresh Off the Boat S2E2 Review

TV Guide
In my opinion, Fresh Off the Boat is currently the funniest show on television. Every episode has been at least good so far, and this one is not an exception.

S2E2 "Boy II Man"

The episode started with classic Fresh Off the Boat humor. Jessica decided on an elective for Eddie, and her reasoning was "because I said so", which the entire family chimed in on saying. Also, there was a hilarious moment where Evan was power walking to school with the neighborhood ladies. At school, Nicole needed a tutor, and convinced Eddie to be her tutor, so they can just listen to music and Eddie doesn't have to take pickelo, but Jessica doesn't want Eddie to tutor. Also, Jessica helps Honey say no, and Louis wants a daughter.

Louis talks to Jessica about having a daughter but she says no, though Emory overhears, and he and Evan talk about if they had a sister, and they made a hilarious joke about Eddie not going to college. This kids are really funny. Meanwhile, Jessica tells Eddie that he cannot tutor, but he says no, which makes Jessica angry. Remember, this is Jessica though, she is far from finished. She convinces the principal to give Eddie other students to tutor, and then he hates tutoring. Jessica has won.

Louis leaves calendars of baby girls dressed as vegetables all over the house, and when he tells Jessica how cute it is, she goes on about how it looks like the baby was cursed, and it was a very hilarious rant. Eddie is depressed that he can't have one-on-one time with Nicole, and he just listens to Boyz II Men in his room. At dinner, he starts singing, and the other men of the family join in. Jessica doesn't know what to do, and Honey convinces her that she needs to be a friend to Eddie. It was a very fitting ending to the episode.

I think that this may be the best episode of Fresh Off the Boat yet. It was very funny, like usual, and it also had a good more serious moment near the end with Jessica and Eddie. This was definitely a great episode.

The Weekly #1: PREMIERE WEEK

The TV Ratings Guide Weekly! A weekly feature including the ratings of all the programs aired by
broadcast networks NBC, FOX, ABC, CBS, and The CW. In addition, the top ten of cable and weekly rankings of six broadcast networks. All ratings are the Live+SD Adults 18-49 and Total Viewer numbers provided by Nielsen.

For the regular season, the posts will be labeled with the week number with premiere week being week # 1.

With all the shows coming back, I thought it would be a good idea to compare how the shows are doing compared to last season. Many of the circumstances are vastly different which causes the craz y2y trends.

* Non-fall premiere, compared with season 1.
** Compared with timeslot debut.
