Housebroken: The newest animated comedy on Fox outright bombed on Monday, with 50% retention of its Hell's Kitchen lead-in with just a 0.3. It also had less than 1 million viewers. While viewership doesn't matter, especially for these Fox cartoons, it's still quite notable to see a new show on broadcast television having such a weak viewership count, especially for a premiere. This all seems to be indicting a cancellation prediction, right? Well... amazingly, it is not. It's obviously no lock, but at this point I am expecting Housebroken to return. Firstly, Housebroken is from Bento Box Entertainment, an animation studio that the network fully owns. That they have an ownership stake in the show is likely quite important, and that probably is what helped them make quick renewal decisions on fellow Bento Box series The Great North and Duncanville. Speaking of which, Fox seems quite dedicated to maintaining year-round comedy, having renewed the even lower-rated Duncanville for a third season ahead of season two (they did the same with The Great North, which boasts mildly higher ratings than Housebroken). In the modern era of Animation Domination, they have yet to cancel an animated sitcom after a single season. They give these shows a chance and nurture them. Maybe they'll decided that Housebroken isn't worth it. Based on these premiere ratings, I certainly wouldn't blame them for that, but it LEANS RENEWAL to start with.
LEGO Masters: LEGO Masters can thank its lucky stars that you don't need big ratings to get renewed in the summer, because it completely faltered when it returned from hiatus, slipping over 50% from its post-Masked Singer low with a 0.4 premiere this year. That drop, and that rating, don't give me confidence that this show is going to be a longtime player for Fox. There are positives for it, though. First off, Fox seems to like this show. They ordered a spinoff, Domino Masters, just a few months ago. 0.4s also seem to be a pretty standard rating for summer programming this year, meaning that the weaker ratings don't necessarily doom LEGO Masters. If it can stay steady at 0.4, it's pretty likely to return. It LEANS RENEWAL until I see how it settles.
America's Got Talent: While it's nothing close to the powerhouse it once was, America's Got Talent remains untouched among summer TV. Only The Bachelorette and Big Brother even come close to delivering ratings as solid as AGT, and neither of those shows even air on NBC. It's the Peacock net's best summer performer, and it out-rates most of their in-season programming, as well. With a spinoff on the way and ratings still high, it's obvious that this show is going nowhere. It's a CERTAIN RENEWAL.
Hell's Kitchen and MasterChef: Gordon Ramsay is basically the President of Fox at this point. These shows both remain remarkably solid for Fox and deliver consistent wins for the network. They end when Ramsay says they end, and it doesn't look like that's anytime soon for either of them. Both are CERTAIN RENEWALS.
