Sunday TV Ratings 1/30/22: Celebrity Wheel of Fortune and Supermarket Sweep End Down, NFC Championship Up from 2021 AFC Championship (UPDATED)
capture-1-pngcwof1-1

Ratings Analysis: Fox's mammoth 'NFC Championship' (14.20) easily outpaced the 2021 AFC Championship (11.83) and gave 'Next Level Chef' (2.59, +2.13) the boost of a lifetime. On ABC, 'Celebrity Wheel of Fortune' (0.37, -0.06) and 'Supermarket Sweep' (0.34, -0.02) lost some ground for their season finales. A 7PM edition of 'America's Funniest Home Videos' (0.44, -0.07) also declined, but 10PM drama 'The Rookie' (0.33, +0.01) got back a hundredth. CBS had football-inflated editions of '60 Minutes' (0.91/0.57), 'The Equalizer' (0.32), and 'SWAT' (0.30), but the boost mostly wore off by the time the drama reruns arrived. NBC had meager encores of 'The Wall' (0.15), 'Dateline' (0.23), and 'Law & Order: SVU' (0.20). Despite having a horrific 'March' repeat lead-in (0.01), The CW's 'Two Sentence Horror Stories' (0.05/0.07) improved dramatically from the week prior (0.02/0.02).

Finals Update: 'NFC Championship' (+4.7), the 8PM '60 Minutes' (+0.1), and 'Celebrity Wheel of Fortune' (+0.1) adjusted up.

Ratings Analysis: ABC's 'Shark Tank' (0.56, -0.09) and Fox's 'WWE Smackdown' (0.56, -0.08) were both down close to a tenth and tied for the title of "highest-rated broadcast" in the Adults 18-49 demographic. Following 'Shark Tank', '20/20' (0.40, -0.04) dropped by four-hundredths in the 9PM hour. CBS's 'Undercover Boss' (0.33, -0.09) was a tenth shy of its previous episode and settled for 4th place in the 8PM hour. Dramas 'Magnum PI' (0.45, -0.04) and 'Blue Bloods' (0.47, -0.06) also took a hit at 9 and 10 respectively. NBC's 'Dateline' (0.49, +0.08) was the only show of the evening to rise from its last installment. 'Dateline' also built noticeably from the rerun of 'That's My Jam' (0.39) that preceded it. 'Penn & Teller: Fool Us' (0.07, -0.08) and the 'Nancy Drew' finale (0.05, -0.04) collapsed on the CW.

Screen-Shot-2022-01-28-at-12-34-11-AM

Ratings Analysis: Though it aired without the help of its 'Ghosts' lead-in, CBS's 'B Positive' (0.50/0.46) remained on-par with the week prior for an hour-long event. The 9PM episode tied its season high while the 9:30 installment was only four-hundredths below last Thursday's outing. Earlier in the evening, 'Young Sheldon' (0.73, -0.10) lost a tenth as 'United States of Al' (0.54, +0.01) gained a hundredth. A rerun of 'Bull' (0.28) capped off the night. ABC's broadcast of 'Truth & Lies: The Last Gangster' (0.49) was nearly a tenth higher than the week-ago 'Women of the Movement' finale (0.40). A rerun of 'Promised Land' (0.18) that followed was only four-hundredths lower than its Monday premiere (0.22). 'Call Me Kat' (0.26, -0.05) and 'Pivoting' (0.22, -0.04) slipped to new lows on Fox, but 'Joe Millionaire: For Richer or Poorer' (0.33, +0.01) picked up a hundredth. NBC went with repeats of 'The Blacklist' (0.25), Law & Order: SVU' (0.31), and 'Law & Order: Organized Crime' (0.27). The CW's 'Walker' (0.09, -0.05) crashed to a series low and led into a 'Legacies' encore (0.06).

Finals Update: 'B Positive' (+0.1) and 'Call Me Kat' (+0.1) adjusted up.

Lots happening in this episode! Feeling guilty about missing Hazel's first bike ride, Riley decides to take her hunting for a good father/daughter bonding experience.  Unfortunately Hazel is horrified at the idea of killing the cute forest animals so the two have a more memorable experience when Riley teaches Hazel how to drive!

Meanwhile, Al, determined to impress Ariana at an Afghan refugee fund-raiser spin cycle-a-thon, gets down right petulant when he competes against the hunky spin class instructor.

And with the house to themselves, Art and Lois enjoy privacy at home and then out in the city as vigilante anti-graffitists.

With USofAL's audience numbers steadily climbing, the show must be doing something right. But this is an example of the uneven writing that keeps the show from being heads above any other must-see TV.

It's funny and touching to see Riley interact with his daughter, especially when he realizes how much he's missed in his daughter's life - Parker Young and Farrah Mackenzie have great chemistry.

But the show's biggest challenge is how to develop Al as a multi-dimensional comic character. Is he the stranger in a strange land? Are we laughing at his conservative values? It certainly comes across that way with Al's immature bravado competing with the spin instructor. Ariana is too Westernized for Al and she's already condemned him for being an interpreter, but the show insists that they could be a couple even though Ariana shows no interest in Al. Combined with the show's unique situation of being the only show about an Afghan refugee, and you can almost feel the tug of war in the writers' room as they steer Al from serious issues to a memorable funny character that will keep a growing audience coming back every week.

Ratings Analysis: CBS's primetime edition of 'Let's Make a Deal' (0.60) led the evening and went nearly a tenth higher than the last time it aired (0.51) back in early 2021. Despite that, it was a little more than a tenth below the week-ago 'Price Is Right' (0.74), 'The Amazing Race' (0.58, -0.09) was a tenth shy of its last episode, but 'Good Sam' (0.29, +0.01) gained a hundredth at 10. Fox's 'I Can See Your Voice' (0.38) tied what it garnered the Wednesday prior, but 'Next Level Chef' (0.46, -0.01) lost a tick in the 9PM timeslot. NBC's repeats of 'Chicago Med' (0.43), 'Chicago Fire' (0.43), and 'Chicago PD' (0.40) were markedly stronger than ABC's encores of 'The Goldbergs' (0.38), 'The Wonder Years' (0.25), 'The Conners' (0.28), 'Home Economics' (0.20), and 'The Chase' (0.19). In CW news, 'Legends of Tomorrow' (0.11, +0.02) tied its season high and 'Batwoman' (0.10, +0.03) rose to a new one.

Finals Update: 'The Amazing Race' (+0.1), 'Next Level Chef' (+0.1), and the repeat of 'The Wonder Years' (+0.1) adjusted up.

Screen-Shot-2022-01-26-at-2-08-46-AM

Ratings Analysis: Even though 'Judge Steve Harvey' (0.54, -0.10) lost a full tenth in the 8PM hour, ABC's 'Abbott Elementary' (0.58) held steady with its last installment and was the second highest-rated broadcast of the evening. 9:30PM sitcom 'Black-ish' (0.42, +0.02) gained two-hundredths and led into a 'Judge Steve Harvey' rerun (0.26). NBC's 'American Auto' (0.38) was flat with its week-ago episode, but 'Grand Crew' (0.31, -0.02) and 'This Is Us' (0.76, -0.03) dealt with minor declines. 10PM drama 'New Amsterdam' (0.37, +0.02) was up by two-hundredths from its previous telecast. Fox's 'Our Kind of People' (0.33, +0.11) picked up a tenth for its final episode of the season and led out of a rerun of '9-1-1: Lone Star' (0.30). CBS had sturdy repeats of 'FBI' (0.55), 'FBI: International' (0.45), and 'FBI: Most Wanted' (0.44). On the CW, 'Superman & Lois' (0.19, -0.02) and 'Naomi' (0.10, -0.01) ticked down for the second week in a row.

Monday TV Ratings 1/24/22: Promised Land Bombs, The Neighborhood and NCIS Rise, The Cleaning Lady and 9-1-1: Lone Star Up After Week Off (UPDATED)
Promised-Land-1

Ratings Analysis: ABC's 'The Bachelor' (0.77, +0.04) returned to the scene and was once more the highest-rated offering of the evening. In spite of that, new drama 'Promised Land' (0.22) completely bombed on arrival and went below every episode of the already underwhelming 'Queens'. On CBS, 'The Neighborhood' (0.72, +0.11), 'Bob Hearts Abishola' (0.58, +0.09), and 'NCIS' (0.61, +0.07) all made visible gains. Fresh off its post-NFL episode, 'NCIS Hawai'i' (0.47, -1.58) did not appear to benefit much from the exposure and was only about six-hundredths higher than the previous Monday. NBC's 'Kenan' (0.34/0.28) and 'That's My Jam' (0.42, -0.02) each fell short of their week-ago ratings (0.37/0.44). In the 10PM slot, 'Ordinary Joe' (0.21, +0.01) rose by a precious hundredth for its season finale. Fox's '9-1-1: Lone Star' (0.71, +0.06) and 'The Cleaning Lady' (0.53, +0.07) were both on the rise after a week off, with 'Cleaning Lady' climbing to its highest rating yet. The CW had no luck with the series premiere of 'March' (0.05) and '4400' (0.04, -0.02).

Finals Update: 'Bob Hearts Abishola' (+0.1) and 'NCIS: Hawai'i' (+0.1) adjusted up.

CBS has issued renewals to three of its comedies, including its only fall freshman comedy. The supernatural sitcom Ghosts, which premiered in October to solid ratings that have only grown over time, has become the first freshman comedy of the season to secure a renewal. Joining it next season are veteran Monday night sitcoms The Neighborhood and Bob Hearts Abishola, both reliable players, which will return for fifth and fourth seasons, respectively. All three pickups are correct predictions for The TV Ratings Guide.

Sunday TV Ratings 1/23/22: NFL Playoffs Down from Comparative 2021 Game, NCIS: Hawaii Solid in Lead-Out Slot, Celebrity Wheel of Fortune and Supermarket Sweep Drop After Week Off (UPDATED)
1366501313-0

Ratings Analysis: CBS's massive 'Chiefs v. Bills' NFL game (11.37) shed a little less than 4% from the comparative game (11.83) that took place in January 2021 and was the highest-rated broadcast by a longshot. Direct lead-out 'NCIS: Hawai'i' (2.05, +1.64) only retained about 18% of the game but shot up to a series high and outpaced the year-ago 'FBI' (1.98). ABC had a tough time competing with NFL as 'Celebrity Wheel of Fortune' (0.43, -0.19) and 'Supermarket Sweep' (0.36, -0.19) dropped by two-tenths each. 'America's Funniest Home Videos' (0.51, +0.02) actually ticked up at 7 while 'The Rookie' (0.32, -0.08) lost eight-hundredths in the 10PM hour. NBC had football-boosted reruns of 'American Auto' (0.77/0.42), but the NFL power died down by the time animated flick 'The Secret Life of Pets' (0.29) aired. A 10PM encore of 'Dateline' (0.35) was able to build from there. Fox went with repeats of 'The Simpsons' (0.18), 'Bob's Burgers' (0.22), more 'Simpsons' (0.29), 'The Great North' (0.22), more 'Bob's' (0.25), and 'Family Guy' (0.26). 'Legends of the Hidden Temple' (0.05, -0.02) and 'Two Sentence Horror Stories' (0.02, -0.03) suffered noticeable declines on the CW.

Finals Update: 'NFL: Chiefs v. Bills' (+2.6), 'America's Funniest Home Videos' (+0.1), 'Supermarket Sweep' (+0.1), the 7PM repeat of 'American Auto' (+0.1), 'Dateline NBC' (+0.1), and the 9pm rerun of 'Bob's Burgers' (+0.1) adjusted up. 'NCIS: Hawai'i' (-0.1) adjusted down.

220123020804-kristen-wiig-will-forte-snl-1

Ratings Analysis: Fox's '49ers v. Packers' NFL game (9.93) led the network to a rare Saturday victory and went over 40% above CBS's monster 'Patriots v. Bills' game (7.03) from the week prior. CBS had NFL-inflated reruns of 'The Equalizer' (0.73) and 'SWAT' (0.33) that helped '48 Hours' (0.37, +0.10) pick up a tenth at 10. NBC had feeble repeats of 'The Wall' (0.14), 'Dateline' (0.19), and 'SNL Vintage' (0.23). As a result of the reduced lead-in, the original episode of 'Saturday Night Live' (0.92, -0.10) lost a tenth at 11:30PM. ABC had anemic encores of 'Shark Tank' (0.18/0.20) and 'The Rookie' (0.12). The CW's 'World's Funniest Animals' (0.04) tied its week-ago installment and was yet again bested by a repeat of itself (0.05). Reruns of 'Whose Line Is It Anyway?' (0.05/0.07) occupied the 8PM hour.

Finals Update: 'NFL: 49ers v. Packers' (+3.3), '48 Hours' (+0.1), the repeats of 'Whose Line Is It Anyway' (+0.1 each), and 'World's Funniest Animals' (+0.1) adjusted up. Repeats of 'The Wall' (-0.1) and 'Dateline NBC' (-0.1) adjusted down.

Friday TV Ratings 1/21/22: Shark Tank and WWE Smackdown Rise, Undercover Boss and Magnum PI Dip (UPDATED)
393aa-16427651401930-1920

Ratings Analysis: It was a photo-finish in the 8PM hour as ABC's 'Shark Tank' (0.65, +0.05) and Fox's 'WWE Smackdown' (0.64, +0.08) battled it out for the top spot. 'Tank' managed to eek out a victory and was followed by a sinking '20/20' (0.44, -0.10). CBS's 'Undercover Boss' (0.42, -0.12) crashed to a season low at 8 as 'Blue Bloods' (0.53, +0.05) climbed to a season high in the 10PM slot. In-between those two, 'Magnum PI' (0.49, -0.01) lost a hundredth. Airing behind an encore of 'That's My Jam' (0.37), NBC's 'Dateline' (0.41, -0.04) dropped by four-hundredths and remained a bit lower than newsmagazine competitor '20/20'. On the CW, 'Penn & Teller: Fool Us' (0.15, +0.03) and 'Nancy Drew' (0.09, +0.03) grew by three-hundredths apiece.

Finals Update: 'Shark Tank' (+0.1), 'Magnum PI' (+0.1), and 'Penn & Teller: Fool Us' (+0.1) adjusted up.

Ratings Analysis: ABC miniseries 'Women of the Movement' (0.40, -0.05) and docuseries 'Let the World See' (0.31, -0.07) lost some ground for their finales, with each program dropping to its lowest rating on record. Fox's lineup remained just as dismal as the week before as 'Joe Millionaire: For Richer or Poorer' (0.32, -0.03) shed three-hundreds from its previous episode. Sitcoms 'Call Me Kat' (0.31, +0.01) and 'Pivoting' (0.26, +0.03) inched up from their disastrous debuts but did not grow enough to seem meaningfully stronger. CBS got a season high out of 'Young Sheldon' (0.83, +0.10) and minor upticks from 'Ghosts' (0.68, +0.03) & 'B Positive' (0.50, +0.01). 'United States of Al' (0.53) held flat at 8:30, and recently-canceled 'Bull' (0.38, -0.04) forfeited four-hundredths at 10. NBC's 'The Blacklist' (0.41, +0.01) got back a single hundredth as 'Law & Order: SVU' (0.63, -0.04) ticked down and 'Organized Crime' (0.49, -0.06) fell to a new low. The CW's 'Walker' (0.14, +0.03) gained three-hundredths and led into a 'Legacies' rerun (0.06).

Finals Update: 'Women of the Movement' (+0.1) adjusted up.

Ratings Analysis: 'The Goldbergs' (0.58, -0.09), 'The Wonder Years' (0.40, -0.10), and 'The Conners' (0.48, -0.08) were all roughly a tenth lower than the previous week on ABC. 9:30pm sitcom 'Home Economics' (0.35, -0.03) and 10pm game show 'The Chase' (0.31, -0.02) declined by smaller amounts but were also substantially lower than the other three. CBS had a particularly strong evening as 'The Price Is Right At Night' (0.74, +0.13) and 'The Amazing Race' (0.67, +0.18) soared well above their week-ago episodes. Drama 'Good Sam' (0.28, +0.05) also rose a bit but remained dead-last in the 10pm hour. NBC's 'Chicago Med' (0.80, -0.01) and 'Chicago PD' (0.70, -0.03) lost some steam, but 'Chicago Fire' (0.85) held steady with its last installment. 'I Can See Your Voice' (0.38, -0.09) and 'Next Level Chef' (0.47, -0.06) fell by nine-hundredths and six-hundredths respectively on Fox. 'Legends of Tomorrow' (0.09, -0.02) and 'Batwoman' (0.07, -0.01) inched down on the CW.

Finals Update: 'The Goldbergs' (+0.1), 'The Amazing Race' (+0.1), 'The Conners' (+0.1), 'Next Level Chef' (+0.1), and 'Home Economics' (+0.1) adjusted up.

Tuesday TV Ratings 1/18/22: Abbott Elementary, American Auto, Blackish & This Is Us All Drop, Superman and Lois Holds Steady (UPDATED)
160315-0409

Ratings Analysis: After an encouraging uptick that came just a week prior, NBC sitcom 'American Auto' (0.38, -0.12) came crashing back down, even going one-hundredth below its timeslot premiere. 8:30pm comedy 'Grand Crew' (0.33, -0.05) was also on the decline but had the smallest drop of the lineup. Dramas' This Is Us' (0.79, -0.15) and 'New Amsterdam' (0.35, -0.10) lost significant ground at 9pm and 10pm respectively. 'Judge Steve Harvey' (0.64, -0.04), Abbott Elementary' (0.58, -0.03), and 'Black-ish' (0.40, -0.01) all ticked down on ABC, but these drops were far less damaging than the ones on the peacock network. Struggling drama 'Queens' (0.30, +0.04) was the lone program of the night to actually rise from its previous episode. Fox's 'Our Kind of People' (0.22, -0.04) tied its series low for its penultimate episode and lost to the '9-1-1: Lone Star' repeat (0.29) that preceded it. CBS had solid encores of 'FBI' (0.41), 'FBI: International' (0.37), and 'FBI: Most Wanted' (0.37). On the CW front, 'Superman & Lois' (0.21, -0.02) and 'Naomi' (0.11, -0.03) shaved off a few hundredths from their week-ago premieres.

Finals Update: 'Abbott Elementary' (+0.1), 'Black-ish' (+0.1), 'Queens' (+0.1), 'This Is Us' (+0.1), and 'New Amsterdam' (+0.1) adjusted up.

Bull Canceled by CBS

Bull Canceled by CBS
bull-and-marissa-1635482450438

After six seasons on the air, Bull has been put out to pasture. The scandal-plagued CBS legal drama has been canceled by the Tiffany Network, with the final episode to air later this year. The show, based on Dr. Phil's life, was the subject of numerous sexual harassment allegations, including one against star Michael Weatherly by season one recurring performer Eliza Dushku. A different behind-the-scenes incident later led to the ousting of show runner Glenn Gordon Caron and co-star Freddy Rodriguez after the show's fifth season. Bull averaged just a 0.33 in the 18-49 demo this season, making it easily the lowest-rated returning scripted show on CBS this season, rating higher than only freshman series Good Sam. This is a correct prediction for The TV Ratings Guide.

Monday TV Ratings 1/17/22: That’s My Jam and Kenan Inch Up Against Weaker NFL Playoffs, The Neighborhood Rises After Week Off (UPDATED)
Screen-Shot-2022-01-18-at-3-24-07-AM

Ratings Analysis: Back from a week off, CBS's 'The Neighborhood' (0.61, +0.07) rose by seven-hundredths and was the top scripted broadcast of the evening. Dramas 'NCIS' (0.54, +0.07) and 'NCIS: Hawai'i' (0.41, +0.03) also made some gains, but sitcom 'Bob Hearts Abishola' (0.49, -0.02) lost some momentum at 8:30. NBC's 'Kenan' (0.37, +0.02) went two-hundredths higher than the 8pm episode from the week prior and led into a repeat of itself (0.27). At 9, 'That's My Jam' (0.44, +0.03) inched up for the second week in a row, but 'Ordinary Joe' (0.20, -0.03) slipped to a new low at 10. ABC won the night altogether with 'Wild Card Kickoff' (1.23) and a softer 'Cardinals v. Rams' NFL game (2.73). Fox decided not to air originals against the football game, instead supplying reruns of '9-1-1: Lone Star' (0.29) and 'The Cleaning Lady' (0.22). Airing behind a 'Naomi' repeat (0.07), The CW's '4400' (0.06, -0.03) tied its series low

Finals Update: 'NFL: Cardinals v. Rams' (+0.5) and the repeat of 'Kenan' (+0.1) adjusted up.

As always, only scripted programming will be taken into account in this column.

The Cleaning Lady: After the rotten luck Fox had with new dramas in the fall of 2021, the 0.51 rating that 'The Cleaning Lady' posted for its series premiere served as a refreshing change of pace. Though not a massive hit by any means, this was markedly stronger than the starts of dramas 'Our Kind of People' (0.35) and 'The Big Leap' (0.29). A modest 10% dip in week two placed it at a rather serviceable 0.46, still well above even the highest ratings of the fall newbies. On average, 'Cleaning Lady' has retained a respectable 70% of its '9-1-1: Lone Star' lead-in and fell by a smaller amount than 'Lone Star' did during their second night airing together. While these mediocre ratings would place it as a tossup on a network with A and B-caliber freshman, this C-level performance looks like a godsend against Ds and Fs like 'Our Kind of People' and 'Big Leap'. Although unemployment may loom over her if ratings continue to trickle down, 'The Cleaning Lady' should be able to keep her job for another year. Status: LIKELY RENEWAL

Call Me Kat: Though the comedy's current average may seem promising, it's beginning to look like 'Call Me Kat' will have to close up shop. The sophomore sitcom actually started season two on solid footing, posting an NFL-boosted 1.22 rating that was on-par with the post-football delivery of 'The Simpsons'. If that were not encouraging enough, this rating was just 11% lower than its 2021 series debut (1.37). Things took a troubling for 'Kat' and friends when the series crumbled on Thursday night, garnering a horrific series low (0.30) and going nearly 60% behind its timeslot start from the previous year (0.68). Though there's still time for 'Kat' to change its fate, a collapse of this degree indicates that the Mayim Bialik vehicle will not be sticking around. Status: LIKELY CANCEL

Pivoting: This new sitcom will soon be 'Pivoting' to the exit as its ratings are pitiful enough that it currently sits near the bottom of the roster. Even when taking into account the fact that it lost over 50% of 'Call Me Kat' on premiere night, the 0.60 rating it debuted with was still somewhat workable. After that passable launch, it collapsed on Thursday evening and posted a pathetic 0.23 rating in the Adults 18-49 demographic. Fox may not have much going for it in the sitcom department but they certainly will not renew the one with the lowest ratings of the pack. Status: LIKELY CANCEL

9-1-1: Lone Star: This drama began its third season with a strong 0.76 rating and then dropped to a still robust 0.65 for episode two. Although a clear step down from the 0.8-1.0 range it inhabited in season two, 'Lone Star' has proven that it can anchor an hour without the assistance of its parent series '9-1-1'. Since it remains one of the highest-rated programs on the Fox network, a renewal is all but guaranteed for this spinoff series. Status: CERTAIN RENEWAL
