Put Me In Season 1 Episode 3: Prove Yourself (A TV Ratings Guide Original)

PREVIOUSLY ON PUT ME IN
LEWIS
I say you walk a few steps out of the dugout and tip your cap to the crowd. They’ll love it.

CARTER does just that. The crowd cheers and chants his name.

RAY
You’re on your way to stardom.

CARTER arrives to the ballpark and enters the Charleston Capitols’ locker room.

LEWIS
You ready for your second outing, kid?

CARTER
I think so.

LEWIS
Good. Try to get through six innings, after that I can call up our bullpen and they’ll take it from there.

RAY
What pitches are you throwing me today?

CARTER
I haven’t really thought about it.

RAY
Think about it then. Remember the hand signals. We switch them up every now and then too.

CARTER
Anything I should know about this team we’re playing?

RAY
They’re really good. Got this one guy who gets on base almost every time when the person who’s pitching can’t throw a strike.

CARTER chuckles.

CARTER
I just hope I don’t mess up.

RAY
Hey, you’re lucky to have your first two starts being home games. You have the crowd on your side as long as you give them what they want.

CARTER
What is it that they want?

RAY
A win and to never be losing. We should get out there soon, it’s almost game time.

The team walks to the dugout. CARTER meets JAMES, the right fielder.

JAMES
Carter! Good luck! Hard to believe you were staring at my back at the beginning of the season, now my look will be yours.

CARTER
Uh huh.

CARTER walks up to the mound. The crowd cheers. CARTER throws the first pitch. It hits the batter, sending him to first base.

CARTER takes a deep breath and throws the second pitch. It’s a hit to the outfield. RAY walks up to the mound.

RAY
What are you doing?

CARTER
These guys are really good.

RAY
You’re supposed to be too. Come up, strike this guy out.

CARTER strikes out the next batter, and gets through the next five innings successfully.

LEWIS (to CARTER in the dugout)
Good job. Get through this next one and you’re all set for today’s game.

JAMES
You’ve made my job really easy so far. I haven’t even had to rob any home runs yet!

BEN (the second baseman)
Of the times you tried, how many exactly have you robbed?

JAMES
Not too many.

BEN
Thought so.

LEWIS
Alright guys, time for the sixth inning. Carter, show them what you got one more time.

CARTER walks up to the mound to start the sixth inning. He immediately gives up a home run, followed by a hit and another home run. The game is now tied. LEWIS walks up to the pitchers’ mound.

LEWIS
I gotta take the ball from you.

CARTER
I’m so sorry.

LEWIS
Nothing to be sorry about if you can’t fix it.

CARTER gives LEWIS the ball and walks back to the dugout. The crowd watches silently. LEWIS meets him in the dugout.

LEWIS
Carter, you failed me this inning.

CARTER
I don’t know what to say, I was throwing the same pitches as always.

LEWIS
You have to switch them up every now and then or else you get too predictable.

CARTER
But I don’t have any other pitches.

LEWIS
Make some. I want to see more versatility in your next start, got it?

CARTER
Got it.

CARTER watches the rest of the game from the dugout. The Charleston Capitols lose by one run.

CARTER
This loss is all my fault.

RAY
Not all your fault. You did contribute to it though.

CARTER
I know I can do better.

RAY
Prove it. Coach doesn’t like it when someone finishes a start poorly, then goes out and does the same thing the next time. Next game is big for you.

CARTER
I’ll do better next time.
