INT. ITALIAN RESAURANT - DAY
Edison and Brittaney sit at a table.
EDISON
Happy first Valentine’s Day as a married couple.
BRITTANEY
You know, when you said you were taking me to a fancy Italian restaurant, you forgot to mention that it was an Olive Garden.
EDISON
Britt, this is the best Italian place ever. Unlimited breadsticks. You love breadstick.
BRITTANEY
Yeah, I do.
Brittaney reaches for a breadstick but stops.
BRITTANEY
Edison.
EDISON
Yeah?
BRITTANEY
My water.
EDIAON
Do you need a refill?
BRITTANEY
No, my water… it broke.
It takes Edison a couple seconds to realize what she’s talking about.
EDISON
Oh my gosh, your water! This is it isn’t it?
Brittaney nods.
Edison gets up and helps Brittaney up and they leave the restaurant.
INT. HOUSE - NIGHT
Andrew sits on the couch watching tv. Megan and Paige exit their room wearing nice dresses.
ANDREW
Looks like you all have Valentine’s Day plans.
MEGAN
Yes, we do. We’re going to dinner.
PAIGE
What about you?
ANDREW
Well, I was going to binge watch “The Book of Boba Fett” and eat a tub of mint chip but I do have a paper that I haven’t started yet.
PAIGE
Where’s Sarah?
ANDREW
She said she was studying at a coffee shop.
MEGAN
Well, while you enjoy your depressing Valentine’s Day, WE are going to go enjoy ours.
Andrew’s phone rings. He answers.
ANDREW
Hello? Edison- Edison slow down. Wait really? Okay, we’ll be there.
Andrew hangs up and gets up.
ANDREW
Brittaney’s water broke.
INT. HOSPTIAL - DAY
Andrew, Megan, and Paige are standing in the waiting room. Edison enters.
ANDREW
How’s Britt?
EDISON
So far so good.
PAIGE
What did the doctor say?
EDISON
I wasn’t paying attention. You know, those medical shows are a lot easier to understand than real medicine. Sorry if I ruined your plans?
MEGAN
Are you kidding? We wouldn’t miss this.
Sarah enters wearing a nice dress.
EDISON
Where were YOU.
SARAH
I was… on a date.
Sarah avoids looking at Andrew.
SARAH
How is she?
EDISON
Good. I should get back.
Edison leaves.
In the patient room, Brittaney lays in bed sweating and breathing.
EDISON
Hey, the group’s here. How’re you doing?
BRITTANEY
So far so good. I just wish I had my headphones so I could listen to my playlist.
EDISON
Why not just play it put loud?
BRITTANEY
Do you want to listen to Taylor Swift?
EDISON
I’ll get your headphones.
Edison walks back to the waiting room.
EDISON
Hey, can one of y’all go back to the house and get Britt’s headphones?
SARAH
I’ll go.
ANDREW
I’ll go with you. We’ll pack some other stuff for you.
EDISON
Thanks man.
INT. HOUSE - NIGHT
Andrew and Sarah look around Edison and Brittaney’s room.
ANDREW
So, you were on a date.
SARAH
Yeah.
ANDREW
Do I know him?
SARAH
No.
ANDREW
Cool. Cool cool cool. So uh, is it serious?
SARAH
Kind of.
ANDREW
Kinda?
SARAH
We’ve only been dating for a month.
ANDREW
Huh. How’d you two meet?
SARAH
In class.
ANDREW
Uh huh.
SARAH
Okay, what’s wrong?
ANDREW
Nothing.
SARAH
Andrew.
ANDREW
Look, I just… I don’t know. I haven’t seen anyone since we broke up but clearly you have, and I guess I… thought you weren’t.
SARAH
Look I… I’ve moved on. And if you were looking for permission from me to see other people than you got it.
ANDREW
What if I don’t want to see other people?
SARAH
Oh Andrew.
ANDREW
I’m serious. Sarah, I don’t remember why we broke up. Why don’t we just… start fresh.
There is a silence between them.
SARAH
We broke up because you didn't have children. Because you were so afraid to be like your parent’s. YOU wanted to break up.
ANDREW
I never said that.
SARAH
You didn't have to!
They stare at each other.
ANDREW
Um. We should… we should get the headphones and some stuff.
Sarah nods and go back to packing.
INT. WAITING ROOM - NIGHT
Megan and Paige sit in the waiting room.
MEGAN
Sorry about Valentine’s Day.
PAIGE
You kidding? I’m with you. That’s all that matters.
They smile at each other.
PAIGE
You know, we can still have dinner. Just… from a vending machine.
MEGAN
I’ll go get some.
PAIGE
No no, dinner’s on me.
Paige gets up and walks down a hall. Edison is standing in front of the vending machine.
PAIGE
Hey, aren’t you supposed to be with Brittaney?
EDISON
She uh… wanted a soda. Hasn’t had one in months.
PAIGE
Oh.
EDISON
I can’t do this.
PAIGE
What?
EDISON
I-I can’t go through this. I-
PAIGE
Edison stop right there. You and I may not be the closest but I’m going to give you a talk. Right now, you are stressed. Any guy would be. But in a few moments, Brittaney is going to push a tiny human out of her vagina. So, she is going to need the positive. Not whatever it is you are going through now. You need to be her rock actually no, you need to be her diamond. Understand?
Edison nods.
PAIGE
Great.
A nurse approaches Edison.
NURSE
She’s ready.
INT. CAR - NIGHT
Sarah drives while Andrew sits in the passenger seat. Andrew’s phone dings.
ANDREW
Brittaney's delivering.
SARAH
We’re almost there.
ANDREW
I’m sorry.
SARAH
What?
ANDREW
I… I’m sorry for everything. For what I said.
SARAH
Thank you. You know, if you want to start dating someone, you can. Don’t worry about me.
ANDREW
Okay.
INT. DELIVERY ROOM - NIGHT
Brittaney is screaming. A Doctor sits on front of her elevated legs. Edison stands next to Brittaney.
DOCTOR
I need you to push.
Brittaney screams while she pushes.
EDISON
You’re doing good.
BRITTANEY
Keep talking! Please!
EDISON
Ummm okay hey, so I’ve officially given off on the reusable condom.
BRITTANEY
Really? Why?
EDISON
Turns out it doesn't work.
BRITTANEY
What?
EDISON
Yeah, the funny thing is, that night of my birthday, when we you know. Did it. Well, I didn’t have protection, so I used the next best thing.
The room goes silent, and Brittaney gives Edison a stare of death.
BRITTANEY
Edison, tell me you didn’t use your stupid invention.
EDISON
Uhhhhhhh.
BRITTANEY
You, stupid son of a-
Brittaney screams as she pushes. She squeezes Edison hand tightly. Edison yells in pain.
The sound of a baby is heard.
Andre and Sarah enter the waiting room.
ANDREW
Any news?
Megan shakes her head.
Edison enters. His hand is in a cast.
ANDREW
The hell happened to you.
EDISON
So uhhhh turns out pregnant women are incredibly strong.
SARAH
Britt?
EDISON
She’s fine.
MEGAN
Anything else?
EDISON
(Smiling)
Oh, shit right the baby. Happy and healthy girl.
ANDREW
What’s her name?
EDISON
Christina. After my mom.
ANDREW
Congrats man.
EDISON
Thanks. I’m… I’m gonna go be with her.
Edison smiles at the group.
Edison enters the delivery room. Brittaney is holding their daughter.
EDISON
Is it safe to enter?
BRITTANEY
(Smiling)
Get over here.
Edison walks over to them.
EDISON
I’m sorry about… you know-
BRITTANEY
Shhhh. I’m not mad. How can I be. I mean look at her. Edison, she’s ours.
The couple smiles at the new life they have brought into this world.
