NBC Renew/Cancel Week 8: Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist Still In Solid Shape

Since our last NBC Renew/Cancel, NBC has renewed one of its longest-running series, and we've gotten some more ratings data on a bubble series. Keep reading to see my thoughts on Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist and The Blacklist.

Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist: This show probably does not deserve a renewal prediction, and it certainly doesn't deserve a renewal, based on its Live+Same-Day ratings alone. They're horrible. However, NBC renews shows with horrible ratings all the time! Transplant got a renewal earlier this season, and The Blacklist just got one earlier this week! That's because networks are in it for the money, not just the ratings. Zoey is a seemingly-strong following in streaming, with a large audience demand for the series, per Parrot Analytics. Shows with solid streaming performances are canceled plenty of times, just look at Superstore. However, in the case of the young Zoey's Playlist, expenses probably aren't as high as an older show like Superstore. It also managed a renewal in season one despite horrid ratings (it's actually up year-to-year!), so NBC clearly sees value in it. They co-own it alongside Lionsgate, so there's certainly value there for NBC if the streaming deal is right. I'll keep an eye on it, since the ratings are still rough, but there seems to be much more going for it than against it for now. It still LEANS RENEWAL.

The Blacklist: Oh, well. The annual tradition of me incorrectly predicting this show lives on.
