After a year without predicting the renewal fates of shows on Freeform, TNT and Syfy, I'm bringing the renew/cancel for these three cable networks. Keep reading for predictions on Cruel Summer, Good Trouble, Everything's Gonna Be Okay and more!
Freeform:
Cruel Summer: It's certainly not a huge hit in first-run ratings, but Cruel Summer has proven to be solid for Freeform nonetheless. Its 0.10 average is better than shows like The Bold Type, Good Trouble and Everything's Gonna Be Okay and on-par with Motherland: Fort Salem. It isn't even that far behind Freeform's top show Grown-ish. It's also attracted strong buzz online and has a potent 13.3x audience demand multiplier per Parrot Analytics, easily the top score for any Freeform show. It seems to do well on Hulu, a platform owned by Freeform parent company Disney, which is hugely beneficial in securing a renewal. Its only potential set back is that it isn't produced by Freeform or Disney, but not being owned is probably not going to be a death knell for a first season show that's a strong performer. It's a CERTAIN RENEWAL.
Everything's Gonna Be Okay: I thought this show would be canceled last season and it still got renewed, so I have to re-assess the way I predict for Freeform. While this show has only averaged 0.04 this season, it's likely much cheaper than the rest of Freeform's shows, and has a decent 3.7x audience demand multiplier according to Parrot Analytics. Freeform could cancel it, as those ratings really don't make much of a case for another season, but it's not really down that much from last season and I think that's probably enough to make it to a third season.
TNT:
The Alienist: Its second season was heavily down from season one with an over 50% drop to a 0.20 average, a still perfectly-fine number. However, it aired in a sort-of burnoff situation, airing double episodes over four weeks on Sundays in July of 2020, nearly a year ago. I don't know what would make TNT no longer care for it, but it sure feels like they don't. Ratings point to a renewal, but everything else screams cancellation here. While a renewal isn't entirely out of the question, it would be a surprise. It's a LIKELY CANCELLATION.
Syfy:
The Pole: One of the lowest-rated series from the TZGZ lineup, this show seems like one of the most likely cuts of any of these short animated programs. It often missed out on making the top 150 on cable on the nights it aired, and when it did, it was always getting 0.03s and around 100,000 viewers. Syfy's threshold for renewal is very low, but this one seems like it'll come up short. It LEANS CANCELLATION.
The Summoner: While none of Syfy's animated TZGZ shows perform well, clearly this one did so badly that they absolutely hate it. You literally can not watch it anywhere. Not on their website, not on-demand, not in repeats on the network. No clips of it are available anywhere, having been pulled from every source. The ratings were abysmal and it rarely even broke into the top 150 original programs on cable on the night it aired, and it seems like very few will miss it. If it ever existed at all... It's a CERTAIN CANCELLATION.
