Tuesday TV Ratings 1/30/24: Quantum Leap Sinks to New Low in New Slot, La Brea and Night Court Also Hit Lows, The Floor Rises (UPDATED w/Analysis)

Ratings Analysis: NBC's Quantum Leap (0.18, -0.07) crashed to a new series low after being off the air for 1½ months, while its La Brea lead-in (0.18, -0.02) set a new season low at 9 p.m. Night Court (0.28, -0.05) posted a new series low at 8, but Extended Family (0.23, 0.00) finally stopped its slide at 8:30. Celebrity Name That Tune (0.32, +0.04) and The Floor (0.49, +0.08) surged on Fox, but Tune could only tie ABC's Celebrity Wheel of Fortune repeat (0.32) in the key demo. The alphabet network also aired reruns of Will Trent (0.17) and The Rookie (0.12), but they were no match for CBS's encores of FBI (0.36), FBI: International (0.27), and FBI: Most Wanted (0.29). Inside the NFL (0.06, +0.02) and Whose Line (0.08, +0.03) climbed higher on the CW.

Finals Update: Repeats of FBI (+0.1) and Will Trent (+0.1) adjusted up.

Monday TV Ratings 1/29/24: The Irrational Returns Slightly Down, America’s Most Wanted Also Slips, The Bachelor Rises (UPDATED w/Analysis)

Ratings Analysis: NBC drama The Irrational (0.27, -0.01) was down by just a hundredth in its return from a break that lasted nearly three months and retained a healthy portion of its America's Got Talent: Fantasy League lead-in (0.41, +0.01). On ABC, The Bachelor (0.55, +0.02) built on last week's soft-ish premiere, but the 20/20-based documentary series Bad Romance (0.19, -0.03) got even weaker in week 2. Fox's America's Most Wanted (0.29, -0.01) and TMZ Investigates (0.20, -0.01) each lost a hundredth. Ride (0.06, 0.00) was stable on the CW and led into another rerun of Wild Cards (0.05). CBS re-ran The Neighborhood (0.29), Bob Hearts Abishola (0.24), and Yellowstone (0.19/0.16).

Finals Update: All shows held their preliminary rounded ratings.

Sunday TV Ratings 1/28/24: Next-Level Chef Down from Previous Post-NFC Championship Showing, Lions/49ers Game Up from 2023 Primetime NFL Championship (UPDATED w/Analysis)

Ratings Analysis: The Lions may have lost to the 49ers in the NFC Championship game, but Fox got an enormous 15.18 rating out of it, enough so that they were able to boost the season three premiere of Next Level Chef (2.15) past the 2.0 barrier in the Adults 18-49 demographic. CBS had an NFL-boosted episode of 60 Minutes (0.74, +0.47) and three helpings of Yellowstone (0.36/0.29/0.29). ABC's showing of The Parent Trap (0.18) was a hundredth above last week's Soul (0.17). The film was sandwiched in-between reruns of AFV (0.18) and Abbott Elementary (0.13). The CW had a high-profile film of their own in the form of Robin William's Jumanji (0.06) and washed that down with an encore of The Conners (0.04). NBC aired repeats of America's Got Talent: Fantasy League (0.09) and Dateline (0.16).

Finals Update: NFC Championship (+4.0) and the 8 PM episode of Yellowstone (+0.1) adjusted up. Next-Level Chef (-0.1) adjusted down.

Saturday TV Ratings 1/27/24: SNL Slightly Down, NBA Dominates, Family Film & TV Awards Pitiful (UPDATED w/Analysis)

Ratings Analysis: NBC's Saturday Night Live (0.74, -0.01) was down a hundredth in the Adults 18-49 demographic and fell a few tenths short of ABC's Lakers v. Warriors NBA game (1.01). Fox's Women's College Basketball game (0.12) failed to impress and lost out to the peacock network's reruns of The Wall (0.15), Weakest Link (0.14), and SNL Vintage (0.21). The Family Film & TV Awards (0.09) completely bombed on CBS and seemed to hurt 48 Hours (0.16, -0.02) in the process. The CW had a Concert for Gratitude (0.03) but forgot to send out the invitations.

Finals Update: NBA: Lakers v. Warriors (+0.3) adjusted up. NBA Countdown (-0.1) and the repeat of Weakest Link (-0.1) adjusted down.

FOX Renew/Cancel Week 18: I Can See Your Voice Will Be Muted

 Predictions for 01/27/24

Below are the Week 18 renew/cancel predictions for the Fox network in the 2023-24 television season. The numbers listed in the table mark the Nielsen rating low, average, and high for each respective program in the Adults 18-49 demographic. The "Y2Y (year-to-year) Change" column denotes how much the series has risen or fallen when compared to its average from the previous season. Because of the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, there is a limited amount of scripted programming this winter. As a result, reality television will continue to be included in this column. Now that more scripted programming is set to return soon, scripted and reality will be split into two separate charts.

Scripted

Reality

I Can See Your Voice: I Can See Your Voice has been downgraded in this column and is now Likely to be Canceled. The Ken Jeong reality series began the season with a serviceable 0.31 rating but has since stabilized in the less satisfactory 0.21-0.23 range. The Fox network is currently packed to the brim with reality programming, and there's no way they keep all of these offerings around. I Can See Your Voice is close to the bottom of this roster, getting up there in age, and losing to just about everything that is not TMZ Investigates. Even Celebrity Name That Tune, which spent the fall struggling, is now a solid step above Voice (most recently, Tune managed a 0.28). Fox is full of mediocre performers, and this one isn't even strong enough to be classified as "mediocre". Expect season three to be its final season.

America's Most Wanted: Fox brought back their revival of America's Most Wanted and got a decent 0.30 rating out of it. Considering that this rating is only three-hundredths lower than its finale from April 2021 (0.33), it's safe to say that Most Wanted had a pretty healthy return. This one is Likely to be Renewed, because it feels like the television equivalence of a "legacy act" for the Fox network. The ratings are good enough that it can continue to pop up as filler programming when Fox needs to plug a hole in the schedule, even if it skips a season or two.

TMZ Investigates: TMZ Investigates is the Fox network's attempt at forming a newsmagazine staple, like CBS has with 60 Minutes and NBC has with Dateline. This branding has floated around for a few years with mixed results. Their Tiger King-themed installment posted a whopping 1.0 in 2020, but the Monday premiere managed a meager 0.21. This one is Likely to be Renewed not because of any prowess in the ratings department, but more so because Fox will want to keep the branding around for when a major event hits. If there's a topic being covered that viewers are truly interested in, these type of shows tend to skyrocket even if they otherwise struggle. Much like America's Most Wanted, this will probably skip a season or two but won't disappear altogether.

The Great North: The co-creator of The Great North has made it official that their team is already working on season 5, meaning that the animated series is effectively Renewed for another season. This serves as an incorrect prediction for this column. Since Fox has publicly renewed all their cartoons aside from North and has treated this show like a midseason afterthought, it felt safe to assume that cancellation was in the cards. Regardless, it appears that the network is interested in staying in business with the Tobins and keeping their animated library large.

Tuesday Cable Ratings 1/23/24: Fox News Leads New Hampshire Primary Coverage, NBA Leads, Good Trouble Ties Series Low

Friday TV Ratings 1/26/24: US Figure Skating Championships Rise Year-to-Year, WWE SmackDown Also Up, Shark Tank Slips (UPDATED w/Analysis)

Ratings Analysis: The 2024 US Figure Skating Championships (0.23) grew slightly in the Adults 18-49 demographic when compared to 2023's showing (0.20), but it only managed to provide NBC with a distant third-place finish in the 8 p.m. time slot. ABC's Shark Tank (0.43, -0.05) slipped a bit, but 20/20 (0.42, +0.06) picked up the slack in a big way for an episode that featured an interview with Gypsy Rose. WWE Smackdown (0.71, +0.09) nearly gained a full tenth on Fox and was Friday's top broadcast yet again. CBS re-ran S.W.A.T. (0.10), Fire Country (0.12), and Blue Bloods (0.16), and each rerun built on the previous one. Masters of Illusion (0.05, 0.00) held flat on the CW, but Penn & Teller (0.06, -0.01) and World's Funniest Animals (0.04, -0.01) dipped.

Finals Update: WWE SmackDown (+0.1) and the repeat of Blue Bloods (+0.1) adjusted up.

Thursday TV Ratings 1/25/24: Hell’s Kitchen Drops for Finale, Law & Order Shows and Press Your Luck Also Decline (UPDATED w/Analysis)

Ratings Analysis: Fox's Hell's Kitchen (0.38, -0.03) shed a few ticks on finale night but was still higher than about half of the episodes that aired this season. Press Your Luck (0.38, -0.05) also slipped on ABC and got into a three-way tie in the 8 p.m. timeslot with Hell's and NBC's Law & Order (0.38, -0.10). The latter lost a full tenth in week 2, and the decline was even worse for SVU (0.50, -0.12). Organized Crime (0.39, -0.07) bled a little less in the 10 p.m. hour. CBS stayed out of the original business once more, opting to air reruns of Young Sheldon (0.28), Ghosts (0.21), So Help Me Todd (0.18), and SEAL Team (0.17). Son of a Critch (0.05, +0.01) and Children Ruin Everything (0.04, +0.02) rose on the CW, as did encores of The Conners (0.05/0.05).

Finals Update: Hell's Kitchen (+0.1) and Press Your Luck (+0.1adjusted up.

Wednesday TV Ratings 1/24/24: One Chicago Lineup Slides in Week Two, We Are Family Also Drops, Wild Cards Doubles (UPDATED w/Analysis)

Ratings Analysis: NBC dramas Chicago Med (0.56, -0.05), Chicago Fire (0.56, -0.07), and Chicago P.D. (0.53, -0.04) all slipped in week two, but the drops were far from alarming as these three remained the top three of the night in the Adults 18-49 demographic. Over on Fox, We Are Family (0.22, -0.07) gave back any boost it might have taken away from its post-NFL showing and fell behind its I Can See Your Voice lead-in (0.23, +0.02). The Price Is Right At Night (0.52, +0.08) surged on CBS, and Let's Make a Deal Primetime (0.39) proved to be a worthy retainer in the 9 p.m. hour, but FBI True (0.18) was still dead weight at 10. ABC's broadcast of the Suns v. Mavericks NBA game (0.39) was more than a tenth lower than last week's game (0.52). Crime drama Wild Cards (0.08, +0.04) doubled last week's premiere rating on the CW, and Family Law (0.05, +0.02) grew along with it.

Finals Update: NBA: Suns v. Mavericks (+0.1), Let's Make a Deal Primetime (+0.1), Chicago Fire (+0.1), and Chicago Med (+0.1) adjusted up.

Tuesday TV Ratings 1/23/24: Celebrity Jeopardy Drops for Finale, NCIS: Sydney Ends Steady, Extended Family Hits New Low, La Brea Rises (UPDATED w/Analysis)

Ratings Analysis: ABC's Celebrity Jeopardy! (0.45, -0.12) lost some ground on finale night but was still the highest-rated program of the evening. In the 9 p.m. hour, Only Murders in the Building (0.20) closed out its broadcast run and led into a repeat of The Rookie (0.12). Over on CBS, NCIS: Sydney (0.35, 0.00) held steady for its season finale and was followed by reruns of FBI (0.25) and FBI: Most Wanted (0.22). Night Court (0.33, -0.04) and Extended Family (0.23, -0.03) slipped to new lows on NBC, with the latter now having declined for four-straight episodes. At 9, LA Brea (0.20, +0.01) picked up a hundredth but was only a bit stronger than the 10 p.m. Found rerun (0.19). Celebrity Name That Tune (0.28, -0.01) lost a hundredth on Fox, while The Floor (0.41, -0.10) lost a full tenth. Despite the decline, The Floor did not set a new low and instead tied its premiere rating from early January. In CW land, Inside the NFL (0.04, -0.01) shed a hundredth, while Whose Line (0.05, +0.01) gained one.

Finals Update: All shows held their preliminary rounded ratings.

Monday TV Ratings 1/22/24: The Bachelor Returns with Lowest Premiere Yet, America’s Most Wanted OK, The Traitors Preview Low (UPDATED w/Analysis)

Ratings Analysis: ABC's The Bachelor (0.53) was a little weaker than usual in its return, declining about 18% from its January 2023 premiere (0.65) in the Adults 18-49 demographic. Regardless, even a worn-out Bachelor was strong enough to top all other competitors in the key demo. In the 10 p.m. time slot, a special edition of 20/20 (0.22) barely retained more than 40% of its lead-in. On NBC, America's Got Talent: Fantasy League (0.40, +0.09) was completely unfazed by the return of The Bachelor and instead soared to a new series high. Peacock drama The Traitors (0.17) made its NBC debut right after Fantasy League, though few tuned in to witness it. America's Most Wanted (0.30) got off to a passable start on Fox, but TMZ Investigates (0.21) lagged behind it in the 9 p.m. hour. CBS went with reruns of The Neighborhood (0.35), Bob Hearts Abishola (0.28), and Yellowstone (0.21/0.15). The CW began airing repeats of canceled Hallmark series Ride (0.06) and threw in another Wild Cards encore (0.04).

Finals Update: All shows held their preliminary rounded ratings.

Sunday TV Ratings 1/21/24: Massive Chiefs/Bills NFL Playoffs Game Out-Rates 2023 Primetime Divisional Playoff Game, Soul Weak on ABC (UPDATED w/Analysis)

Ratings Analysis: The Chiefs v. Bills NFL game put up a mammoth 13.22 rating in the Adults 18-49 demographic and cleared the 50-million mark in total viewership on CBS, leading the network to an effortless Sunday-night victory. Unfortunately, that enormous lead-in was wasted on a 10 o'clock encore of Fire Country (1.79) when it could have been used on an original broadcast. On ABC, Pixar film Soul (0.17) was a hundredth lower than the week-ago Lion King (0.18) but also had a smaller lead-in than that one did (the 8 p.m. AFV rerun managed a 0.24 this week instead of a 0.30 like last week). NBC aired repeats of Deal or No Deal Island (0.53), Extended Family (0.35), Dateline NBC (0.27), and Law & Order: SVU (0.20). Fox re-ran The Simpsons (0.13), Krapopolis (0.10), Bob's Burgers (0.09), and Grimsburg (0.11). Bob's looked shockingly weak in this lineup but was slightly stronger in its 7:30 showing (0.10). The CW taught us How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days (0.05) and washed that down with another Conners repeat (0.03).

Finals Update: NFL: Chiefs v. Bills (+3.3) and the repeat of Fire Country (+0.4) adjusted up. The repeat of Deal or No Deal Island (-0.1) adjusted down.

Saturday TV Ratings 1/20/24: Packers/49ers NFL Playoff Game Dominates, Will Trent Hits Series High for Repeat, SNL Ratings to Come (UPDATED w/Analysis)

Ratings Analysis: The Packers v. 49ers NFL game was a monster hit for Fox, scoring a 9.84 rating in the Adults 18-49 demographic and nabbing 37.54 million total viewers altogether. ABC went with a mini-marathon of Will Trent (0.46/0.27/0.17), and the 8 p.m. repeat took away enough football boost to beat every original episode of the series. NBC aired a rerun of America's Got Talent: Fantasy League (0.14) and SNL Vintage (0.19). 48 Hours (0.18, +0.02) picked up the pace on CBS, even as encores of So Help Me Todd (0.09) and Fire Country (0.10) underwhelmed. The CW re-ran Wild Cards (0.02) and Family Law (0.02).

Finals Update: NFL: Packers v. 49ers (+3.2) and the repeats of Will Trent at 8 PM (+0.1) and 9 PM (+0.1) adjusted up. The repeat of America's Got Talent: Fantasy League (-0.1) adjusted down.

FOX Renew/Cancel Week 17: We Are Family Will Return To The Cookout

Predictions for 01/20/24

Below are the Week 17 renew/cancel predictions for the Fox network in the 2023-24 television season.

We Are Family: Fox gave We Are Family one of their largest NFL lead-ins of the season and boosted it all the way to a 1.17 rating on Sunday, January 14th. Though its retention was abysmal, this data point alone was enough to catapult it to the #4 position in the chart. And while a lot of shows don't take away any long-term benefit from airing after a football game, it appears that the Anthony Anderson game show actually did. The series returned to its Wednesday time slot with a 0.29 rating, up by eight-hundredths from the 0.21 it managed the week before. This climb took place even as I Can See Your Voice (0.21) declined an hour before it. As a result of the rise here, We Are Family remains Likely to be Renewed. Fox clearly wants the series to thrive, especially since they gave it such a massive leg-up, and it seems like their efforts have ultimately paid off. Expect this Family to stick around for at least another generation.

The Floor: After being in the Likely Renewal category for two weeks, The Floor has now been upgraded to a Certain Renewal. The series started out with a solid 0.41 for its premiere, inched up to a 0.44 in week two, and jumped all the way to a 0.51 rating for its latest episode. This type of growth is unprecedented for any program, let alone a game show that is largely seen as "winter filler" to Nielsen rating followers. This series has now tied the Adults 18-49 ratings average of The Masked Singer and is only a few ticks away from We Are Family despite not having a massive post-NFL showing to inflate its overall average. The Floor is doing far better than what the scripted programming on this network usually does, so a second season renewal should be a given. Though this series probably won't keep growing at such a rapid rate each week, it would still be one of the network's strongest offerings if it stabilized at this level. It's not often that a genuine hit like this lands on Fox's doorstep, so they would be foolish to let go of this one.

Friday TV Ratings 1/19/24: Shark Tank Hits Another Season High, 20/20 Also Rises, WWE SmackDown and Transplant Drop (UPDATED w/Analysis)

Ratings Analysis: ABC's Shark Tank (0.48, +0.03) set another season high on Friday night, besting the one it posted last week. 20/20 (0.36, +0.04) grew alongside its lead-in and trumped a sinking edition of NBC's Dateline (0.27, -0.07). The peacock network was also down earlier in the night with Transplant (0.17, -0.03). Fox's WWE Smackdown (0.62, -0.02) slipped but remained dominant. CBS aired more repeats of S.W.A.T. (0.22), Fire Country (0.20), and Blue Bloods (0.18). Over on the CW, Penn & Teller (0.07, +0.01) was slightly up, World's Funniest Animals (0.05, -0.01) was slightly down, and Masters of Illusion (0.05, 0.00) was stable in the middle.

Finals Update: 20/20 (+0.1) and Dateline NBC (+0.1) adjusted up.

Law & Order (0.48) and Law & Order: Organized Crime (0.46) were way down from their Sept. 2022 premieres (0.60/0.62) but a good bit above their May 2023 finales (0.34/0.41). SVU (0.62) was a lot healthier in the middle, down just seven-hundredths from Sept. 2022 (0.69) and almost two-tenths above its May 2023 closer (0.44). On ABC, Press Your Luck (0.43, +0.04) hit another season high after  setting one just last week and was followed by repeats of itself (0.31/0.23). Hell's Kitchen (0.41, 0.00) held flat on Fox, while Gordon Ramsay's Road Trip (0.18, +0.02) got a little less ugly in week two. CBS re-ran Young Sheldon (0.20), Ghosts (0.14), and SEAL Team (0.13/0.12). Son of a Critch (0.04) was stable on the CW, but repeats of The Conners (0.03/0.03) and Children Ruin Everything (0.02) were down.

Finals Update: Law & Order: Organized Crime (+0.1) adjusted up.

Luckily, this week will see both return, with ratings for the Chicago shows already in. Keep reading to see how likely these shows are to return.

Wednesday TV Ratings 1/17/24: Chicago Med, Chicago Fire and Chicago PD Return Up from Finales, We Are Family Rises from Last Wednesday (UPDATED w/Analysis)

Ratings Analysis: It was a very successful premiere night on NBC as Chicago Med (0.61), Chicago Fire (0.63), and Chicago P.D. (0.57) all returned well above their May 2023 finales (0.44/0.49/0.45) and were the top three programs of the night. ABC was close behind with their Mavericks v. Lakers NBA game (0.52) but settled for a respectable second-place finish in the Adults 18-49 demographic. I Can See Your Voice (0.21, -0.01) ticked down on Fox, but We Are Family (0.29, -0.88) was actually eight-hundredths higher than last week (0.21). It was, however, well below Sunday's NFL-boosted episode for obvious reasons. The Price Is Right At Night (0.44, 0.00) held steady on CBS, while Raid the Cage (0.35, +0.02) grew to a new series high. The series premiere of Wild Cards (0.04) disappointed on the CW but was at least a step ahead of the return of Family Law (0.03).

Finals Update: NBA: Mavericks v. Lakers (+0.1) adjusted up.
