Put Me In Season 2 Episode 3: Starting Pitchers

PREVIOUSLY ON PUT ME IN

CARTER goes to the stands. Five reporters run over to him.

REPORTER #1
Carter, how did it feel to play today?

REPORTER #2
Carter, what was it like to play today?

REPORTER #3
Carter, can you describe what you thought of playing today?

REPORTER #4
Carter, how would you say you played today?

REPORTER #5
Carter, how did you feel playing today?

CARTER
Well that’s all the same question, so I’m going to answer them all by saying I felt good, played good, happy with my performance and hope we win!

More reporters from the media run up to CARTER. He gives similar answers to similar questions. When he is done, he walks back to the dugout. He is met by ERIC, the shortstop.

ERIC
What’s it like being famous?

CARTER
Tiresome.

CARTER is sitting in the dugout before the beginning of the game. LEWIS approaches him.

LEWIS
Hey Carter.

CARTER
Hey.

LEWIS
I was going to tell you something. Now I forgot.

BEN, the second baseman, overhears.

BEN
Is it that he needs to pitch six innings today? That’s usually it.

LEWIS
No, that’s not it...Oh! I got it!

CARTER
What is it?

LEWIS
Ray, get over here, I need to tell you something!

RAY runs over to LEWIS.

RAY
What is it Coach?

LEWIS whispers something inaudible into RAY’s ear.

RAY
Isn’t that something you should’ve told Carter?

LEWIS
I don’t know, is it?

RAY
It doesn’t have all that much to do with me, that’s for sure.

CARTER
Am I in trouble?

LEWIS
No!

DAVID, another starting pitcher, walks over.

DAVID
Can he be in trouble?

LEWIS
No! I get you want to take the role of ace pitcher, but Carter is better than you.

DAVID
Not if I have any say.

LEWIS
Do we need to talk about the incident again?

DAVID walks away.

CARTER
Look, it’s time to start the game. We have to get on the field.

LEWIS
Oh! That’s what I was gonna say!

CARTER walks out of the dugout, shaking his head and holding back a laugh. He pitches three flawless innings.

LEWIS (in the dugout)
Aren’t you going to get up now?

CARTER
What are you even talking about?

LEWIS
Your press conference!

CARTER
You never said a thing about a press conference!

LEWIS
I meant to.

CARTER
You didn’t.

LEWIS
This conversation is pointless, they’re waiting for you in the clubhouse.

CARTER
Why the clubhouse?

LEWIS
I don’t know, just be back in time for the next inning.

CARTER
Got it.

CARTER walks to the clubhouse, where he is greeted by many reporters. He answers a few basic questions before getting a tough one.

UNNAMED REPORTER
If you had a choice between pitching here and the Indianapolis Primitives, who would you pick?

CARTER
The Indianapolis Primitives are full of amazing pitchers. They all pitch the whole game usually. I like it here, six innings is more manageable. Plus, it is easier to be the star of the team here than it would there.

SAME UNNAMED REPORTER
Are you saying you think you would struggle with the Primitives?

CARTER
No, not at all.

LEWIS runs out to the clubhouse.

LEWIS
Carter, you’re pitching. They’ve been waiting for you.

SAME UNNAMED REPORTER
Carter I need an answer to my question.

LEWIS answers for CARTER as CARTER leaves to continue pitching.

LEWIS
I overheard what was going on. Yeah, obviously Carter is a great pitcher but he has a much easier time here. The pitchers here just aren’t as good. They’re talented enough to get this far and we have a decent team, but it’s not like we’re dealing with all the best pitchers here.

The reporters are taken aback by LEWIS’ comment. He leaves, going back to the dugout and sits down to a nearly empty bench. LEWIS realizes he gave a troublesome answer. ALLEN, the third-string catcher, greets him.

ALLEN
Everything okay Coach?

LEWIS
The starting pitchers here are not going to like me tomorrow.

ALLEN
What do you mean?

LEWIS
I belittled them by accident. Part of me thinks I might even lose my job.

The Charleston Capitals jog back to the dugout at the end of the inning CARTER goes up to LEWIS.

CARTER
Thanks for getting me out of the clubhouse, you’re a good coach.
