The group is in the living room watching a movie. A phone goes off.
EDISON
Alright, who didn’t silence their phone?
The others look at each other. Edison pulls out his phone.
EDISON
Whoops, my bad.
Edison answers his phone.
EDISON
Mom? What? When? How? Okay… Okay. I’ll… I’ll be there.
Edison hangs up.
BRITTANEY
What’s wrong?
EDISON
My uncle died.
The next day…
INT. CAR - DAY
The group sits in a car. Edison is driving, Brittaney is in the passenger’s seat, and Andrew, Sarah and Megan are in the back.
SARAH
So, how close were you to your uncle?
EDISON
He’s basically my father. Since my real father decided to leave us. My Uncle took care of us with the family and the money which wasn’t easy on a cop’s salary.
ANDREW
Sorry man. How are you holding up?
EDISON
Good. I’m good. Being a cop is dangerous. He knew the risks. Okay, I know what you all are thinking. We’re finally going to meet Edison’s family. But they aren’t like you all. They’re Bordertown folks. It’s a whole different mindset. So, Andrew, they will talk about you in Spanish, Sarah, don’t talk about your liberal stuff they’ll just think you’re crazy, and Megan, you are not a Lesbian.
MEGAN
Is your family homophobic?
EDISON
No, they just think that all Lesbians are like Ellen, so they’ll want you to make jokes.
MEGAN
Understood.
BRITTANEY
What about me?
EDISON
You don’t worry about anything. You’re carrying my mother’s grandchild. She’ll automatically love you. Just… be prepared for her to feed you a lot. You like tamales right?
INT. EDISON’S HOUSE - DAY
The group enters the house. An older Hispanic woman in her fifties enters the walkway.
DELIA
Mijo? Mijo!
Delia walks up to Edison and pinches his cheeks and hugs him.
EDISON
Mama please, not in front of my friends.
DELIA
You barely called me, and you haven’t visited me in months.
EDISON
Because I have a life.
Delia slaps Edison’s arm.
DELIA
(In Spanish)
You call knocking up a girl a “life”?
Delia looks at Brittaney and smiles.
DELIA
And you must be Brittaney.
Delia hugs Brittaney and then places her hand on her belly.
DELIA
You haven't been eating much, have you?
BRITTANEY
I uh…
DELIA
There’s Barbacoa in the kitchen,
EDISON
From Raul’s? Oh man, y’all are in for a treat.
The group enters the kitchen. Edison’s two sister’s GLORIA and CELENIA are sitting on the couch.
GLORIA
Well well well, it's college boy. Oh, and soon to be father.
EDISON
You are just jealous.
CELENIA
Of what?
DELIA
Hey, behave, we have guests. I’m gonna warm some tortillas.
EDISON
I’ll help.
Edison and his Mom enter the Kitchen. She turns on the stove and places a Comal. On top, She places some corn tortillas on the Comal.
EDISON
So, how... How did Uncle Julio… Did he get too close to a cartel case?
DELIA
No. Heart attack.
EDISON
What?
DELIA
He ate fast food for lunch and dinner every day.
EDISON
I know, but he always wanted to go down fighting.
DELIA
In a way he did. He fought his heart. Flip the tortillas.
Edison flips the tortillas.
In the living room.
CELENIA
So, you’re Andrew. The uptight one.
ANDREW
Uptight?
MEGAN
Told you.
GLORIA
So, do you know the gender?
BRITTANEY
No. Not yet.
CELENIA
Edison told us a lot about you.
BRITTANEY
All good, I hope.
GLORIA
Oh yeah. He’s crazy about you.
CELENAI
So, when's the wedding?
BRITTANEY
Uhhhh….
In the kitchen.
DELIA
Brittaney is nice. Are you two getting married?
EDISON
I…
DELIA
Edison?
EDISON
I'm crazy about Britt. I want to marry her but I… I am afraid of ruining it.
DELIA
Edison, that woman is lucky to have you. You're not like your father. You actually have a heart.
Delia removes her engagement ring.
DELIA
Here.
Edison takes the ring.
EDISON
Why did you keep this? He didn’t really love you.
DELIA
I kept it because if I ever needed money, I knew I could sell it. But now… I think it deserves a second chance. To be a part of something real. Something that you and Brittaney have.
They smile at each other.
EDISON
Thanks mom.
In the living room, Edison and Delia return carrying a stack of tortillas and Barbacoa.
GLORIA
Mom, Edison and Brittaney aren’t getting married.
DELIA
(In Spanish)
Hush, show Edson’s white friends how to eat Barbacoa.
They all eat.
EDISON
So, when are y’all spreading the ashes?
DELIA
We’re keeping them in the Urn above the fireplace.
EDISON
What? You can’t do that. You know what Uncle Julio wanted.
DELIA
Edison, I am not buying fireworks, so I can launch his ashes into the sky.
EDISON
It’s what he wanted.
DELIA
No.
That night…
Everything is dark and quiet in the house. Edison tiptoes up to the fireplace. Andrew is behind him.
ANDREW
Is this why you woke me up? To steal your Uncle’s ashes?
EDISON
Yes.
ANDREW
Edison, no.
EDISON
Andrew, He did not want to be a house decoration. Now go find something to put him in.
Andrew leaves and then returns with a Tupperware.
EDISON
Seriously, a Tupperware box?
ANDREW
It was either this or an almost empty salsa jar.
EDISON
Fine.
Edison dumps the ashes into the Tupperware box and closes it. He pulls out a bag of sand and puts it in the urn.
INT. CAR - DAY
The group is in the car as they drive away from Edison’s house.
EDISON
Okay, someone look up fireworks stand. We’re gonna give him a hero's sendoff.
END.
