CARTER is sitting in the dugout. BEN approaches him.
BEN
Sorry bud.
CARTER
About what?
BEN
That’s the spirit.
BEN walks away. CARTER looks confused. He walks up to RAY.
CARTER
You ready for the big game today, Ray?
RAY
As ready as always. I’ll have to get used to the new pitcher but I’m sure I’ll adjust. Just like I adjusted when you were called up to the starting lineup.
CARTER
Huh?
RAY
You know, because you’re not pitching today?
CARTER
Says who?
RAY
Lewis really never told you?
CARTER
Nope.
RAY
You know how the left fielder and right fielder had been throwing a ball to each other earlier out on the field?
CARTER
Yeah...
RAY
You’re in center field.
CARTER
No I’m not, I’m a pitcher!
RAY
Not today.
CARTER
Tomorrow?
RAY
Not for the foreseeable future.
LEWIS walks up to CARTER.
LEWIS
I’m afraid it’s true, Carter. But don’t worry, I’m sure you’ll have fun out there.
CARTER
No.
LEWIS
What do you mean?
CARTER
I mean no. I’m not doing that!
LEWIS
You have no choice.
CARTER
Why are you doing this to me?!
LEWIS
It wasn’t my decision. Go talk to Jaime if it bothers you. I tried but couldn’t get through.
CARTER leaves the dugout.
LEWIS [to RAY]
I meant after the game. Eh, who needs a center fielder?
CARTER walks past the receptionist and arrives at JAIME’s office.
JAIME
Yes?
CARTER
I’m not playing center field.
JAIME
Do you want to be on the Charleston Capitols or not? Because if you do, the opening is at center field. So what do you say?
CARTER doesn’t answer.
JAIME
You’re a star. Big crowds coming for you. Constant autograph signings and media appearances. Don’t you like those?
CARTER
Well...yeah.
JAIME
Think about it. You’re a star here. Everybody loves you.
CARTER
That’s great and all, but I want to be a pitcher. I’m a baseball player. I’ve worked all my life to be a pitcher. And I’m good at it. For the most part at least.
JAIME
Well just try out center field for now.
CARTER
I want to get traded. I’ll stay through my contract, but I’m not re-signing. That’s final.
CARTER walks away.
