This week on the NBC Renew/Cancel, I take another look at the network's disastrous Tuesday lineup, with a different part of the lineup looking seemingly eliminating itself from renewal contention. The NBA can't come soon enough!

Ratings Analysis: CBS dramas FBI (0.41, +0.03), FBI: International (0.31, +0.03), and FBI: Most Wanted (0.32, +0.01) were all up in their winter returns, with FBI topping the night in the key demo. But that turned out to be bad news for ABC, as Will Trent (0.30, -0.12), High Potential (0.35, -0.12), and The Rookie (0.23, -0.08) all came crashing down from the high level they were at. On NBC, St. Denis Medical (0.27, 0.00) held even yet again, but Night Court (0.15, -0.05) plummeted to a new series low. Deal or No Deal Island (0.17, -0.03) also slipped, but The Irrational (0.12, +0.02) managed to buck the trend. Kitchen Nightmares (0.28, -0.03) and Doc (0.21, -0.02) dipped on Fox, as did the CW's WWE NXT (0.19, -0.03).

Sunday TV Ratings 1/26/25: Watson Preview Underperforms Previous Week’s Hollywood Squares Airing, AFC Championship Game Sets All-Time Viewership Record, Mayfair Witches Drops [+ Analysis]

On ABC, The Proposal (0.14) fell below the week-ago airing of Beauty and the Beast (0.22). NBC aired reruns of Deal or No Deal Island (0.07/0.06) and Dateline (0.13). The CW aired Two Weeks Notice (0.05). Key: (P) = premiere. (R) = repeat.

Ratings Analysis: Law & Order (0.29, -0.05), SVU (0.40, -0.09), and Found (0.24, -0.05) were all knocked down a peg on NBC. Extreme Makeover: Home Edition (0.22, -0.04) also slipped on ABC, while CBS's Hollywood Squares (0.34, -1.40) was way down from Sunday's NFL-boosted installment. NBC Renew/Cancel Week 13: A Renewal for The Irrational is Impossible to Rationalize

This week on the NBC Renew/Cancel, I take a look at two of NBC's lowest-rated series and assess whether either have any shot of returning next season. Plus, an early look at the network's newest drama before its official debut early next month!

Tuesday TV Ratings 1/21/25: Night Court and Doc Slip, Kitchen Nightmares Rises, The Irrational Collapses to Embarrassing New Low [+ Analysis]

Ratings Analysis: St. Denis Medical (0.27, 0.00) matched last week's rating on NBC, but Night Court (0.20, -0.04) slipped at 8:30. Deal or No Deal Island (0.20, -0.04) had a similar drop in the 9 p.m. hour, while The Irrational (0.10, -0.06) collapsed to a disastrous new low at 10. On ABC, Will Trent (0.42, -0.05), High Potential (0.47, -0.02), and The Rookie (0.31, -0.02) all declined. Kitchen Nightmares (0.31, +0.02) inched up on Fox, but Doc (0.23, -0.02) went in the other direction. WWE NXT (0.22, +0.05) surged on the CW. CBS aired drama encores (0.32/0.27/0.22). Key: (R) = repeat.

Monday TV Ratings 1/20/25: The Traitors Broadcast Preview Pitiful, College Football Championship Down 15% from 2024, 9-1-1: Lone Star Returns to Series Low [+ Analysis]

Ratings Analysis: The broadcast premiere of The Traitors (0.14/0.11) bombed on NBC, with the Peacock series placing fourth in the 8 p.m. time slot. CBS aired reruns of NCIS (0.19) and NCIS: Origins (0.12). In the 10 p.m. hour, their coverage of President Trump's inauguration (0.10) trailed that of ABC's (0.14). 9-1-1: Lone Star (0.21, -0.01) dipped to a new series low on Fox but somehow topped broadcast. Rescue: HI-Surf (0.18, 0.00) held steady. The CW re-aired I Am MLK Jr. (0.07). Key: (R) = repeat.

Sunday TV Ratings 1/19/25: The Hunting Party Preview Dismal, Hollywood Squares Solid, When Calls the Heart Declines [+ Analysis]

Ratings Analysis: Despite having an NFL lead-in, the series premiere of The Hunting Party (0.46) did not seem to benefit on NBC. A rerun of Deal or No Deal Island (0.23) and Dateline (0.22) followed. CBS used their football game to boost Hollywood Squares (1.74, +1.38) and got a much better result. On ABC, the network's broadcast of the 2017 film Beauty and the Beast (0.22) improved on the week-ago Marley & Me. Fox went with repeats of Kitchen Nightmares (0.07), The Simpsons (0.11), Universal Basic Guys (0.07), Animal Control (0.07), and Going Dutch (0.10). Bring It On (0.05) aired on the CW. Key: (R) = repeat.

Saturday TV Ratings 1/18/25: Commanders/Lions NFL Playoff Game Massive, Saturday Night Live Rises, My Argentine Heart Modest on Hallmark [+ Analysis]

Ratings Analysis: Fox got a monstrous 8.67 rating out of their Commanders v. Lions NFL broadcast, which was enough to beat the combined Adults 18-49 rating of all other Saturday night competitors. On ABC, reruns of Shifting Gears (0.58/0.30) had some football inflation baked in, but the boost was largely gone by the time repeats of High Potential (0.17/0.14) aired. Over on NBC, Saturday Night Live (0.76, +0.06) climbed higher in its 2025 return with host Dave Chappelle. 48 Hours (0.12, -0.14) collapsed on CBS. A rerun of I Am JFK Jr. (0.04) was viewed by few on the CW. Key: (R) = repeat.

Friday TV Ratings 1/17/25: Unrivaled Basketball Off to Solid Start, RuPaul’s Drag Race Jumps, Happy’s Place and Shark Tank Slide [+ Analysis]

Ratings Analysis: ABC's Shark Tank (0.25, -0.04) slipped in its return, but 20/20 (0.21) was even with last week's special edition. On NBC, Happy's Place (0.22, -0.08) and Lopez vs Lopez (0.17, -0.07) plummeted, while Dateline (0.22) built on Lopez. CBS aired drama repeats (0.16/0.13/0.14). On Fox, college basketball (0.21) was passable by Friday standards. Reruns of Penn & Teller (0.08) and Whose Line (0.07/0.07) were solid for the CW. Key: (R) = repeat.

High Potential Renewed by ABC

High Potential continues to live up to its name. The freshman procedural series has been renewed for a second season by ABC, just hours after the Alphabet Network ordered a fifth season of fellow multiplatform phenomenon Abbott Elementary. High Potential has been an excellent performer for ABC. In addition to a recent surge in linear ratings that's seen the show hitting new heights, it also currently ranks as TV's #1 entertainment program in L+7 multiplatform ratings, with a impressive 2.34 average in the key 18-49 demo, as well as being the third most-watched series in L+7, trailing just Tracker and Matlock. The first season of the series had a short, thirteen-episode order in part due to star Kaitlin Olson's busy schedule, with the actress also appearing in a starring role in FXX's It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia and a recurring, Emmy-nominated role on Max's Hacks. An episode order for the just-ordered second season has yet to be determined, but is expected to be larger than the first season. This is a correct prediction for The TV Ratings Guide.

Abbott Elementary Renewed for Season 5

School will be back in session next season on ABC, as the network has renewed hit sitcom Abbott Elementary for a fifth season. The series has been among ABC’s top performers in multiplatform viewing, and is critically acclaimed, earning numerous Emmys and other awards for creator and star Quinta Brunson. The series has also maintained a solid following in linear ratings, hitting a new series high (aside from last year’s Oscars-boosted airing) did its midseason premiere, a high-profile crossover with fellow Philly-set sitcom It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia. That boost was short-lived, but the show remains one of the top comedies on TV with a 0.36 average. Sheryl Lee Ralph, Janelle James, Lisa Ann Walter, Tyler James Williams, Chris Perfetti and William Stanford Davis star in the series. This is a correct prediction for The TV Ratings Guide.

FOX Renew/Cancel 5: Doc Will Keep Its License

 Predictions for 01/18/25

Below are the January 18th renew/cancel predictions for the Fox network in the 2024-25 television season. The numbers listed in the table mark the Nielsen rating low, average, and high for each respective program in the Adults 18-49 demographic. The "Y2Y (year-to-year) Change" column denotes how much the series has grown or declined when compared to its average from the previous season.

Doc: After debuting with a discouraging 0.19 rating in the Adults 18-49 demographic, new medical drama Doc soared to a 0.25 in episode two. It is uncommon for dramas to build on their premiere ratings, much less rise by over 30% in the key demo. In fact, Doc went from losing to the CW on January 7th to beating its NBC time slot competitor on the 14th. This 0.25 may not seem like much, but it outpaces every regularly-scheduled episode of Rescue: HI-Surf that aired in fall 2024. It also beats every installment of Accused season two and Murder in a Small Town. In 2025, Fox will gladly take a rating like this, especially from a scripted series. Doc remains Likely to be Renewed and has only strengthened its chances with this ratings spike.

Going Dutch: In its third week, Going Dutch rose back up to the 0.19 rating that it posted on premiere night. Though this is definitely better than the dreadful 0.15 it managed for the January 9th episode, more data is needed to see if it can maintain this momentum. It is currently unclear if it can hold up against harsher competition, so it will not receive an upgrade just yet. There is also minimal interest in the series on streaming, with Dutch charting well below Doc and Animal Control on Hulu. While it might end up in the green at some point, the series is still Likely to be Canceled

Murder in a Small Town: Fox recently Renewed Murder in a Small Town for a second season. This serves as a correct prediction for The TV Ratings Guide. Though its Nielsen ratings were never the best, Murder was helped out by the fact that it is a Canadian co-production. That lowered the cost for Fox and sweetened the deal.

Thursday TV Ratings 1/16/25: Hollywood Squares Starts Solidly, SVU Returns to Season High, Extreme Makeover Drops Again [+ Analysis]

Ratings Analysis: CBS's Hollywood Squares reboot (0.36) had a solid start on Thursday night, topping its time slot in both Adults 18-49 ratings and total viewers. On NBC, Law & Order (0.34, +0.02) was up slightly in its winter return, while Law & Order: SVU (0.49, +0.08), and Found (0.29, +0.07) soared to new season highs. Extreme Makeover: Home Edition (0.26, -0.03) dropped again on ABC, and Only Murders (0.15/0.12/0.10) weakened some more. ABC Renew/Cancel Week 10: Shifting Gears Shifts Into High Gear

It's been a month since the last ABC Renew/Cancel, and there have been many new entries since then, all in the last week. Not only did ABC renew a new Tuesday drama lineup, they're also debuted a new sitcom on Wednesday, finally giving Abbott Elementary another comedy to air with. Keep reading to see how these premieres went, and my outlook for them.

Wednesday TV Ratings 1/15/25: ABC Leads Coverage of President Biden’s Farewell Address, Shifting Gears and Abbott Elementary Crash, Raid the Cage and and Celebrity Jeopardy! Also Slide [+ Analysis]

Ratings Analysis: On Wednesday, the major broadcast networks reserved the first thirty minutes of the night for President Biden's farewell address. ABC's broadcast (0.46 rating/4.58 million viewers) led the way in both demo and viewership, while NBC (0.35 rating/4.20 million viewers) took second. CBS's showing of the speech (0.34 rating/3.55 million viewers) was right behind NBC, but Fox's broadcast (0.24 rating/1.55 million viewers) could not compete with the big three. After the address, it was a total bloodbath for ABC as new comedy Shifting Gears (0.38, -0.28) lost a massive chunk of last week's premiere rating, and Abbott Elementary (0.34, -0.34) dropped by a whopping 50% from the week-ago Always Sunny crossover. Celebrity Jeopardy! (0.28, -0.13) and What Would You Do? (0.19, -0.06) also declined but less so. The Price Is Right At Night (0.27, -0.10) and Raid the Cage (0.22, -0.09) slipped on CBS. NBC aired repeats of Chicago Med (0.20), Fire (0.16), and PD (0.18). Special Forces: World's Toughest Test (0.24, -0.05) shed a few hundredths on Fox. Inside the NFL (0.03, -0.01) ticked down on the CW. Key: (R) = repeat.

Murder in a Small Town Renewed by Fox

In their first renewal since the beginning of the season, and the second renewal overall after Universal Basic Guys, Fox has renewed co-production Murder in a Small Town for a second season. The procedural drama was one of several new entries on Fox this season, drawing mediocre ratings for its short Tuesday night run. While it improved on the performance of spring shows The Cleaning Lady and Alert, and rated higher than lead-out Accused, the series is one of Fox's lowest-rated series, ranking thirteenth out of sixteen shows on the network. Still, Fox produces the series with Canadian network Global, with Global taking on the brunt of production expenditures, making it a cost-effective entry for the network that has struggled in recent times to make any scripted shows stick in recent seasons. Kristin Kreuk and Rossif Sutherland star in the series. This is a correct prediction for The TV Ratings Guide.

Ratings Analysis: ABC dramas Will Trent (0.47, -0.03) and High Potential (0.49, -0.01) barely declined from last week's strong returns and remained on top. At 10, The Rookie (0.33, -0.01) was a notch below its peers but still won its hour. On Fox, Kitchen Nightmares (0.29, +0.06) and Doc (0.25, +0.06) were both up markedly from their lackluster premiere ratings. St. Denis Medical (0.27, -0.03) set a new series low on NBC, while Night Court (0.24, +0.04) recovered. Deal or No Deal Island (0.24, -0.10) plummeted in the 9 p.m. hour, and The Irrational (0.16, -0.02) dropped as well. Monday TV Ratings 1/13/25: Vikings/Rams NFL Wild Card Game Dominates, American Dad! Ticks Up, Kids Baking Championship and The Rachel Maddow Show Tumble [+ Analysis]

CBS aired encores of The Neighborhood (0.29), Poppa's House (0.23), NCIS (0.20), and NCIS: Origins (0.15). NBC went with reruns of Deal or No Deal Island (0.17) and Law & Order: SVU (0.11). Sunday TV Ratings 1/12/25: When Calls the Heart and Mayfair Witches Rise, Enormous Eagles/Packers NFL Game Easily Leads [+ Analysis]

Ratings Analysis: On Fox, the Eagles v. Packers NFL game posted an enormous 9.02 rating in the Adults 18-49 demographic. After the game and The OT (4.60), the network used their Nielsen riches to boost reruns of Doc (0.88), Animal Control (0.30), and Going Dutch (0.22). All three went above their last original airings. NBC's Commanders v. Buccaneers NFL game (6.40) brought in massive ratings but trailed Fox's matchup. America's Funniest Home Videos (0.26, -0.01) ticked down on ABC and led into a pilot encore of Shifting Gears (0.15). Later in the night, a broadcast of the 2008 film Marley & Me (0.09) bombed. CBS aired 60 Minutes (0.37) and reruns of NCIS: Origins (0.18/0.13/0.12). The CW aired The Wedding Planner (0.04) and a Whose Line repeat (0.02). Key: (R) = repeat.

St. Denis Medical Renewed by NBC

NBC's first renewal of the season has arrived. Freshman sitcom St. Denis Medical, which debuted to strong ratings and has thus far settled as NBC's top comedy, has received a renewal for a second season, just six episodes into its run. While the series was unable to hold anywhere near the 0.51 rating it premiered to, the 0.3s it has drawn for most episodes since are still a solid outing for an NBC comedy, with most of the Peacock networks' comedies often struggling to remain competitive with the other networks. It currently rates as NBC's #3 series this season, narrowly out-rating long-running hits like SVU and Chicago PD. The series is also said to be a strong streaming performer for NBC, with the network touting the show's growth on streaming in the week after its premiere, rising over 80% from its live rating that week. NBC showed confidence in this show early on, extending its season one order months before it even began, and giving it the 8 PM anchor slot on Tuesday, pushing Night Court to the bottom of the hour in the process. The series stars Wendi McLendon-Covey, Allison Tolman, Kaliko Kauahi and David Alan Grier, who was nominated for a Critics Choice Award for his work on the series, with the show also receiving a nod for Best Comedy Series. This is a correct prediction for The TV Ratings Guide.

Saturday TV Ratings 1/11/25: Polar Opposites OK on Hallmark, NFL Inflates FBI: International and FBI: Most Wanted Encores, On Patrol: Live Rises [+ Analysis]

Ratings Analysis: CBS's encores of FBI: International (0.77) and FBI: Most Wanted (0.31) enjoyed some NFL inflation, but it was mostly gone by the time an original 48 Hours (0.26, +0.09) aired. ABC aired repeats of Celebrity Jeopardy! (0.15) and Extreme Makeover: Home Edition (0.10/0.09). Reruns of The Wall (0.15), Dateline (0.19), and Saturday Night Live (0.16) aired on NBC. College basketball on Fox (0.12) improved on yesterday's game (0.10). The CW went with a repeat of WWE NXT (0.04). Key: (R) = repeat.

FOX Renew/Cancel 4: Going Dutch Is Going, Going, Gone

Predictions for 01/11/25

Below are the January 11th renew/cancel predictions for the Fox network in the 2024-25 television season. The numbers listed in the table mark the Nielsen rating low, average, and high for each respective program in the Adults 18-49 demographic. The "Y2Y (year-to-year) Change" column denotes how much the series has grown or declined when compared to its average from the previous season.

Going Dutch:
On January 2nd, Going Dutch posted a tepid 0.19 rating for its series premiere. In its second week, the series dropped to a meager 0.15 in the Adults 18-49 demographic, a decline worse than its Animal Control lead-in. Since Dutch is one of only two live-action sitcoms on Fox, the network may want to keep it around to build up a comedy roster. However, it has already left a poor impression with these abysmal Nielsen ratings, and it's only downhill from here once CBS and NBC return to airing originals. Fox is lenient when it comes to renewing struggling performers, but they can do better than this. If Fox needs something to pair with Animal Control, they can order a new sitcom next season or bring one of their benched cartoons back on the field. For now, Dutch does not appear to be a viable player. As a result, it is Likely to be Canceled

Doc: In its debut, Doc came onto the scene with the same 0.19 rating that Dutch posted. In theory, it should be on the wrong side of the bubble, but Fox usually gives their new dramas some time to build an audience. Doc has yet to fall as low as Dutch and was only a hundredth below the time slot premiere of Rescue: HI-Surf, a series that had ample NFL help in its debut. For those reasons, Doc begins as a Likely Renewal, albeit a shaky one.

Animal Control: Animal Control began its third season with a 0.21 in the Adults 18-49 demographic, matching the rating it posted for its season two premiere. In week two, the comedy dipped to a 0.18 while its Hell's Kitchen lead-in grew in size. Though its latest performance leaves much to be desired, this comedy still enters the chart as a Certain Renewal. Fox was perfectly content with keeping Animal Control around in 2024, even as it went as low as a 0.17 with a Masked Singer lead-in. So far, its numbers have stayed in the same ballpark as last year despite a reduced lead-in, so it should have no problem securing a fourth season pickup.

The Great North: Season five of The Great North debuted in an odd way. Fox quietly placed the premiere in between a pair of reruns in late December. Because of this, the long-running animated comedy returned with a feeble 0.16 rating. But, despite its Nielsen woes, The Great North is Likely to be Renewed. Fox is committed to maintaining a strong animation presence, and North does no worse than the toons that have already been renewed. This is the first Fox cartoon since Bob's Burgers to make it to five seasons, so the network clearly wants to build up its stockpile for a potential syndication deal. Expect the Tobin family to stick around for a little while longer.
