Law & Order: Organized Crime Canceled by NBC, Expected to Move to Peacock for Season 5

Detective Elliot Stabler's time on NBC is coming to a close, as Law & Order: Organized Crime will not return for a fifth season on the network. Despite that, the show will most likely live on, as a deal is being finalized for it to move to Peacock for a ten-episode season. This will almost certainly put an end to the Thursday night Law & Order block on NBC, which first came together in winter 2022, after the original Law & Order series was revived. There were hints that NBC was dissatisfied with the all-Law & Order block, as their initial fall 2023 schedule had Organized Crime benched in favor of new drama Found. Though it posted decent ratings for 10 PM, with a 0.36 average thus far, the network decided to cancel the show after its fourth season. Its retention from parent show SVU was middling at best, and it shed 25% of its season three audience this season. Creator Dick Wolf's shows are a key draw for NBCUniversal's streaming service, Peacock, and, if the deal for season five goes through, Organized Crime will be the first Wolf series to be a Peacock exclusive. Chris Meloni stars in the series, reprising his iconic role from SVU, alongside Ainsley Seiger, Danielle Moné Truitt, and Rick Gonzalez. This is a correct prediction for The TV Ratings Guide.

The Equalizer Renewed for Season 5

CBS continues to secure its programming for next season, this time renewing the Queen Latifah-led procedural The Equalizer for a fifth season. The series, a reboot of the 1985 Ed Woodward series of the same name, has been a solid performer for CBS since its debut behind Super Bowl LV in 2021. This season, the series averaged 0.47 in the key 18-49 demo, being slightly overshadowed by its lead-out, Tracker. Despite that, it has consistently rated as one of the top programs on Sunday nights and is CBS's #5 scripted show this season, only rating behind Thursday comedies Young Sheldon and Ghosts, FBI, and the aforementioned Tracker. The fifth season will run for eighteen episodes, steady with its second and third seasons. Lorraine Toussaint, Liza Lapira, Tory Kittles, Adam Goldberg and Laya DeLeon Hayes star alongside Queen Latifah. This is a correct prediction for The TV Ratings Guide, and leaves NCIS: Hawai'i as CBS's only show with its fate still in limbo.

Analysis to come.

Saturday TV Ratings 4/20/24: NBA Playoffs Dominate, SNL Vintage Takes Extremely Distant Second (Final Ratings w/Analysis)

Ratings Analysis: ABC's broadcast of the Lakers v. Nuggets game dominated in both the Adults 18-49 demographic (1.66) and in total viewership (5.65 million). Fox's UFL game (0.17) was a hundredth higher than last week's but still no match for the NBA Playoffs. NBC aired reruns of The Wall (0.13), Weakest Link (0.18), and SNL Vintage (0.20). 48 Hours (0.18, -0.11) came crashing down on CBS. I Am Patrick Swayze (0.06) was a hundredth higher than last week's I Am Heath Ledger (0.05) on the CW.

CW Renew/Cancel Part 1: All American’s Ratings Are All Right, but the End Is Nigh

Welcome to the all-new CW Renew/Cancel! There has been massive shakeups at the network since our last column in May of 2023, with the new owners completely reshaping what the CW is what what it airs. The network is now home to a heavily-unscripted slate, with nearly all of its scripted programs being acquired programs from Canada and the UK. However, some originals do remain, as do several co-productions. For this renew/cancel, we're only predicting CW originals like All American and Walker, as well as international shows that CW has a hand in producing, like Wild Cards and Son of a Critch. These are shows that, while other networks hold much of the power for determining renewals, CW has at least some stake in them and will have a sway in the decisions. This means fully acquired shows, like Children Ruin Everything, Family Law, and The Conners will not appear in this chart, though you can still get predictions for The Conners in our ABC Renew/Cancel.

Friday TV Ratings 4/19/24: Shark Tank and WWE SmackDown Decline, SWAT Stable, Billy Joel Repeat Decent (Final Ratings w/Analysis)

Ratings Analysis: Fox's WWE Smackdown (0.63, -0.13) declined dramatically in the key demo but held onto its lead nonetheless. On ABC, Shark Tank (0.31, -0.01) and 20/20 (0.24, -0.07) dropped from their week-ago episodes. CBS's SWAT (0.36, 0.00) was even with last week's installment and led into a solid encore of Billy Joel: The 100th (0.26). That encore ended up beating NBC's Password rerun (0.18) and Dateline original (0.24, -0.02). Penn & Teller: Fool Us (0.06, 0.00) tied its last original on the CW.

FOX Renew/Cancel Week 25: "Family Guy" Fantasy Scheduling

Predictions for 04/21/24

Below are the Week 25 renew/cancel predictions for the Fox network in the 2023-24 television season. The numbers listed in the table mark the Nielsen rating low, average, and high for each respective program in the Adults 18-49 demographic. The "Y2Y (year-to-year) Change" column denotes how much the series has grown or declined when compared to its average from the previous season. Scripted and reality are represented in their own separate charts.

The 22nd season of Family Guy wrapped up on Wednesday, April 17th with a meager 0.17 rating in the Adults 18-49 demographic. The long-running animated series has clearly struggled since moving away from Sunday night, even if live ratings barely matter when it comes to deciding whether this series gets renewed or not. Family Guy is clearly here to stay, but it's possible that it may not be on Fox forever. In fact, the recent announcement that Hulu will be the show's exclusive home for two upcoming holiday specials makes a move to streaming seem inevitable.

When looking back at this season, there was clearly a way to keep this series from having to switch nights. If Fox had something else to air in the 9:30 slot on Wednesdays, Family Guy could have easily aired the 6 Wednesday episodes on Sunday. Below is a breakdown of this fantasy scheduling scenario.

09/24/23: On this evening, Krapopolis debuted in the 8 p.m. time slot with an hour-long premiere that was inflated by football. Instead of airing a rerun of The Masked Singer at 9, Fox could have placed two episodes of Family Guy here. This would have served as the show's own one-hour season premiere. Family Guy would have had a decent amount of NFL help, enough to bring it up to a 0.4 rating at the very least. This takes care of 2 episodes.

10/29/23: Fox aired a rerun of Family Guy on October 29th and it managed a 0.24, a rating higher than any of its Wednesday episodes. If an original episode had aired here instead, it would have done the same or better. That takes care of 1 more episode.

12/24/23: A massive NFL lead-in on Christmas Eve catapulted The Simpsons to a 1.8 rating. Family Guy aired as a rerun on this night and managed a 0.43, a rating higher than most of its originals from this season. Had a new Family Guy aired directly after The Simpsons at 8:30, it could have possibly managed a rating in the 0.9-1.2 range. That takes cares of 1 episode.

01/14/24: The 2 remaining episodes could have aired as part of a one-hour season finale on January 14th. On this evening, an episode of We Are Family managed a football-boosted 1.17 rating. Instead of cartoon repeats taking up the 9 p.m. hour, Family Guy could have closed out its season in this slot.

So Help Me Todd and CSI: Vegas Canceled by CBS

CBS continues to whittle down the number of shows with outstanding fates. One day after renewing freshman Thursday drama Elsbeth, the Tiffany Network has canceled two series. Legal dramedy So Help Me Todd has been canceled after two seasons, while CSI reboot CSI: Vegas has been canceled after three seasons. Both series rated towards the bottom of CBS' scripted pack, with Todd and CSI squandering strong lead-ins - Ghosts and Tracker, respectively. Both series rated nearly the same as they did last season, with Todd down 4% and CSI: Vegas up 3%, marking some of the best year-to-year trends on broadcast. That was not enough to save either show, as CBS has a full slate heading into next season, having already ordered five new shows, including three new hour-long dramas. Marcia Gay Harden and Skylar Astin headed the cast of So Help Me Todd, while CSI: Vegas featured Paula Newsome and Matt Lauria in lead roles. The cancellation of So Help Me Todd is a correct prediction for The TV Ratings Guide, while CSI: Vegas is a miss. These decisions leave just two shows - The Equalizer and NCIS: Hawai'i - awaiting decisions.

Thursday TV Ratings 4/18/24: Ghosts and Law & Order: SVU Lead the Night, Young Sheldon and So Help Me Todd Slip, Elsbeth Stable (Final Ratings w/Analysis)

Ratings Analysis: Young Sheldon (0.49, -0.09) nearly lost a full tenth on CBS, but Ghosts (0.50, -0.05) declined by a smaller amount and built on its lead-in. So Help Me Todd (0.33, -0.02) also slipped, but Elsbeth (0.28, 0.00) was stable. NBC was up across the board as Law & Order (0.36, +0.08), Law & Order: SVU (0.50, +0.17), and Organized Crime (0.33, +0.06) all surged, with SVU rising by close to two-tenths. Next Level Chef (0.37, +0.03) and Farmer Wants a Wife (0.27, +0.07) shot up on Fox, with Farmer setting a new season high. Patti Stanger: The Matchmaker (0.06, +0.03) doubled last week's premiere rating on the CW. ABC re-ran 9-1-1 (0.19/0.17/0.18).

Wednesday TV Ratings 4/17/24: Survivor and The Conners Jump, Abbott Elementary Drops to New Low, Family Guy Slips for Finale (Final Ratings w/Analysis)

Ratings Analysis: Though it declined for its 100th episode last week, ABC's The Conners (0.39, +0.05) grew for its 101st installment in a pretty noticeable way. But things got legitimately shaky after that as Not Dead Yet (0.23, -0.03) slipped, and Abbott Elementary (0.27, -0.05) crashed to a new series low. On Fox, The Masked Singer (0.40, -0.08) and Animal Control (0.18, -0.05) were heavily down, but Family Guy (0.17, -0.02) had a more mild dip for its season finale. Survivor (0.77, +0.08) and The Amazing Race (0.37, +0.03) increased in size on CBS. NBC's reruns of Chicago Med (0.22), Fire (0.22), and PD (0.19) beat out the Fox sitcoms in the key demo. Walker (0.06, -0.02) slipped on the CW, but Sight Unseen (0.05, +0.02) recovered a bit.

Elsbeth Renewed by CBS

CBS continues to lock down their programming for next season. This time, they have renewed their latest show, police procedural Elsbeth, for a second season. The show, starring Carrie Preston reprising her Emmy-winning role from The Good Wife, premiered February 29 before taking a one-month break. Despite that, it has performed well enough for CBS, averaging 0.30 in the key 18-49 demo and drawing over ten million viewers in multiplatform viewing. The series is the latest collaboration between CBS and married creatives Robert and Michelle King, who also created the aforementioned Good Wife and its first spinoff, The Good Fight, as well as CBS-turned-Paramount+ drama Evil. Elsbeth was one of only two new scripted originals on CBS this season, the other being the breakout hit Tracker, as the WGA and SAG strikes impacted scripted content on all of TV in the first half of the season. This is a correct prediction for The TV Ratings Guide.

Tuesday TV Ratings 4/16/24: Weakest Link and FBI: Most Wanted Slip, The Cleaning Lady and Alert Rise, FBI Stays #1 (Final Ratings w/Analysis)

Ratings Analysis: NBC's Lopez vs Lopez (0.26) was a hundredth shy of last week's 8 p.m. episode but posted the same 0.21 it did on the 9th at 8:30. From there, Weakest Link (0.21, -0.03) lost a few ticks, but Password (0.26, +0.02) grew at 10. On CBS, FBI (0.50, 0.00) was flat, FBI: International (0.42, +0.02) inched up, and FBI: Most Wanted (0.39, -0.01) ticked down. Both The Cleaning Lady (0.16, +0.05) and Alert (0.17, +0.05) bounced back on Fox after setting new series lows last week. ABC aired reruns of Will Trent (0.17), The Rookie (0.12), and The Good Doctor (0.10). Crime Nation (0.07, +0.02) was up on the CW.

Friday Cable Ratings 4/12/24: The Masters Dominates, RuPaul’s Drag Race Rises, BMF Hits Series Low

Monday TV Ratings 4/15/24: The Neighborhood Tops The 8PM Hour, NCIS Rises for 1000th Episode of the NCISVerse, American Idol Hits All-Time Low (Final Ratings w/Analysis)

Ratings Analysis: CBS's The Neighborhood (0.42, 0.00) matched its last original and topped the 8 p.m. hour, but Bob Hearts Abishola (0.33, -0.03) and NCIS: Hawai'i (0.31, -0.01) slipped. In-between those two, NCIS (0.43, +0.05) rose significantly for the 1000th episode of the NCISVerse and was the top-rated program of the night. American Idol (0.36, -0.11) collapsed on ABC, but The Interrogation Tapes (0.24, +0.04) improved in the 10 p.m. slot. NBC's The Voice (0.41, -0.01) shed a hundredth, while Deal or No Deal Island (0.31, +0.06) surged at 10. MasterChef Junior (0.27, -0.02) dipped on Fox, but So You Think You Can Dance (0.15, 0.00) was stable, as was The CW's All American (0.09, 0.00).

Sunday TV Ratings 4/14/24: Billy Joel Special Solid on CBS, The Great North Rises for Double Episode, American Idol Also Ticks Up (Final Ratings w/Analysis)

Ratings Analysis: Billy Joel: The 100th (0.47) provided CBS with a strong rating and retained more than 80% of its Tracker lead-in (0.56, +0.02). Earlier in the night, The Masters (1.78) boosted 60 Minutes (0.86, +0.50) in a significant way, with the newsmagazine staple growing by five-tenths. On Fox, The Great North (0.17, +0.03) occupied the 8:30-9:30 p.m. stretch and was up from last week, even though it still had a lower average than the Simpsons rerun (0.18) that led into the 8:30 episode. Grimsburg (0.12, +0.02) was also on the rise. ABC's American Idol (0.48, +0.03) bested last Sunday's installment. NBC aired more repeats of Weakest Link (0.14), The Voice (0.12), and Dateline (0.12). The CW doubled last week's 13 Going on 30 rating (0.04) with 10 Things I Hate About You (0.08).

Saturday TV Ratings 4/13/24: SNL Slips in Demo but Rises in Viewers, 48 Hours Soars (Final Ratings w/Analysis)

Ratings Analysis: Saturday Night Live (0.75, -0.07) dropped in the 18-49 demographic despite the inclusion of host Ryan Gosling, but it was up slightly in total viewership (4.7 million v. 4.58 million). NBC started the evening off with repeats of The Wall (0.15), Weakest Link (0.15), and Saturday Night Live itself (0.30). On CBS, 48 Hours (0.29, +0.14) nearly doubled last week's rating. Reruns of So Help Me Todd (0.22) and 48 Hours itself (0.23) were also significantly higher than the encores (0.10/0.11) that aired a week ago. On the sports front, Fox's UFL (0.16) was no match for ABC's NHL Broadcast (0.25). I Am Heath Ledger (0.05) performed slightly better than last week's I Am Paul Walker (0.03) on the CW.

Friday TV Ratings 4/12/24: Fire Country Slips for Backdoor Pilot, SWAT and Shark Tank Rise, WWE SmackDown Remains Dominant (Final Ratings w/Analysis)

Ratings Analysis: Shemar Moore series SWAT (0.36, +0.03) was up on CBS, but fellow dramas Fire Country (0.35, -0.03) and Blue Bloods (0.31, -0.01) lost some ground. ABC's Shark Tank (0.32, +0.03) and 20/20 (0.31, +0.08) were both on the rise, with 20/20 experiencing the most growth. On Fox, WWE Smackdown (0.76, -0.01) lost a hundredth but remained on top. NBC's Dateline (0.26, -0.01) also lost a tick. The CW re-ran Penn & Teller (0.04) and Sight Unseen (0.04).

The Rookie Renewed by ABC

Officer John Nolan may not be a rookie anymore, but he'll remain on the case for another year. ABC has renewed The Rookie, their veteran police procedural, for a seventh season. The drama series has been a decent live+same-day performer for the network over its run, but is a top performer in digital multiplatform viewing. This year, the show averaged a 0.33 in the L+SD 18-49 demo, a decline from last season, but still enough to keep the show competitive in its hour. The show celebrated its 100th episode this season, and its success in delayed viewing inspired an order for its spinoff, The Rookie: Feds, in 2022. After failing to live up to the success of its parent show, Feds was canceled last year after a single season, but The Rookie remains a valuable asset for the network. Nathan Fillion, Melissa O'Neil, Eric Winter, Jenna Dewan Richard T. Jones and Alyssa Diaz star in the series. This is a correct prediction for The TV Ratings Guide.
