NBC Extends Manifest by Three Episodes

One of the fall's biggest newbies has finally been cleared for a few more takeoffs. Manifest, the sci-fi airplane drama starring Josh Dallas and Melissa Roxburgh, will last for at least three more episodes. While higher-rated that fellow new drama New Amsterdam, which received a full backorder, it's not much of a surprise that Manifest's backorder is a shorter one. The format and plot of the show doesn't naturally fit a lengthy season in the same way as fellow 22 episode dramas on the broadcast, and the Mondays at 10 slot is a lucrative slot traditionally used to launch a few new dramas in recent seasons (2015's Blindspot being the last show to last a full 22-episode season in the slot). With multiple new dramas on the bench for midseason and very few open slots to air them, something on the NBC schedule had to settle for less than 22 and Manifest seems to be it. The short backorder shouldn't be seen as any sign the show is struggling, as it remains the #1 new drama on TV and is by far the biggest success story for NBC on Mondays in many years. The TV Ratings Guide currently ranks the show as a likely renewal.
