Thursday TV Ratings 6/27/24: Biden/Trump Debate Massively Down from First 2020 Debate as CNN Leads Overall Coverage, Olympic Track & Field Trials Top Non-Debate Programming [+ Analysis]

Ratings Analysis: Former president Donald Trump and current president Joe Biden were up against each other yet again for the first presidential debate of 2024, but the ratings were significantly lower than they were when the two faced off in 2020. 

Since CNN hosted the debate, their coverage led the way in the Adults 18-49 demographic (2.35) and in total viewership (9.53 million). ABC took second (1.56 rating/9.21 million viewers) and beat out the other broadcast networks in both metrics. Fox News (1.04 rating/9.28 million viewers) took third, while Fox (0.95 rating/3.68 million) came in fourth. NBC (0.94 rating/5.39 million) was slightly behind Fox in the key demo but eclipsed them in total viewers. CBS (0.85 rating/5.01 million) settled for sixth place in terms of rating, while MSNBC (0.41/4.12 million) took seventh. NewsMax (0.10 rating/1.28 million) and NewsNation (0.05 rating/0.35 million viewers) were a clear step behind the other networks. CBS (-39%), Fox (-41%), ABC (-51%), and NBC (-65%) were all down dramatically from their coverage of the first 2020 debate in the Adults 18-49 demographic, with NBC taking the most alarming hit of the four.

In terms of debate analysis, CNN (1.72 rating/7.74 million viewers) led the way in Adults 18-49 ratings, but Fox News (1.00/8.71 million viewers) had more total viewers. ABC (1.33 rating/7.24 million) was once more the highest-rated of the broadcast networks. CBS (0.57 rating/3.65 million) and NBC (0.56 rating/3.73 million) were in a virtual dead heat, while MSNBC (0.43 rating/4.72 million) was last in the ratings.

Non-debate programming was scarce. NBC aired the US Olympic Trials (0.53) at 8. ABC aired ABC News: Race for the White House (0.50) as a debate "pre-game" show. Fox took 3rd in the 8 p.m. hour with Copa Tonight (0.43) and followed that with Fox News Democracy '24 (0.33). CBS aired reruns of Young Sheldon (0.27) and Ghosts (0.23). Masters of Illusion (0.05, +0.01) and World's Funniest Animals (0.05, +0.02) were up on the CW.

Wednesday TV Ratings 6/26/24: NBA Draft Rises from 2023, Tepid Start for The Real CSI: Miami, Food Stars Hits New Low [+ Analysis]

Ratings Analysis: The 2024 NBA Draft (0.53) was nearly a full tenth higher than 2023's draft (0.44), thus propelling ABC to the top of the pack in the Adults 18-49 demographic. On CBS, The Real CSI: Miami (0.17) had a tepid debut in the 10 p.m. hour, going below reruns of The Price Is Right at Night (0.31) and Let's Make a Deal Primetime (0.26). On Fox, MasterChef (0.24, -0.06) and Food Stars (0.13, -0.06) completely collapsed, with Food Stars setting a new series low. NBC aired encores of Chicago Med (0.16), Fire (0.20), and PD (0.17). Crime drama Walker (0.07, 0.00) did not rise or fall for its CW series finale.

Tuesday TV Ratings 6/25/24: CMA Fest Barely Down from 2023, Beat Shazam and The Quiz with Balls Drop, Police 24/7 Steady for Finale [+ Analysis]

Ratings Analysis: CMA Fest (0.38) put up a solid rating on ABC and was only 7% below last year's broadcast (0.41) in the key demo. Beat Shazam (0.22, -0.05) and The Quiz with Balls (0.22, -0.03) both dropped on Fox. Police 24/7 (0.07, 0.00) matched last week's installment for its CW finale. On NBC, America's Got Talent (0.45, 0.00) held steady, and Password (0.30, +0.01) ticked up. CBS aired drama repeats (0.28/0.23/0.21).

Monday TV Ratings 6/24/24: Stanley Cup Draws Highest Ratings Since 2019, Name That Tune and The 1% Club Rise [+ Analysis]

Ratings Analysis: The seventh and final game of the Stanley Cup Finals (2.32, +1.21) passed the 2.0 mark and posted a higher rating than the previous six games. On NBC, the track & field portion of the US Olympic Trials (0.51) took second place in the key demo but was two-tenths lower than the Sunday broadcast. Name That Tune (0.23, +0.02) and The 1% Club (0.23, +0.01) inched up on Fox. All American (0.08, 0.00) was flat on the CW. CBS aired reruns (0.23/0.19/0.17/0.15).         

Sunday TV Ratings 6/23/24: Copa America Easily Leads the Night, Olympic Track & Field Trials Rise, Up Low on ABC [+ Analysis]

Ratings Analysis: Fox's broadcast of Copa America (1.12) was the highest-rated program in the Adults 18-49 demographic and led the network to a rare Sunday night victory. On NBC, the gap between the swimming (0.45) and track & field (0.71) portions of the US Olympic Trials widened, while the diving trials (0.25) underwhelmed in the 7 p.m. hour. On ABC, a showing of the 2009 animated film Up (0.21) declined significantly from the repeats of AFHV (0.42/0.36) that aired before it. CBS aired reruns of 60 Minutes (0.27/0.27) and Elsbeth (0.12/0.12). Journey 2: The Mysterious Island (0.05) was passable by CW standards but lost to encores of The Conners (0.06/0.06).

Saturday TV Ratings 6/22/24: Olympic Track & Field Trials Dominate, MLB Slips [+ Analysis]

Ratings Analysis: The track & field portion of the US Olympic Trials (0.57) once more beat out the swimming coverage (0.46), thus lifting NBC to a Saturday-night win in the Adults 18-49 demographic. Fox's MLB: Regional Coverage (0.38, -0.03) settled for a second-place finish and was down slightly from last Saturday. ABC went with reruns of Shark Tank (0.13/0.17/0.16). CBS aired encores of FBI: International (0.09) and 48 Hours (0.17/0.19). Repeats of The Conners (0.03/0.04/0.04/0.04) remained a staple for the CW.

Friday TV Ratings 6/21/24: Stanley Cup Slightly Down, Olympic Trials Jump for Track & Field Trials, WWE SmackDown Climbs [+ Analysis]

Ratings Analysis: In game 6, the Stanley Cup (1.11, -0.02) inched down but still topped the night, giving ABC its second Friday-night victory in a row. WWE Smackdown (0.73, +0.21) soared on Fox, but it had to settle for second place once more. On NBC, the track & field portion of the US Olympic Trials (0.53) sported a higher rating than the swimming portion (0.39) that aired before it. CBS's Lingo (0.19, +0.01) picked up a hundredth and led into repeats of SWAT (0.12) and Blue Bloods (0.14). The Big Bakeover (0.04, +0.02) doubled last week's premiere rating on the CW. Later in the night, Totally Funny Animals (0.05, +0.02) and Totally Funny Kids (0.04, +0.02) were also up.

Ratings Analysis: MLB on Fox (0.48) topped the night in the Adults 18-49 demographic, narrowly fending off the first hour of NBC's US Olympic Trials (0.47/0.44). CBS re-aired Young Sheldon (0.21), Ghosts (0.20), Elsbeth (0.16), and Fire Country (0.15). ABC aired repeats of 9-1-1 (0.20/0.15/0.19). On the CW, Masters of Illusion (0.04) and World's Funniest Animals (0.03) were a step below reruns of The Conners (0.05/0.05).

Repeats of The Price Is Right At Night (0.31) and Let's Make a Deal Primetime (0.27) were lower than they were last week on CBS, but the 10PM Tracker repeat (0.19) was actually slightly higher. ABC went with encores of The Conners (0.22/0.18), Abbott Elementary (0.13), and Shark Tank (0.12). Walker (0.07, +0.01) picked up a hundredth on the CW.

Ratings Analysis: Game 5 of the Stanley Cup Finals (1.13, +0.27) cleared the 1.0 threshold on ABC and jumped to a 2024 high. US Olympic Trials: Swimming (0.43) and US Olympic Trials: Diving (0.45) were both up on NBC. Fox's Beat Shazam (0.27, +0.02) climbed to a new season high, but The Quiz with Balls (0.25, -0.04) cooled down. On the CW, Hostage Rescue (0.04, +0.01) picked up a hundredth for its finale. Police 24/7 (0.07, +0.01) also ticked up. CBS aired repeats of FBI (0.30), FBI: International (0.23), and FBI: Most Wanted (0.21). 

Monday TV Ratings 6/17/24: NBA Finals Rise in Closing Game, Olympic Swimming Trials Decline, Weakest Link Ties Season High for Repeat [+ Analysis]

Ratings Analysis: The fifth and final NBA Finals broadcast (3.65, +0.83) soared on ABC, with the game going eight-tenths above the fourth one (2.82). On NBC, the swimming edition of the US Olympic Trials (0.41, -0.07) declined and led into the diving portion (0.35). Fox's Name That Tune (0.21, +0.03) grew, but The 1% Club (0.22, -0.03) slipped. The CW's All American held even at 0.08. CBS aired more reruns (0.20/0.19/0.18/0.15).

Sunday TV Ratings 6/16/24: Tony Awards Slip from 2023, Olympic Swimming Trials Lead, UFL Soars for Championship [+ Analysis]

Ratings Analysis: The Tony Awards (0.41) performed reasonably well on CBS but were down slightly from last year's ceremony (0.46). On NBC, the US Olympic Trials (0.48) were down from Saturday but topped the night in the Adults 18-49 demographic. Repeat showings of The Wall (0.46) and Weakest Link (0.24) sandwiched the TrialsUFL (0.39, +0.19) soared on Fox, but a TMZ Investigates special (0.09) and Grimsburg rerun (0.05) dropped dramatically from there. On ABC, The Jungle Book (0.20) was a tenth below the America's Funniest Home Videos encore (0.30) that led into it. On the CW, 1998 film Armageddon (0.07) beat the week-ago I Am Legend (0.05).

Saturday TV Ratings 6/15/24: Olympic Swimming Trials Strong, Stanley Cup Down in Game 4 [+ Analysis]

Ratings Analysis: The swimming portion of the US Olympic Trials (0.54) performed very well on NBC but lost to game 4 of the Stanley Cup Finals (0.86, -0.03). Though the Stanley Cup was down slightly from Thursday's game, it held a comfortable lead in the Adults 18-49 demographic and kept ABC on top. MLB on Fox (0.41, -0.10) lost a tenth. CBS aired reruns of FBI: International (0.15) and 48 Hours (0.15/0.19). The CW yet again aired repeats of The Conners (0.06/0.06/0.06/0.07).

This week on the Summer Renew/Cancel, it's a Fox-centric update, as the network continues to roll out its summer programming while the other networks take it easy.

Friday TV Ratings 6/14/24: The Big Bakeover Abysmal, NBA Finals Decline, WWE SmackDown Slides [+ Analysis]

Ratings Analysis: The series premiere of The Big Bakeover (0.02) tanked on the CW and lost to the episode of Totally Funny Animals (0.03) that followed it. Totally Funny Kids (0.02) occupied the 9:30 slot. On ABC, game 4 of the NBA Finals (2.82, -0.38) dropped from game three's rating. In the face of some real competition, Fox's WWE Smackdown (0.52, -0.09) faltered and lost out its position as Friday night champion for one evening. CBS went with a Father's Day edition of the Greatest @Home Videos (0.21) and followed that with more drama reruns (0.13/0.13). Dateline (0.26, -0.01) inched down on NBC.

NBC Pre-Season 2024-25 Renew/Cancel: How Do You Solve a Problem Like NBC Comedy?

The NBC Renew/Cancel is back this week for a special pre-season edition, as I look ahead to the upcoming season to see what fortunes are ahead for all of NBC's scripted shows. Wednesday TV Ratings 6/12/24: Food Stars and MasterChef Sink to New Lows, NBA Finals Also Drop [+ Analysis]

Ratings Analysis: It was a rough night for the Fox network as both MasterChef (0.22, -0.09) and Food Stars (0.14, -0.05) plummeted to new lows. On ABC, game 3 of the NBA Finals (3.20, -0.61) was six-tenths below the second game that aired on Sunday. Walker (0.06, +0.01) ticked up on the CW and led into a repeat of Wild Cards (0.04). CBS had strong encores of The Price Is Right At Night (0.37) and Let's Make a Deal Primetime (0.31), but their Tracker rerun (0.17) was a clear step behind the game shows. NBC aired repeats of Chicago Med (0.21), Fire (0.18), and PD (0.18).

On Fox, Beat Shazam (0.25, +0.06) and The Quiz with Balls (0.29, +0.06) soared to new season highs. ABC aired sports drama film Air (0.26) and a rerun of The $100,000 Pyramid (0.24). CBS re-ran FBI (0.22), FBI: International (0.19), and FBI: Most Wanted (0.19). On the CW, Police 24/7 (0.06, +0.01) picked up a hundredth, but Hostage Rescue (0.03, -0.05) collapsed.

Ratings Analysis: Game 2 of the Stanley Cup Finals (0.95, +0.09) improved on game one's rating and kept ABC on top once more. On NBC, American Ninja Warrior (0.36, +0.06) surged and brought the Weakest Link finale (0.24, +0.04) up with it. Name That Tune (0.18, -0.02) slipped on Fox, but The 1% Club (0.25, +0.02) actually bested last week's premiere rating, making the gap between it and its Tune lead-in even more apparent. All American (0.08, +0.02) was also up on the CW. CBS had its usual Monday rerun lineup of The Neighborhood (0.23/0.22), NCIS (0.19), and NCIS: Hawai'i (0.20).

Sunday TV Ratings 6/9/24: NBA Finals Soar in Game 2, UFL Also Rises, Live from Detroit Concert Low [+ Analysis]

Ratings Analysis: On ABC, game 2 of the NBA Finals (3.81, +0.30) was three-tenths higher than game 1 and led into a post-game broadcast (2.05) that cleared the 2.0 threshold. Earlier in the evening, the alphabet network aired a rerun of Celebrity Family Feud (0.27) and NBA Countdown (0.77). UFL on Fox (0.20) was nearly a tenth higher than last week but remained on the softer side. Live from Detroit: The Concert at Michigan Central (0.13) underwhelmed on NBC and was beaten by the America's Got Talent repeat (0.15) that followed the Password encore (0.13). CBS re-ran 60 Minutes (0.33/0.26) and Elsbeth (0.16/0.15). Will Smith film I Am Legend (0.05) was a few notches below last week's Miss Congeniality (0.08) on the CW.

Ratings Analysis: Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Finals (0.86) was the highest-rated program of the evening and led ABC to Saturday-night victory in the key Adults 18-49 demographic. MLB on Fox (0.51, +0.11) was more than a full tenth higher than it was last week, making for a solid second-place finish. CBS re-ran The Equalizer (0.12) and 48 Hours (0.18/0.16). NBC re-aired American Ninja Warrior (0.12) and Dateline (0.14). The CW aired more repeats of The Conners (0.06/0.06/0.05/0.05).

Friday TV Ratings 6/7/24: Daytime Emmys Rise from 2023 Ceremony, Celebrity Wheel of Fortune Repeat Strong [+ Analysis]

Ratings Analysis: The 51st Annual Daytime Emmy Awards (0.25) were a full tenth higher than the 50th ceremony (0.15) that aired back in December but only managed a 3rd place finish in the 8 p.m. time slot. CBS followed the Emmy Awards with a rerun of Blue Bloods (0.15). Fox's WWE Smackdown (0.61, -0.04) slipped but held onto its position as top-rated program of the night. ABC had another strong Celebrity Wheel of Fortune encore (0.37) and followed that with a solid 20/20 (0.30, -0.01). NBC's Dateline (0.27, +0.03) increased in size and more than doubled the Night Court reruns (0.12/0.12) that led into it. On the CW, 100 Days to Indy (0.03, +0.01) ticked up for its season finale.
