FOX Renew/Cancel 3: Can HI-Surf Stay Afloat?

Predictions for 11/30/24

Below are the November 30th renew/cancel predictions for the Fox network in the 2024-25 television season. The numbers listed in the table mark the Nielsen rating low, average, and high for each respective program in the Adults 18-49 demographic. The "Y2Y (year-to-year) Change" column denotes how much the series has grown or declined when compared to its average from the previous season.

Rescue: HI-Surf: Fox recently unveiled its midseason schedule and simultaneously revealed that new drama Rescue: HI-Surf will no longer be airing after the Super Bowl. Instead, the network is going with a safer option by installing Rob Lowe game show The Floor as the direct lead-out to the game. As a result, HI-Surf is now Likely to be Canceled. Fox went out of their way to remove one of their newest shows from the best slot possible, so it is clear that they no longer have confidence in it. Though the post-Super Bowl slot rarely builds an audience for a show, it's still a chance for millions of new viewers to sample the network's latest product. It is clear that Fox would rather have a reliable unscripted series like The Floor there instead of a struggling newbie. Even though HI-Surf did rise to a 0.18 for its midseason finale, it has previously gone as low as a 0.14. These ratings are not strong enough to warrant a renewal, so it is unlikely that this freshman drama will stay afloat.

Murder in a Small Town: Crime drama Murder in a Small Town finished its inaugural season with a tepid 0.19 rating in the Adults 18-49 demographic. The series has not been a winner in the key demo, but it remains Likely to be Renewed. If Global, the Canadian network that co-produces Murder, is willing to stay on board, then Fox has little reason to stop airing the series. The Cleaning Lady and Alert scored pickups with even smaller ratings, so this one will stay on the right side of the bubble.

The Simpsons: The Simpsons is currently having a particularly rough season. Despite frequent NFL inflation and two Treehouse of Horror specials, it has not been able to get a 1 before the decimal point. To make matters worse, Universal Basic Guys has upstaged it in the retention department when given the direct football lead-in. The Simpsons is still Certain to be Renewed, but it seems to be weakening to a point where not even football can mask its shortcomings.

What’s Trending on Streaming: Daily Trending Lists for Hulu, Disney+, Peacock, Paramount+ and Max from November 24-November 30

Another week has passed, and we've got another update to the streaming trending lists. The Thanksgiving holiday has left the streamers with less content than usual, though we still had some new entries this week, and some finales. Plus, we have a shakeup to how Hulu's top fifteen chart will be updated moving forward!

Holiday Special Report Card

Holiday Special Report Card
A still from the NBC special.

Immediately after Thanksgiving ends, the major broadcast networks comb through their holiday special libraries to find the classic cartoons that will perform the best. Certain staples like Rudolph and Grinch have been around for decades, while others like How to Train Your Dragon: Homecoming and Kung Fu Panda Holiday quickly faded away. Below is a chart detailing how the animated Christmas specials that aired in 2023 performed in the Adults 18-49 demographic*.

*Overall Average: 0.255

Reindeer in Here: Reindeer in Here debuted in November 2022 with a solid 0.42 rating, retaining a respectable amount of the 0.66 that its Rudolph lead-in posted. In 2023, Reindeer perked up to a 0.43 rating for its Saturday showing but was undoubtedly inflated by a football lead-in. This one clearly does not belong at the top of this list, but the power of NFL help elevated it to the number one spot. In 2024, expect it to be closer to the 0.21 it posted for its second 2022 telecast, unless it gets boosted again. Grade: B

How The Grinch Stole Christmas: Grinch managed a 0.41 for its first 2023 showing and then dropped to a 0.32 for its second. Though it remains one of the highest-rated of the bunch, it was down about 25% from 2022 (0.41 vs. 0.55) for the first airing. The year-to-year drop is a little concerning, but it's still a force despite the decline. This one gets an for the actual ratings but a C for the overall trend. Grade: B

Santa Claus is Comin' to Town: Santa Claus is Comin' to Town posted a 0.38 for its first telecast of December 2023, dealing with a light 14% dip from 2022's 0.44. It got to air again on Friday the 22nd and managed a solid 0.35. This Christmas staple aged gracefully in 2023 and impressed when placed on the air a second time. This feels like the healthiest of the current crop of specials, and ABC is lucky to have the rights to it. Grade: A

Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer: Rudolph posted a massive 0.66 in 2022 but only managed a 0.39 last year, marking a 41% decline for the famous reindeer. It's still at the top of the pack, but this is an even worse decline than Grinch. If we're looking at the ratings themselves, this would be at least a B+. However, it gets a C- or a D+ when it comes to the year-to-year trend. Grade: B-

Prep & Landing: Prep & Landing and its sequel Naughty vs. Nice have been a part of ABC's holiday lineup since 2009 and 2011 respectively. In 2023, they both dropped by four-hundredths, with the original managing a 0.30 and the sequel posting a 0.28. These numbers are just fine. This is clearly not an IP with some sort of massive following behind it, so this is not terrible given that these two have been around for over a decade now. It's possible that they will eventually slip out of rotation, but they seem safe now that ABC no longer has the Peanuts library at their disposal. The Alphabet Network will probably want a meaningful cartoon presence for the holiday season, and these two fit the bill. Grade: C

Shrek the Halls: Though other franchise-based specials like Toy Story That Time Forgot, Ice Age: A Mammoth Christmas, and Merry Madagascar have fallen out of circulation, Shrek the Halls has proved to have some serious staying power. Shrek was a staple on ABC's Christmas lineup from 2007 to 2021 before being benched in 2022. NBC came to the rescue in 2023 and awarded it the post-Grinch slot. Shrek managed a strong 0.36 rating for its first showing and nearly eclipsed its final ABC broadcast (0.39) in the process. The 88% retention out of Grinch was remarkable, showing the incredible compatibility of this duo. And while the second showing only managed a 0.19, that one had the bad luck of airing on a Saturday, meaning many had already had their dose of Shrek for the year. Shrek may not be in the same league as a Frosty or a Rudolph just yet, but it is a seasoned veteran in its own right, especially compared to some of the newer disappointments. Thanks to the NBC pickup, this one likely has a bright future of yearly broadcasts ahead of it. Grade: B

Frosty the Snowman: Frosty dropped by almost 40% from its 2022 showing, going from a 0.43 to a 0.26. However, it retained most of the Rudolph encore (0.27) that led into it and had less lead-in help than in years past. For a Saturday, this is a fine performance. But, maybe more should be expected from a name like Frosty, so it gets some points knocked off for not being in the same league as the big 3. Grade: C

Frosty Returns: This one did a 0.33 in 2022 with a 0.43 lead-in and a 0.24 in 2023 with a 0.26 lead-in. Retention has clearly gotten stronger even though ratings diminished. Frosty Returns is a nice companion piece to the original Frosty, even though it usually lags behind. Since it dropped less than the original Frosty, it gets the better grade. Grade: C+

Olaf's Frozen Adventure: In its first 2023 showing, Olaf managed a meager 0.19 rating, falling a bit from its Mickey lead-in (0.21). In showing #2, Olaf grew to a 0.25 and easily outpaced its Mickey lead-out (0.20). Though any kind of growth is good, there really isn't much of a difference between these two performances strength-wise. The first aired in the dreadful 7:30 p.m. time slot and struggled, while the second had the local lead-in advantage and benefited because of it. All things considered, Olaf is a modest, albeit unremarkable, performer. Grade: C-

Robbie the Reindeer: Robbie the Reindeer is one of the more obscure items on here, and CBS clearly knows that as they only air it once a year...on a Saturday. Robbie averaged a 0.22 in 2023 for the two installments that aired (Hooves of Fire & Legend of the Lost Tribe). This is not particularly encouraging, especially with a 0.43 lead-in, but there are clearly weaker performers here. Robbie was way down from the 0.35 it managed in 2022, but it's possible that some sports inflation was baked into that airing. When looking at the broadcast history of this one, CBS had it on for a few years in the early 2000's, but it was completely absent from 2006 to 2015. With this abysmal showing and Reindeer in Here putting up larger numbers, it wouldn't be a surprise if they decided to shelve Robbie again. Grade: D

Mickey Saves Christmas: Mickey Saves Christmas exists in a strange space in the Christmas special ecosystem. The Mickey Mouse brand itself may be one of the oldest IPs on this list, but Saves Christmas is one of the newest specials on here, having just debuted in November 2022. Interest in this special is clearly not there as it only managed a 0.21 for its first showing and a 0.20 for its second. Though the 0.21 could be excused since it was placed in the 7 p.m. death slot on a Sunday night, it got to air on a Tuesday at 8:30 the second time around and did not improve. Considering that its grand 2022 premiere only managed a 0.28, it really didn't decline that much from where it started. Still, far more should be expected from the Mickey brand, and this one will probably fall out of rotation in the near future. Grade: D-

Trolls: Holiday in Harmony: Trolls: Holiday in Harmony is the second Trolls-based Christmas special to be made and seems to have knocked its predecessor (Trolls Holiday) out of rotation. Trolls Holiday managed a mammoth 1.5 for its 2017 launch but crashed to a 0.1 just two years later. Holiday in Harmony debuted in 2021 with a 0.35 and slipped to a 0.33 in 2022, nowhere near the highs of the special that came before it but also nowhere near the lows. In 2023, it aired on a Saturday and plummeted to a 0.20. It deserves a bit of praise for building on Shrek by 0.01, but this is nothing phenomenal. Holiday in Harmony probably won't stick around for much longer, but it did fine given the downgrade in time slot and night. Grade: C-

5 More Sleeps 'Til Christmas: 5 More Sleeps 'Til Christmas debuted in 2021 with a 0.40 and returned in 2022 with a 0.30. In 2023, it was removed from its 8pm at Fridays perch and was instead placed in the much more challenging 7pm slot on a Sunday. It completely bombed, posting just a 0.08 and dropping by over 70% from the 2022 showing. This one had an uphill battle given its terrible time slot, but that does not excuse the outright collapse. It would be a Christmas miracle if this one returned in 2024. Grade: F

Grandma Got Run Over By a Reindeer: Grandma Got Run Over By a Reindeer is the lone holiday special that the CW airs regularly, though they have aired titles like It's A Very Merry Muppet Christmas Movie and Merry Madagascar in the past. Grandma is an inoffensive performer for the CW. Its ratings are nothing spectacular, but it is on par with the rest of the network's programming. Considering how often it airs, it will likely stick around. Grade: C

Tuesday TV Ratings 11/26/24: Dancing with the Stars Explodes to Highest Finale Rating Since 2017, Murder in a Small Town Also Ends Higher, Night Court Rises in Week Two [+ Analysis]

Ratings Analysis: ABC's Dancing with the Stars (1.14, +0.39) exploded to a new season high on finale night, soaring to its best Adults 18-49 performance since September 2020! The reality-competition series cleared the 1.0 threshold effortlessly and posted a rating over 3x larger than its nearest broadcast competitor. On NBC, St. Denis Medical (0.33, -0.01) lost a hundredth, but Night Court (0.32, +0.04) was up from last week's premiere. The Voice (0.35, +0.03) and The Irrational (0.19, +0.02) also rose. CBS aired repeats of FBI (0.25), FBI: International (0.21), and FBI: Most Wanted (0.19). Over on Fox, Murder in a Small Town (0.19, +0.03) gained some momentum for its finale and brought Accused (0.17, +0.05) up with it. WWE NXT (0.15, -0.04) dropped on the CW. Key: (R) = repeat. (F) = finale.

Key: (R) = repeat.

Sunday TV Ratings 11/24/24: Yellowstone Rises Again, Tracker and The Equalizer Drop, To Have and To Holiday Solid on Hallmark [+ Analysis]

Ratings Analysis: There was no NFL help on CBS, so 60 Minutes (0.43, -0.86), Tracker (0.46, -0.16), and The Equalizer (0.28, -0.07) all slipped. Fox had NFL Overrun (5.85) and The OT (2.45), so The Simpsons (0.67, +0.45), Universal Basic Guys (0.39, +0.17), Bob's Burgers (0.38, +0.13), and Krapopolis (0.25, +0.08) all rose. ABC aired two America's Funniest Home Videos originals (0.26/0.25) and followed that up with the Disney film Moana (0.16). NBC's Eagles v. Rams NFL game (4.48) was almost three-tenths higher than the week-ago game. Shrek 2 (0.08) performed well by CW standards. Key: (R) = repeat.

Saturday TV Ratings 11/23/24: Three Wiser Men and a Boy Strong on Hallmark, Alabama/Oklahoma College Football Game Easily Leads [+ Analysis]

Ratings Analysis: ABC's Alabama/Oklahoma college football game (1.54) was the highest-rated broadcast on Saturday night, easily eclipsing NBC's games (0.91/0.50). Fox's game (0.44) took third but still outpaced CBS's NWSL Soccer Championship broadcast (0.25). The CW's college football game (0.11) performed well by the network's standards.

On ABC, Shark Tank (0.31, +0.13) and 20/20 (0.27, +0.09) soared in a similar manner. NBC sitcoms Happy's Place (0.23, +0.02) and Lopez vs Lopez (0.19, +0.03) were up but not nearly as much as the others. Dateline (0.18, +0.05) also rose. College football on Fox (0.34) was a tenth above last week. Even the CW's Bob Hearts Abishola reruns (0.05/0.04/0.04/0.05) were above the week-ago batch. Key: (R) = repeat.

Reba McEntire's return to sitcoms has been extended. The Queen of Country's latest sitcom, Happy's Place, which has performed solidly for NBC on Friday nights this fall, has had its first season order extended to eighteen episodes, up from the initial thirteen. It was reported earlier this month that NBC had ordered three new scripts for the series, indicating interested in an extension, with the network ultimately ordering five new completed episodes. There is no word yet on whether Lopez vs Lopez, which also had an initial order of thirteen episodes and was said to have had three new scripts ordered, has also been extended. Happy's Place reunites McEntire with her Reba co-star Melissa Peterman, as well as her Big Sky co-star and boyfriend Rex Linn. Belissa Escobedo also stars in the series as McEntire's long-lost sister.

Tuesday TV Ratings 11/19/24: Night Court Returns Lower, St. Denis Medical Slides, Dancing with the Stars Rises [+ Analysis]

Ratings Analysis: On season premiere night, NBC's Night Court (0.28) was down from its March 2024 finale (0.30) and could only tie last season's low. Earlier in the night, St. Denis Medical (0.34, -0.11) dealt with a sizable post-premiere drop. The Voice (0.32, -0.07) slipped in the 9 p.m. hour and led into the special Defying Gravity: The Curtain Rises on Wicked (0.20). Dancing with the Stars (0.75, +0.04) grew some more on ABC, but the 10 p.m. special Vegas Lights & Country Nights: Countdown to the CMA Awards (0.15) completely flopped. FBI (0.38, +0.02), FBI: International (0.31, +0.03), and FBI: Most Wanted (0.30, +0.01) all ticked up on CBS. On NBC, The Voice (0.38, -0.06) and Brilliant Minds (0.17, -0.02) both declined. ABC's Texans/Cowboys NFL game (1.46) was the top-rated program on broadcast. Fox aired repeats of The Simpsons (0.22), Universal Basic Guys (0.21), Bob's Burgers (0.17), and Krapopolis (0.13). The CW aired the film The Holiday (0.06). Key: (R) = repeat.

ABC's college football game (2.39) was more than two full ratings points above Fox's (0.22). The CW aired A Waltons Thanksgiving (0.02). Key: (R) = repeat.

Friday TV Ratings 11/15/24: SWAT Leads Broadcast as All Scripted Shows Sink to New Lows, Christmas with the Singhs Weak for Hallmark [+ Analysis]

Ratings Analysis: It was an abysmal Friday night for the broadcast networks as practically every show took a hit, likely because of Netflix's highly-anticipated fight between Jake Paul and Mike Tyson. CBS's SWAT (0.26, -0.05) was the top-rated non-cable program but was still down markedly from last week. Fire Country (0.24, -0.11) and Blue Bloods (0.22, -0.06) declined by even more. On ABC, Shark Tank (0.18, -0.08) and 20/20 (0.18, -0.06) nosedived. Happy's Place (0.21, -0.06), Lopez vs Lopez (0.16, -0.02), and Dateline (0.13, -0.04) all slipped on NBC. Fox's UCLA/WA college football game (0.24) was a notch below the network's former Friday-night staple WWE Smackdown (0.32). The CW aired repeats of CBS sitcom Bob Hearts Abishola (0.05/0.03/0.03/0.03). Key: (R) = repeat.

This year, Hallmark's films are down significantly from that average thus far, though it has been strengthening in recent weeks as Christmas grows closer. Lucky 13 Canceled by ABC

Midseason may be approaching, but ABC has just now announced the fate of one show from their summer lineup. Lucky 13, the new game show that aired Thursday nights with Press Your Luck, has been canceled after a single season. Hosted by Gina Rodriguez and Shaquille O'Neal, the show aired ten episodes over its single season, and averaged just 0.20 in the key demo, sinking as low as 0.14 as it was tossed across the schedule to fill whatever slots ABC needed it in. It was ABC's only new show on their slimmed-down summer lineup, and also their lowest-rated. This was a correct prediction for The TV Ratings Guide.
