FOX Renew/Cancel: Last Man Standing is Still Likely to be Renewed, and The Resident Leans Towards Renewal

Welcome to the latest installment of FOX Renew/Cancel, and while nothing has changed in the predictions, I thought I would take a moment to point out something that has been suggested on many network Renew/Cancel posts as well as future Scorecard posts -- putting dates. All posts now have dates (thanks Blogger settings!). But back on topic, here are this week's predictions.

Last Man Standing: In the last installment, I have written that Last Man Standing has settled into the 0.7-0.8 range. Yet three weeks ago, Last Man Standing hit a series low of a 0.6. That ended up being a fluke as the show is now back in the 0.7-0.8 range. But on a gradual note, Last Man Standing is seeing diminishing returns on the ratings front. It's also unowned, like every veteran show on FOX due to its studio now being owned by the Walt Disney Company. But at this point, FOX has bigger fish to fry than Last Man Standing. If this were at 0.4-0.5s like Outmatched or animated comedy Duncanville, I'd be singing a different tune given the expenses. Expenses can wait another day. Last Man Standing remains a likely renewal.

The Resident: I've been going back and forth on its prediction all season, and as of today, it still leans towards renewal. Given that it's unowned and that the pattern for veteran FOX dramas are that shows with diminishing returns, whether it's ratings, expenses, or both, get canceled. It happened with Star. It happened with Lucifer and Lethal Weapon. It happened with Sleepy Hollow. The Orville moved to Hulu. Since the current FOX veterans are not even owned by FOX Entertainment, I would expect that FOX would be ruthless with its decision making. But, every single midseason rookie except for 9-1-1: Lone Star is doing relatively worse. Plus, Prodigal Son is pulling diminishing returns. At this point, FOX has bigger fish to fry than worrying about The Resident. Unless it starts pulling 0.5 or lower, I think The Resident has a shot at returning. But I would not be shocked if this gets canceled as I would be with Last Man Standing, if patterns tell you anything. Canceling The Resident would not bring an end to the drama division. Canceling Last Man Standing would signal a change in comedy direction given that FOX has ramped up production on animated comedies which only do well after NFL overruns in the fall.
