ABC has renewed Nebraska-set sitcom Bless This Mess for a second season. The series has had a strange journey on its way to renewal, having originally been in development at Fox before scoring an off-cycle six-episode pickup in late 2018. The show's first season will span just six episodes, an unusually-short number of episodes for a show that's surrounded by unusual circumstances. The show surprised on premiere night by growing from its Blackish lead-in and being the #1 show of the night on ABC, but it slipped after that and posted ratings that were average for the low-rated comedy lineup's lowest-rated slot. The potential that Bless This Mess showed on premiere night, plus its still-solid retention from Blackish was likely enough to earn in a renewal in a season that saw zero comedy breakouts on ABC.
