The Blacklist: NBC's long-running crime drama returned last Friday with a thud, drawing just a 0.4 and even hitting a 0.3 in the second half-hour. That's a big dropoff from the 0.5-0.5 range it was performing at near the end of season seven. I'll cut it a bit of slack on the sixe of the drop since those results were from when people actually stayed home due to COVID, which many aren't doing now. However, the season eight premiere rating is still easily a new low (its previous low was a 0.42 from last October), and comes in over a point below its 2019 premiere. Even with all of that, ratings alone aren't making me think it will be canceled. After all, lower ratings are being more accepted now as streaming deals have begun to dictate whether a show lives or dies. However, The Blacklist is a very old show that has long seemed like it could end at any time. Eight seasons is a great run, and I think that's where this show will end its run. Ratings aren't there anymore, the cost of production has to be rising dramatically, contracts need to be signed again and surely, the cast will want to move on sometime soon. I thought last year that the end was nigh, so maybe it'll cheat death again, but I'm placing it in LEANS CANCELLATION for now.
