William Fry & Michael Ledesma THE DAY

BEFORE THANKSGIVING

INT. STUDENT UNION - DAY

Sarah and Megan sit at a table eating. Andrew and Edison join them.

EDISON

Last class before Thanksgiving break is done. I thought I wouldn’t get through it.

ANDREW

You were asleep the whole time.

EDISON

Thank goodness you took notes.

SARAH

So what’s everyone’s Thanksgiving plans?

ANDREW

Well, I’m staying here. I can’t stand another Thanksgiving dinner full of relatives fighting.

MEGAN

Same. My relatives keep asking me what I think about Ellen. There are other lesbian celebrities other than Ellen.

EDISON

You are so lucky. I’m gonna have to spend Thanksgiving with MY family.

MEGAN

So?

EDISON

Have you ever been to a Mexican Thanksgiving?

MEGAN

No.

EDISON

Let’s just say it is a mix of fun and hell.

SARAH

You know, since none of us want to spend Thanksgiving with our families, how about we celebrate together? Just the four of us.

ANDREW

I’m down. Same.

MEGAN EDISON

This is going to be so much fun.

SARAH

Yay. Okay, I’ll do the shopping.

EDISON

Can I go with you?

The group stares at Edison in silence.

SARAH

You… want to go grocery shopping? With me?

EDISON

Uhhhh yeah, I just asked you that. Weren't you listening?

ANDREW

But you hate grocery shopping.

EDISON

No I don’t.

ANDREW

You give me a list of what you want and I have to go buy it along with my stuff.

EDISON

I just do that to get some alone time. So how about it Sarah? Can I come?

SARAH

Yeah, sure.

EDISON

Aright then.

Edison raises his glass.

EDISON

To Thanksgiving or should I say Friendsgiving.

The group clink their glasses. THANKSGIVING DAY

INT. APARTMENT DAY - DAY

Andrew and Megan set the table.

MEGAN

I love Thanksgiving.

ANDREW

Seriously?

MEGAN

Yeah. It’s the one time of year where every American has an excuse to eat large amounts of food.

ANDREW

We already do that the other 364 day of the year.

MEGAN

But, Thanksgiving just makes it special. What about you? Do you like Thanksgiving?

ANDREW

No not really.

MEGAN

Why?

ANDREW

Well, promise you won’t tell Sarah.

Done.

MEGAN

ANDREW

My parents hate each other.

MEGAN

What?

ANDREW

They hate each other. All they do is fight.

MEGAN

If they hate each other, then why did they get married?

ANDREW

I’ve been wondering that myself. I think at one time, they loved each other and then… they just stopped.

MEGAN

Do you think they’ll get divorced?

ANDREW

They’ve always said they would but then they would make up for the time being. Anyway, they mostly fight during holidays.

MEGAN

I’m sorry Andrew.

ANDREW

Yeah well, at least I got Sarah and I know I’ll never stop loving her.

Andrew and Megan smile at each other and continue setting the table.

INT. GROCERY STORE - DAY

Sarah and Edison enter the grocery store. It is busy with shoppers.

SARAH

Okay, first we need to get the turkey.

EDISON

Uh huh yeah. I'm sure you got it handled.

Edison begins walking away.

SARAH

Whoa whoa whoa, where are you going?

Shopping.

EDISON

SARAH

You don’t even know what we need.

EDISON

Let rephrase that, I’m shopping for myself. Not Thanksgiving.

Sarah glares at Edison.

EDISON

Meet back here in 15 minutes?

Sarah continues glaring at Edison.

EDISON

Great.

Edison turns and leaves Sarah. Sarah walks over to the turkey section. There is one turkey left. She reaches for it but is pushed to the ground by an older woman who picks up the turkey.

SARAH

The hell?

The older woman barely registers Sarah and walks away with the turkey. Sarah stands up. She fumes.

Edison walks down the arts and crafts aisle carrying a PS5 along with a stack of video games. He stops and kneels down. He sets the PS5 and the games on the floor and begins removing products off the bottom shelf. After removing a few items, Edison prepares to put the PS5 and the games on the shelf. Sarah appears behind him.

SARAH

What the hell are you doing? Edison jumps at the sound of her voice.

EDISON

Are you done already?

SARAH

I haven't even started. Now, what are you doing?

EDISON

Well, I’m-I’m thinking of getting into arts and crafts.

SARAH

I once asked you to go to the crafts fair on campus and you said that it was a chick thing.

EDISON

Okay fine, I’m not. The truth is, I’m hiding the PS5 and the games behind the arts and crafts so that I can get them on Black Friday.

SARAH

Why the arts and craft section?

EDISON

Because no one goes down this aisle. Arts and crafts are lame Sarah. Join the real world.

SARAH

Why do you have to hide it?

Later.

EDISON

Well, if I don’t, then they’ll all be gone. But in this case, I’ll have this one safely stashed.

SARAH

Fine whatever. Just hide it and help me shop.

EXT. GROCERY STORE - DAY

Sarah and Edison exit the grocery store with a cart of groceries.

EDISON

It’s too bad we couldn’t get a turkey.

SARAH

Yeah.

They pass by the older lady who stole Sarah's turkey. She is loading her car.

EDISON

Okay, when I say go, run like hell to the car.

SARAH

What?

Edison jogs over to the older lady’s car and snatches the turkey.

EDISON

Go go go!

Before the older lady can react, Sarah and Edison run towards their car.

INT. APARTMENT - DAY

The four friends sit around the dining room table. In the center is the turkey surrounded by sides. Andrew stands up.

ANDREW

I’d like to say what I’m grateful for. I’m grateful for my friends who are always there for me. I’m also grateful for my girlfriend who I’ll never stoploving.

Andrew and Sarah smile at each other.

EDISON

Can we just eat now?

MEGAN

(With a mouth full of food)

Yep.

The four friends dig into their holiday meal END.
