Cable Renew/Cancel - Freeform, TNT & Syfy: Resident Alien is an Out-of-this-World Hit

Resident-Alien-Season-2

It's been nearly six months since my last Renew/Cancel for Freeform, TNT and Syfy, and they've been a bit busy in those months. Keep reading for my predictions for a slew of cable originals including Resident Alien, Single Drunk Female and Snowpiercer!

Single Drunk Female: The latest show to debut on Freeform certainly didn't do anything to reignite the declining cable network. Its 0.08 debut, followed by a 0.06 for the second half of its hour-long debut, shows it won't be Freeform's savior. However, the show is not doomed. Its 0.07 average is a bit higher than Good Trouble and Motherland: Fort Salem, which are both renewed, and only slightly lower than Grown-ish, which is one of the top shows on Freeform. 20th TV, owned by Freeform's parent company, Disney, produces Single Drunk Female, which should boost its renewal odds. Also helping it is that it seems to be doing well on Hulu, ranking as one of the most popular TV titles on the streamer in the days after it airs. With ratings so middling, it isn't guaranteed to return, but as of now, it's more likely than not. It LEANS RENEWAL.

Snowpiercer: After some huge drops in season one and even early in season two, Snowpiercer has come to be a very reliable performer for TNT. The entire second half of its second season was in the 0.2 range, and it returned rock steady for season three. At 0.22, it's doing far better for TNT than the final season of the once-dominant Claws, and is so far an improvement on the already-renewed Animal Kingdom. Combining the strong and steady ratings with the show's big international Netflix deal, and I see no reason to anticipate anything but a fourth season for this show, even if TNT does appear to be moving away from scripted. It's a CERTAIN RENEWAL.

Resident Alien: Somehow, some way, Syfy has managed to find a hit show. It was strong in its first season, standing out as a rare show on Spotify to pull in strong ratings. It appears to have continued that into season two, tying its season high in its Syfy premiere. With large streaming numbers and heavy interest in the show all around (it has a big 18.4 audience demand score on Parrot Analytics, putting it on par with broadcast hits like Ghosts), it's a no-brainer renewal for a network that has struggled to find traction. It's a CERTAIN RENEWAL.

Astrid & Lilly Save the World: It's hard to really judge a show's longevity after only a single episode, but this show truly does not seem to have much, if any, gas in its tank. Airing after a series high outing of Resident Alien, Astrid & Lilly got off to a very weak start, retaining about 25% of its lead-in with just a 0.06 in the key demo. That wouldn't be so horrific for a Syfy show on some other night (it still wouldn't be good), but it's very bad when airing after their top show. By airing it behind Resident Alien and not throwing it to the wolves on some other night, Syfy at least seemed to indicate that they were giving it a fair chance. That doesn't seem to be working out so well, but they tried. I wouldn't put it past them to try again with the show, but there's not much to indicate a renewal here. Not so far, at least. It LEANS CANCELLATION.

Since our last update, Syfy was quite busy with cancellations: the entire TZGZ lineup got the chop. I hadn't anticipated that, only predicting a cancellation for half of them. They also canled SurrealEstate very quickly, before I could predict anything for it.
