Put Me In Season 3 Episode 5: The New Pitch

CARTER is sitting on the dugout bench next to RAY. The game is about to begin.

RAY
You ready?

CARTER
As ready as I’ll be. I think my new pitch is gonna surprise everyone.

RAY
It involves the ball crossing the plate and me catching it, right?

CARTER
Eh. You’ll see.

RAY
Carter, stick to your fastball.

CARTER
People are catching onto me. I need to change things up.

RAY
Oh dear God. I think I know how to catch a changeup.

CARTER
Huh?

RAY
You’re making a pun by saying change things up. I’m onto you.

CARTER
Oh no, my new pitch is much different from a changeup.

RAY
Well, let’s see it.

CARTER walks to the mound to start the game. RAY walks behind the catchers’ box. CARTER throws a pitch into the dirt. The batter swings and misses. RAY walks up to the mound.

RAY
Your new pitch is a dirt ball?

CARTER
Did it work or did it work.

RAY
It worked one time.

RAY walks back to the catchers’ box. CARTER throws another ball in the dirt. The batter swings and misses again.

CARTER strikes out every batter for six straight innings. LEWIS takes him out of the game to make room for the relievers.

LEWIS
Terrible pitching today, Carter. You got very lucky. Good think Ray is a great catcher!

CARTER
Are you kidding me? I came up with that pitch by myself! And it worked!

LEWIS
We’re playing the worst team and they have none of their starters playing today. It’s spring training, and they didn’t even try to play today.

CARTER
Oh.

LEWIS
Yeah. Oh.

CARTER
So you think I pitched bad?

LEWIS
I know you pitched bad. Get some rest.

CARTER leaves.

RAY
Lewis, I think you’re being a little harsh on him. Whatever works.

LEWIS
You can only throw a dirt ball so many times.

RAY
I thought so too, but he got everyone out and our bullpen just gave up a home run.

LEWIS looks alarmed. He runs to the mound and tells the pitcher to throw the ball into the dirt. The relievers do this for the rest of the game and strike everyone out.

LEWIS
There’s no way the other team tried, right?

RAY
Tough to say. But I’ll take a win.
