The Good Doctor: ABC's most-promoted new drama premiered to a very strong 2.2, growing significantly out of its lead-in. Why isn't it certain to be renewed? Because it's a new show in week one. Anything can happen. But, most likely, it will be upgraded next week.
Speechless: After a promising first season, Speechless returned as the weak link of ABC's Wednesday comedy line-up. It's still doing fine, so I don't expect cancelation, but a renewal isn't guaranteed, since the network's comedy slate will be crowded if one or more of this season's new comedies succeeds, and ABC doesn't own it. Most likely, rather than cancelation, it will receive a timeslot downgrade for next season.
American Housewife: ABC gave this, their owned sophomore comedy, a timeslot upgrade, and while it didn't seem to take full advantage of the opportunity, but it still performed well, and the scheduling move indicates that ABC wants it to last (perhaps to inherit Modern Family's timeslot when the show comes to an end, likely in 2019).
Designated Survivor: This season, ABC's lone sophomore drama got off to a start that was not exceptional, but is acceptable. A poor trajectory from here could lead it to cancelation, but we will have to wait and see. For now, the odds are in its favor.
How to Get Away with Murder: It is off to a disappointing start, premiering low by the show's standards despite a large lead-in from Grey's Anatomy. However, with Scandal ending this season, I don't see ABC also ditching Murder. It should be safe this time around.
Grey's Anatomy: There's no reason for ABC to cancel their highest-rated drama. Grey's Anatomy is certain to be renewed.
