Thursday TV Ratings 9/28/17: Will & Grace Starts Very High, Series High for Great News (UPDATED)

It was a very busy Premiere Thursday, but all eyes were on the revival of Will & Grace. NBC's iconic series returned after 11 years off the air, and it was a very strong start. The series started the season with a very strong 2.9, well above anything any NBC sitcom has done in a very, very, very long time. The news elsewhere on the NBC block was, well, mixed. Superstore started with a 1.2, well below its last premiere but way higher than its season finale. The Good Place had the most impressive performance of the three smaller shows, tying its post-AGT outing and besting its other 2017 episodes. Great News severely underperformed, with a 1.3 despite its 2.9 W&G lead-in. It's not a good performance, by any means, but the network already knew that the show was low-rated when they renewed it, so this shouldn't be shocking for anything. The only "good" thing about its performance is that it's a series high for the show. At 10, Chicago Fire had a strong performance with a 1.5, growing two tenths from both its lead-in and its finale. On ABC, Grey's Anatomy had a two-hour premiere, and the network is likely quite happy with its performance. The show delivered a strong 2.3 in both hours, down two tenths from 2016 but up from both the 2016-17 average and every post-February datapoint. At 10, How To Get Away With Murder had a very unimpressive return, only able to muster a 1.1, three tenths below its finale despite the higher lead-in. The show ties its series low, which isn't a positive sign for the show's future. Fox's shows had their second episodes (technically fourth for the Orville). Gotham sank to a new series low of 0.8, while The Orville held at 1.1. It's a really promising datapoint for The Orville, but Gotham looks rough here. The comic book series had better hope that this is the floor (it very likely won't be) or it's in for some rough times ahead. The CW had Penn & Teller at 0.4 and Whose Line? at 0.2. CBS had a low result from Thursday Night Football, but it will likely adjust way up in the finals.

Update: Will & Grace (+0.1), Superstore (+0.1), The Good Place (+0.1), and Gotham (+0.1) adjusted up. How to Get Away With Murder (-0.1) adjusted down.
