Crazy Ex-Girlfriend Season 2 Premiere Review

So much happened in West Covina over the course of 18 episodes. I can't wait to see what all happens in season 2 of Crazy Ex-Girlfriend!

S2E1 "Where Is Josh's Friend?"

The episode picks up shortly after where the last season left off. Rebecca turns around what she said before, telling Josh he's the crazy one. This is a very typical Rebecca move. Paula no longer believes in Rebecca and Josh, which is very odd. This leads to "Love Kernels" (thoughts below).

Rebecca goes crazy with Josh's drawer, which is really funny. After Josh has a really funny dream about Greg, Rebecca searches for Greg to talk to him. This leads to many hilarious interactions, and a hilarious phone call with Greg's mom. One of these interactions, my favorite one, is with Heather.

Josh's story of growing up continues. Rebecca is hilarious in getting Paula to find Greg. I thought that a line about how "everything is on East Cameron" was really funny, since every location mentioned in the show really is. Rebecca and Paula observe Greg's AA meeting, and it is really a great moment for his character. Rebecca also has some great comments while watching.

Paula has a great realization that Rebecca is her drug. Rebecca has a hilarious idea of how to tell Greg but not tell Greg about her and Josh. Paula and Rebecca have a great moment that's both funny and serious, and I loved the moment so much. I love it when the show gets deep into the minor characters as well, specifically Greg and Paula.

"We Should Definitely Not Have Sex Right Now" (which I have thoughts on below) starts off the final act of the episode. Then, we see the rest of the characters of the episode: Darryl and white Josh looking at things on a laptop, Greg drinking a lot of soda, and Paula looking at law school. I'm excited to see these characters' journeys this season.

And now for my thoughts on the episode's songs...

I'm Just a Girl in Love (Season 2 Theme): To be honest, I don't like it as much as last season's. It's still plenty fun, but I liked last season's so much, while this season's seems more weird, and not in that good of a way. Last season's explained Rebecca's story, and fit in to the episodes in a funny way. This season's doesn't have that.

Love Kernels: The abstract symbolism that filled this song was very typical of this show, and that was great. However, it lacked the power that most of last season's songs had. It was sort of funny, but very soft.

We Should Definitely Not Have Sex Right Now: This was a really funny song, and weird in a good way. It also handled Rebecca and Josh's attempt to resist their impulses very well.

Although I wasn't a big fan of the first act of the episode, it got a lot better after that, and really kicked off the season's stories well, "Love Kernels" was an alright song, while "We Should Definitely Not Have Sex Right Now" was great. Overall, a really good episode.

Score: 8.5/10
