INT. UNIVERSITY COUSLING ROOM - DAY
Edison sits across from Jenkins. They stare at each other in silence.
JENKINS
Edison, this only works if you talk.
EDISON
This is a waste of time. I don’t even know why I’m here.
JENKINS
Well…
Jenkins opens a folder.
JENKINS
According to the police report, you suffered a stress induced breakdown in the middle of the University after which you stole a university owned golf cart and crashed it into a statue of the University’s founder.
EDISON
Who leaves the keys in an unattended golf cart? Also, the founder was super racist. If anything, I did the University a favor.
JENKINS
Be that as it may, the University has agreed not to expel you or press charges if you talked to me.
EDISON
They’re afraid that my “breakdown” was because of school. They don’t want the bad publicity.
JENKINS
Maybe. But also, they want to make sure that you are okay.
EDISON
I am. Can I go now?
JENKINS
Not until I say so.
EDISON
I’m pretty sure that makes me a hostage.
JENKINS
(Sigh)
Let’s begin. Where do you think the root of this breakdown began?
EDISON
Well… I guess it began when I young. When I found that body in the river near my house.
JENKINS
What?
EDISON
Some cartel thing. I had to testify. Although now that I think about it, it began when my ex-girlfriend told me she was pregnant.
JENKINS
Sounds like you took the news well. Not many people do.
EDISON
Yeah well, what can I say, I’m a chill dude. Besides, I wouldn’t do anything to hurt Brittaney.
JENKINS
Why is that?
EDISON
Uhhhh because I’m a decent human being.
JENKINS
Are you sure it’s not because your father left your mother before you were born?
EDISON
How did you-?
JENKINS
I talked to your mother.
EDISON
Oh. Well yeah, I guess. I’m not gonna abandon Britt. I’m not like him.
JENKINS
Hmmmmm. So, Brittaney told you she was pregnant. What happened next?
EDISON
Well, Andrew and I decided to take a summer class.
JENKINS
How did you and Brittaney’s friends handle the news?
EDISON
Not the way we expected.
JENKINS
So, your friends took it… well.
EDISON
Yeah.
JENKINS
So, what happened next?
EDISON
Well, Brittaney continued living with Sarah. We had dinner every night. As friends of course. Andrew and I continued working on our hot sauce. Megan and Paige continued dating. I think Paige and I are at a point where we can call each other mutual friends. But yeah, summer was great. Britt was happy that she was able to wear a bikini before she started showing. Then we got a house for us all to rent. Then we got married. Best day of my life. Until you know… the baby.
JENKINS
Which brings us to the incident. What happened?
Edison sighs.
EXT. CAMPUS - DAY
The group walks around campus.
EDISON
Did you confirm the appointment with the doc?
BRITTANEY
Yes, for the trillionth time I did.
MEGAN
What’s so important about this appointment?
EDISON
We’ll find out the gender.
ANDREW
What are you hoping for?
EDISON
It doesn’t matter.
MEGAN
You're hoping it’s a boy.
EDISON
I didn't say it.
INT. COUSLING OFFICE - DAY
JENKINS
And then the meltdown happened?
EDISON
We’ll suddenly, I began to realize that… I was going to be a father. Me, a soon to be father who doesn’t have a job or his bachelors yet. A soon to be father who… isn’t ready.
JENKINS
I see.
EDISON
What?
JENKINS
It’s all clear now.
EDISON
It is?
JENKINS
Edison, you accepted the idea of parenthood way too easily. It sounds like you and Brittaney never had a TALK.
EDISON
We’ve talked.
JENKINS
But not TALKED. Edison, you and she are about to bring a new life into the world. That is something you can’t just accept easily. And no parent is ever fully prepared for this.
EDISON
So, what do I do?
JENKINS
Accept. Accept that from here on out, nothing will ever be the same. Your life has changed.
EDISON
Uh huh. So, am I clear?
Jenkins sighs and signs a piece of paper.
JENKINS
You’re clear.
EDISON
Thank you.
Edison gets up and leaves.
EXT. UNIVERSITY BUILDING - DAY
Brittaney is waiting outside on a bench. Edison exits the building and Brittaney stands up.
BRITTANEY
Well?
EDISON
All clear.
The couple smile at each other.
EDISON
I’m sorry. For freaking out.
BRITTANEY
It’s okay. Frankly I’m surprised you didn't sooner.
EDISON
I’m just… scared. I’m gonna do something stupid.
BRITTANEY
Of course, you are.
They smile at each other.
EDISON
Want to get some pizza?
BIRTTANEY
Oooooh yeah. Can we get some peanut butter to go with it?
EDISON
This pregnant thing just keeps getting weirder.
