Today Show Continues To Dominate Ratings For 3rd Consecutive Week

Written Out of the Ashes by Bridger Cunningham

Few positive headlines have emerged out of the Sexual Assault Dumpster Fire of 2017.  Since Matt Laurer's shameful termination on November 29, however, Today has reclaimed the 1st place throne in all ratings measures since.  Per Deadline.com,  the week of December 11, Today bested fierce competitor Good Morning America by two-tenths in the key 1849 demographic (1.0 vs. 0.8, respectively).  This also marks one of the longest streaks Today has enjoyed this post since Good Morning America reclaimed 1st place in the Summer of 2012.  Since that fateful summer, GMA has maintained the lead for most weeks with brief punctuation in continuity such as the Summer Olympics coverage in 2016.

Today has dominated the morning show arena for much of its broadcast since its inception on January 14, 1952.  It remained the leader until 1989 when ABC's Good Morning America overtook it in the ratings, regularly taking 2nd place.  From 1995-2012, Today again remained in 1st Place until behind-the-scenes turmoil resulted in awkward tensions between Matt Lauer and Ann Curry, ending with her exit from the program.  Below is the ratings data for the three morning shows for the week of December 11:

                                          Overall Viewers    25-54A    18-49A
