Ted Danson Quits Mr. Mayor, to be Replaced by Shelley Long

NBC has turned to one of their most beloved sitcom stars to step in to replace another. Ted Danson, star of Tina Fey's Mr. Mayor, has decided to quit the show so he can star in the upcoming spinoff of Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist alongside his real-life wife Mary Steenburgen. He will be replaced by his former Cheers co-star Shelley Long, who will play Nellie Bremmer, the sister of Danson's character. Nellie steps in as mayor after her brother's mysterious disappearance. To reflect the new star, the series will be retitled "Mrs. Mayor." This marks Long's first series regular role on television since 1998. NBC says they are thrilled to welcome her back to the network, and have already committed to airing it on Thursdays at 9 PM (the old timeslot of Cheers) in the slot before Kirstie Alley's new sitcom in which she will play her Scream Queens character.
