Off Topic - Week 1 (Summer 2016 Season)

Welcome to the first Off Topic thread of the summer season! We just ended up seeing the lowest rating for a renewed in-season show on broadcast last night when The Carmichael Show tied the series finale of Truth Be Told by scoring a 0.4 A18-49 rating. The lowest ratings on broadcast were Aquarius and Welcome to Sweden, but they were in summer.

Dates of Note
1. Home Free premieres on June 16.
2. First Jess's Take Renew/Cancel comparison posts will be on June 27, the day after TV Watch US posts their initial predictions.
3. So You Think You Can Dance will premiere tonight (May 30) on FOX.
4. Mistresses also premieres tonight after The Bachelorette.
5. American Ninja Warrior premieres this Wednesday.
6. America's Got Talent will premiere tomorrow (May 31). Simon Cowell replaces Howard Stern.
7. TVLine is one of the only prediction sites that do reality renew/cancel predictions. Along with the new site TV Predictor that I referred to earlier today.
8. I'm taking a vote on which format I should do for the CW Renew/Cancel Watch next fall. Survey is on a separate post.
9. First Reality Renew/Cancel prediction post will be this Thursday, June 2.

CW Renew/Cancel Watch: 'The Flash' & 'Jane the Virgin' Certain to be Renewed

Hello folks, this is Jessica. This is a preseason prediction post for the CW Renew/Cancel Watch. Yesterday, I did a poll asking for feedback on how to improve on next season. Behold, here are some bits and pieces of the new format for the CW Renew/Cancel Watch.

Renew/Cancel Watch Key

💀     - DSW (Dead Show Walking)/Effectively Canceled
😳     - Certain to be Canceled
😢😢    - Likely to be Canceled
😐😐😐   - Watching
😊😊😊😊  - Likely to be Renewed

😃😃😃😃😃 - Certain to be Renewed

Show  Prediction
The Flash 😃😃😃😃😃
Jane the Virgin 😃😃😃😃😃

Obviously, it's emojis. Like last season, there are five main categories: Certain to be Canceled, Likely to be Canceled, Watching, Likely to be Renewed, and Certain to be Renewed. The DSW or Dead Show Walking emoji designates fall freshman shows that have gotten their episode orders reduced after the premiere. For fall freshman and sophomore shows with an initial 13 episode season order, this designation will also be used if that show gets no backorder. Partial backorders no longer apply to the equation. If a CW show gets a follow up backorder that is less than 9 episodes, it will be treated as a limited series (like iZombie and The 100), and there will be no changes to the prediction. Here's the iZombie rule: if a show gets a partial backorder and a renewal is predicted, it will be predicted as such. Once premiere week rolls around, two more columns will be added to show a show's ratings average and the ratings percentage change year to year for a veteran show. Now, let's get on to the predictions.

On The Flash and Jane the Virgin
Third season shows are special cases where a show is usually predicted as a renewal in advance. In the case of The Flash, if it gets 23 episodes, the show will have 69 episodes at the end of its third season. The guarantee of the syndication gods states that if a show with three full seasons has at least 66 episodes, it will most certainly be renewed for a fourth season.

For woefully-rated Jane the Virgin, the case would be that it might either have its episode order reduced before the premiere like Reign this past season, or it would get 22 episodes to reach the guaranteed number of episodes needed to kick in the automatic fourth season renewal. The main reason why it's certain to be renewed for a fourth season are three words: CBS Studios Production. CBS affirmative action allowed Reign to be renewed for a fourth season despite not hitting the number of episodes (66) that would guarantee the automatic fourth season renewal. Even so, I'm not betting against renewal at this point.

Last season, my preseason predictions, except in the case of Reign aligned closely to the actual predictions of a show, leaving me with a prediction record of 9-2-0. Last season, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend and iZombie were predicted as cancelations all season before being renewed in a mass renewal spree for the ages.

What surprising things could the CW come up with this time around? Let me know in the comments below!

Predict the Ratings for the Season 11 Premiere of America's Got Talent

Season 11 of NBC's hit summer reality series America's Got Talent kicks off tonight. Last season, AGT started off with a 2.6 rating. However, this new season also comes with a new judge, Simon Cowell, which many people have speculated will boost the show's ratings.

Will AGT be able to rise from last year's premiere, or will it follow the current trend of TV ratings and fall even lower? Vote in the poll below!

Person of Interest S5E8 Review

Person of Interest S5E8 Review
As far as I could tell, this episode was basically POI mixed with Greys Anatomy and Prison Break

S5E8 'Reassortment'

The episode starts with Reese following James Ko, an Asian businessman who had recently come to America and visits the hospital because he was feeling sick. Reese doesn't believe the guy is in danger but that changes once Ko dies after being given an immunity shot. After checking on his blood, it is revealed that Ko had contracted Avian Influenza and to make matters worse, the shot he was given contained the flu which when combined with his special Avian flu strain led to the creation of a super flu which would spread across the hospital.

Meanwhile, Fusco goes to Elias to learn more about the tunnel deaths. After telling Elias about the death of Bruce Moran, Elias leads Fusco to Jeff Blackwell, the Samaritan agent who broke into Krupa's house. At the same time, Jeff is doubting his work for Samaritan, so his handler gives him an assignment within the hospital where he must take out two employees who were complaining about the hospital's online system

Leaving Root in the Subway, Harold takes bear to the hospital to help Reese calm down the crowd and assist him in any way possible. Root helps Harold realise that the Avian flu strain Ko had was specifically given to him by Samaritan and the entire outbreak was its doing. Along with the hospital administrator, Harold goes to a storage room to get some Avian flu vaccines but the administrator destroys them, revealing himself to be a Samaritan plant but with the help of Bear, Harold takes him out.

Reese handles crowd control but must also handle Jeff who has attacked one of his targets. Fusco shows up and fights with Jeff but he escapes. Root then shows up with the flu vaccines which the machine helped her to "acquire" from a nearby lab.

In the end, Jeff meets with his handler who reveals to him that his mission was a success despite failing to attack his second target. His handler reveals that Jeff was fine because he was naturally immune to Avian flu and that Samaritan's goal was to scare people into getting health check ups where their biodata would be given to Samaritan who plans to use the data to "sort" the human race.

While all this was happening, Shaw finally escapes her prison and ends up in a prison cell in Johannesburg. With the help of an inmate, Shaw escapes to the outside world to find the gang (and no, this is not another simulation)

I found this episode to be better than the previous one. I found the episode to be rather thrilling. We finally got to see Shaw escape in an epic manner. I was impressed with how they handled Jeff's story. Had the shoe received a season 6, I could see him betray Samaritan and join Team Machine, but for now I'm curious to see where his story goes from here. While I don't believe in the existence of this super flu, it did make for some great storytelling. Lastly, am I the only one who thinks Root looks sexy with glasses?

Monday Ratings: Mistresses Premieres Soft

Here are Monday's fast national ratings.

ABC
The Bachelorette - 1.6
Mistresses - 0.7

CBS
Scorpion (R) - 0.6
Scorpion (R) - 0.7
Person of Interest - 0.8

NBC
NHL Stanley Cup Finals Game 1 - 1.2

FOX
So You Think You Can Dance? - 1.0
Houdini & Doyle - 0.5

CW
Memorial Day (Movie) - 0.2

On ABC, The Bachelorette notched a 1.6, down four tenths from last week's premiere. The season premiere of Mistresses scored a 0.7 A18-49 rating. This was down from last season's 0.9 A18-49 rating for its premiere. Also, Mistresses retained less than half of its lead-in. Your predictions were a little too optimistic.

On FOX, the season premiere of So You Think You Can Dance? notched a 1.0, down three tenths from last season's premiere. Houdini and Doyle dipped a tenth from last week to a 0.5.

On CBS, Person of Interest scored a 0.8 A18-49 rating, down a tenth from previous episode.

Person of Interest S5E7 Review

Person of Interest S5E7 Review
Random fun fact: Scott Adsit, who played Max the POI in this episode also voiced Baymax in Big Hero 6

S5E7 'QSO'

After getting frustrated with the machine about Shaw, the Machine sends Root to a radio station to work as a producer for Max, a conspiracy theorist radio host who has been provided Samaritan's mode of communication by one of his regular callers. While being attacked by Samaritan operatives in the building, Root realises that the Machine sent her to the station to send a message to Shaw. Root leaves Max to John and sends the message to Shaw, letting her know they haven't lost hope. Afterwards, Root and John try to get Max to safety, but he declines since he wants the world to know about Samaritan, which ultimately leads to his demise as he is poisoned by his own assistant who is revealed to be a Samaritan agent.

I don't know why, but I didn't really enjoy this episode. It just wasn't very entertaining and it didn't do much in developing the story except for Fusco quitting the team and the message for Shaw. The only good part of this episode was Root who was just being herself.

CW Renew/Cancel Watch: End of Season Survey

I decided to do a survey on how I should improve on the CW Renew/Cancel Watch. Here it is! :)

Jess's Take: Renew/Cancel Update

Photo: TV Grim Reaper website
Welcome to another installment of Jess's Take. While Summer Renew/Cancel is in full swing, I have noticed that another site has joined in on the renewal and cancelation predictions.

Behold, meet the TV Predictor. This site predicts not only broadcast and reality show fates, but also the fates of cable shows. You can follow TVPredictor on Twitter as the season rolls on.  Here's the website: https://tvpredictor.wordpress.com/

In addition, for the 2016-17 season, we will be comparing with TV Grim Reaper, TV Watch US, TVLine, and TVBTN's Cancel Bear unless there are changes.

Sunday Ratings: NASCAR Wins the Night

Sunday's ratings were pretty interesting. Here are the fast nationals.

ABC
America's Funniest Home Videos (R) - 0.6
Harry Potter & the Chamber of Secrets (Movie) - 0.6

CBS
60 Minutes - 0.6
Undercover Boss (R) - 0.6
Madam Secretary (R) - 0.3
Elementary (R) - 0.3

FOX
NASCAR Sprint Cup - 1.3

NBC
Dateline: On Assignment - 0.4
The Carmichael Show - 0.4
The Carmichael Show (R) - 0.4
American Ninja Warrior Special - 0.9

On FOX, NASCAR clearly won the night, scoring a 1.3 A18-49 rating, on a night where most of the programming on all four broadcast networks went fractional.

On NBC, the season finale of The Carmichael Show went out with a whimper, scoring a 0.4 A18-49 rating. After a repeat, this was followed by a special American Ninja Warrior with a 0.9 A18-49 rating.

Preacher Pilot Review

Preacher Pilot Review
Time to make Jonathan's maybe into a definitely. Starting now I will be the official reviewer of Preacher for The TV Ratings Guide.

S1E1 'Pilot'

I've always been a fan of Seth Rogen but I never took him seriously, even in his serious attempt at acting in the Green Hornet. But this must be the most serious thing he has done. The pilot has a lot of comedic elements but it doesn't stray towards being nonsensical.

Cassidy and Tulip had great introduction stories but I felt Jessie's was a bit boring since all he did was talking, but I felt his story improving after he met Eugene.

Most pilots are usually a bit slow since they are used to set the characters and premise and this pilot feel a bit slow since it was 60 minutes long but it compensated with a lot of action and gore.

While it doesn't fully stay true to the comic (The original story doesn't take place within only one town) but it still remains an enjoyable experience

The Best Episode of The Family

The Best Episode of The Family
Despite having some stylistic similarities to the popular TGIT block, The Family did not attract a large enough audience, and was canceled recently. It then concluded its run two weeks ago. I have prepared this post to celebrate the best episode of The Family, as I have decided that I will create a post about the top however many episodes of each show I watch (even the ones I don't review) when they finish, with the number of episodes I list being somewhat dependent on how many episodes there were of the show. The Family aired 12 episodes, so I picked out 1 that stood out.

"All the Livelong Day" (Season 1, Episode 7)

Written by: Elizabeth Craft & Sarah Fain
Directed by: Paul McGuigan

The Family is a show that has always taken place in many different times, mostly the present and ten years earlier, though sometimes in between. This flashback episode showed some of that time in between, and it was incredibly interesting. It explores life in the bunker, Willa's plan, and Hank's life in prison. All three parts are very well done and interesting. This is where Hank's character started to get very interesting, and he would eventually become the best character on the show, the one you really feel for. Also, this episode marked a transition past the mystery of is this kid Adam, and moved on to get even more interesting.

What was your favorite episode(s) of The Family? Tell me what and why in the comments!

Jess's Take: Is There an Over-saturation of Game Shows?

Jess's Take: Is There an Over-saturation of Game Shows?
Hey folks, this is Jessica. Welcome to the first summer installment of Jess's Take. With the abysmal ratings performance of 500 Questions, it's time for me to investigate the question: is there an over-saturation of game shows? Behold, here's a case where too much of a good thing can be painful.

1. FOX's Low-Rated Game Shows
Last summer, FOX aired Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader?, Boom!, and Bullseye. Officially, there is currently no word on official cancelations, but Boom! and Are You Smarter than a 5th Grader? did so poorly in the ratings that it wasn't even put on this season's summer schedule.

But I'll give these unscripted shows the benefit of the doubt. FOX suffered a ratings collapse and the effects were felt on veteran dance competition show So You Think You Can Dance?. The only success from the FOX lineup was Home Free, which was renewed for a second season via a FOX press release. Home Free returns on June 16, replacing American Grit.

2. 500 Questions' Abysmal Ratings, Plus Fun & Games Sunday on ABC
The 500 Questions season premiere was down from last season. Then ratings plummeted on Friday and Saturday. The most recent installment was at Wicked City level numbers. Is it too soon to call it an over-saturation of primetime quiz shows? Perhaps. But I think that airing the show on Saturday signals that the network doesn't have much faith in the second season show.

ABC is attempting a game show night with Celebrity Family Feud, The $100,000 Pyramid, and Match Game on Sunday, which means that BattleBots is moving to Thursdays, starting June 23. Will this attempt help or hurt ABC's unscripted average? Stay tuned.

Overall, right now, it's way too soon to tell if there is an over-saturation of game shows. I'll come back in July where I'll know for sure.

On NBC, Caught on Camera scored a 0.7 A18-49 rating, followed by two hours of Dateline averaging a 0.9.

Summer Renew/Cancel - May 27: Wayward Pines is Likely to be Renewed
It's week two, with another show premiering this week. Now, we have two shows, with many more coming very soon! Here are my predictions then thoughts.

Format for predictions:
Show title (network) (average adults 18-49 rating, season low-season high)

Certain to be Canceled

Likely to be Canceled
Houdini & Doyle (FOX) (0.7, 0.6-0.7)

Toss-Up

Certain to be Renewed

Zoo (CBS)

Wayward Pines: The second-season series returned to a 0.9 rating. The most difficult thing about predicting Wayward Pines last season is that I had no idea what ratings FOX was looking for. This season, I have a better idea at least. FOX liked the ratings that Wayward Pines got last season. Last season, it started at 1.0, went as high as 1.2, and dropped as low as 0.9. I think that slightly lower will be alright, so a premiere at 0.9 seems fine. However, it could drop in upcoming weeks it dropped in the second half-hour by a surprising amount, and critical response has been less positive. We'll have to wait and see if Wayward Pines remains likely to be renewed.

Mistresses: An incorrect prediction that I was very unsure about, Mistresses returns for a forth season in this upcoming week. I thought it may have chance at renewal because, if it was canceled, ABC would have canceled all four of their summer series. This year, with only two summer series, it wouldn't be as bad for them to cancel both. However, they may find no need to, as Mistresses is getting the lead in of The Bachelorette.

The Night Shift: Another show returns this week, NBC's The Night Shift, which got impressive ratings for summer two years ago and disappointing ratings considering its lead-in last winter following The Voice. However, it has returned, likely due to the power of Sony. It premieres following American Ninja Warrior, and will get the lead in of America's Got Talent later on in the season. These lead ins and Sony make things look good for The Night Shift, but we will have to wait to be sure.
