POTUS’d Episode 4: The Cabinet

BOBBY is sitting in his home office, organizing papers, when he hears the phone ring. He answers it.

BOBBY
Hello?

HOWARD
So I see I have a Cabinet now.

BOBBY
Oh! That. Yeah, I told the party head about who’s gonna be in the Cabinet.

HOWARD
Without even asking me?

BOBBY
Eh, I figured you wouldn’t mind.

HOWARD
Turn on the news.

BOBBY
Fine.

BOBBY finds the remote control to the small TV in his home office.

BOBBY
What?! Someone stole fruit from a store?!

HOWARD
No! Try any other news station.

BOBBY changes the channel.

BOBBY
Okay this one is just about car insurance.

HOWARD
That’s a commercial.

BOBBY changes the channel again.

BOBBY
Oh here we go! President-Elect Bobby Tilbourne announces Cabinet. Cool!

HOWARD
No, not cool. I didn’t approve any of this, yet the picks are exactly in line with my values.

BOBBY
You’re welcome.

HOWARD
No! The media is freaking out!

BOBBY
What are they saying?

HOWARD
Turn the volume up.

BOBBY turns the volume up. The round table of analysts are talking about the picks and point out how they line up with HOWARD’s ideologies more than BOBBY’s.

PANELIST 1
Now this leads me to bring up the point of how President-Elect Tilbourne mistakenly referred to Vice President-Elect Howard Brooks as the next President.

PANELIST 2
Yeah, with Tilbourne’s age as a factor, you have to wonder how much he actually plans on governing.

PANELIST 3
This isn’t a question about how much he plans on governing. This is a question about if he plans on governing at all!

PANELIST 4
Let’s not jump to conclusions here. We’ve seen President-Elect Tilbourne moving more to the side of Vice President-Elect Brooks over the course of the campaign.

PANELIST 5
That’s not true at all! Listen everyone, you might not want to hear this, but I don’t think President-Elect Tilbourne will ever be President. I think he’s resigning.

BOBBY shuts the television off and sits in shock.

HOWARD
You see?

BOBBY
It’s no big deal, these kid of things pass.

HOWARD
This is a huge deal. The media is starting to figure out what’s going on.

BOBBY
Not my problem.

HOWARD
Bobby! Don’t you care at all about the legacy you’re leaving?

BOBBY
Eh. You’re a strong enough candidate. You’ll do fine.

HOWARD
You’re leaving me in a mess. I haven’t even met any of these people in my Cabinet. Or even heard of them.

BOBBY
People love a nice surprise.

HOWARD
I gotta go. I’ll talk to you soon.

HOWARD hangs up. BOBBY shrugs and continues to organize papers, unfazed.
