Sunday TV Ratings 3/7/21: Oprah with Meghan and Harry Draws Massive Ratings, Good Girls Premiere Grows from Game of Games, Critics Choice Awards Low, American Idol Slips (UPDATED)

Preliminary Analysis: Although America severed ties with Britain in 1776, it's clear that viewers in the United States are still interested with their affairs. Hosted by Oprah Winfrey, the Prince Harry and Meghan Markle interview scored a mammoth 2.6 rating in the A18-49 demographic, with a staggering 17.1 million total viewers. This broadcast completely trampled the week-ago 'Golden Globes' telecast (1.52) and handily beat out every other program the evening had to offer. CBS ended up wasting that monstrous performance by airing a repeat of 'The Equalizer' (0.7) directly after it. In the 7pm hour, '60 Minutes' (0.8) seemed to benefit from having a stronger lead-out, the newsmagazine series rose by two-tenths on a week-to-week basis.

ABC seemed rather shaken by the colossal ratings of its neighboring network as 'America's Funniest Home Videos' (0.6) and 'American Idol' (0.8) each lost two-tenths. 'Who Wants to be a Millionaire' (0.4) also shed two-tenths for a random 10pm episode. Before this, 'Millionaire' had not aired a new installment since January. Airing after a rerun of 'The Voice' (0.3), NBC's 'Ellen's Game of Games' (0.3) crashed to a series low for its inaugural Sunday episode. Thankfully, the season four premiere of 'Good Girls' (0.4) was able to pick up the slack in the 10pm hour, matching what it garnered for its 2020 debut (0.4). Fox had a fairly decent night as 'Cherries Wild' (0.3), 'Bless the Harts' (0.3), and 'The Simpsons' (0.4) all tied their previous installments. Later on, 'The Great North' (0.4) and 'Bob's Burgers' (0.5) were actually able to rise a tenth, but 'Family Guy' (0.4) remained frozen at its low. On the CW, there was virtually no interest in the 'Critics Choice Awards' (0.1), the ceremony ticked down from last year's showing (0.2).

Finals Update: 'Oprah with Meghan and Harry' (+0.1), 'America's Funniest Home Videos' (+0.1), and 'The Simpsons' (+0.1) adjusted up.
