GARRY has the team huddle up in the dugout.
GARRY
Alright guys. Fifth inning, we’re up by five.
BRAYDEN
We know that.
GAVIN
I didn’t.
GARRY
Thank you Gavin. I mean, you should’ve known that.
GAVIN
Then why are you telling us?
GARRY
Are you gonna let me give my motivational speech or not?
JAXON
You brought it upon yourself, we didn’t ask for this.
GARRY
I’m the coach, it’s what I’m supposed to do and what I want to do. What’s the matter with you guys?
The team stands in silence for a few seconds.
COOPER
Colton’s crying!
COLTON turns his face away from the group.
HUDSON
Congratulations Coach Garry, you made Colton cry.
GARRY
Dear Lord. I want you guys to go out there and win the game.
COLTON [choked up]
How are we supposed to if something’s the matter with us?
GARRY
Just pretend I didn’t say that part.
GARRY sees a woman running down to the dugout. He quickly realizes it’s COLTON’s mom. She enters the dugout and sits next to COLTON.
COLTON’S MOM
Colton baby, it’s okay!
COLTON
Are you sure?
COLTON’S MOM
Coach Garry was being mean to you.
GARRY
I was not!
COLTON
You said there was something the matter with me.
GARRY
Not personally you. The entire team. And as I said, forget I said it. And ma’am, you should not be in the dugout right now.
COLTON’S MOM
I can be where I want to be. Do your job, jerk.
GARRY
My job is for Colton to get over to second base. The rest of the team just went onto the field.
COLTON is still shaken up but walks to second base.
GARRY sits on the bench alone, trying to figure out how to be blunt to the kids without offending them or getting their parents angry. He watches the other team hit a ball down the left field line. The ball drops in foul territory but is called fair. GARRY runs onto the field and to the third base umpire.
GARRY
Are you kidding me?!
THIRD BASE UMPIRE
The ball was on the line. Fair ball.
GARRY
That ball was not on the line! You’re screwing my kids!
THIRD BASE UMPIRE
They still got the kid out, relax man.
GARRY
Relax?! RELAX?!?!
THIRD BASE UMPIRE
Oh look, it’s another coach having a meltdown.
GARRY
Screw you.
The THIRD BASE UMPIRE makes a motion to indicate GARRY has been ejected from the game.
LANDON jogs from left field to the umpire.
GARRY
Landon, for the love of God please do not get involved in this.
LANDON
Need me to talk to the ump for you?
GARRY
No Landon, leave the guy alone.
LANDON
What’s going on?
GARRY
This kind man threw me out of the game.
SANTIAGO walks from third base to the umpire, while WESLEY walks over from center field.
SANTIAGO
What do you need us to tell him?
GARRY
Nothing. I shouldn’t have yelled at him. I’m setting a bad example.
WESLEY
Can we have the snacks early? I’m hungry.
GARRY
Go ahead, I guess.
WESLEY starts to walk to the dugout.
GARRY
AFTER THE INNING IS OVER.
THIRD BASE UMPIRE
Sir, it’s time for you to leave.
GARRY
Got it.
GARRY walks away. The Automobiles play the rest of the game without him and end up losing.
