(P) = premiere

After being swallowed whole by the cancellation bear, ABC's 'The Last Man on Earth' (1.8) demolished the competition for its 5th season premiere. This goes well above the 0.7 18-49 rating it posted for its fourth season finale over 11 years ago. In comparison, 'The Middle' reboot (1.2) settled at more modest levels but 'Allen Gregory' (1.6) picked up the slack at 9. Unfortunately, the good news stopped with the comedies as the 'Scandal' reboot (0.4) arrived in disaster territory out the gate.

Fox's reboot of ABC's 'Work It' (1.6) rose a tenth from the last time it aired on television (nearly 20 years ago!) but 'Bordertown' (0.9), 'Son of Zorn' (0.7), and especially 'Trophy Wife' (0.5) premiered at far weaker levels.

NBC was no match for the competition at 8 as the season 3 'Galavant' premiere (0.6) drew very little interest. The peacock network had stronger showings for the 1-hour premieres of 'Cooper Barrett' (1.1) and 'Sunnyside' (1.0).

CBS had a tepid night with only 'Mysteries of Laura' (1.1) garnering decent numbers. The premieres of 'Grey's Anatomy' (0.6) and 'NCIS' (0.5) completely underwhelmed.

The CW housed the 11th season premiere of 'Roseanne' (0.7). While it was well below the 5.2 it posted for its 10th season premiere, it was still much stronger than anything else the CW has aired in recent memory. It led into the return of 'The Resident' (0.0). The Amy Holden Jones medical drama has now become the first broadcast show to post that number for an original episode.
