Now that the Emmy nominations are out, I'll be taking a look each week at some of the major categories! Here's a look at the races for Supporting Actor & Actress in a Limited Series, Anthology Series or TV Movie!
SUPPORTING ACTOR IN A LIMITED OR ANTHOLOGY SERIES OR TV MOVIE NOMINEES:
Jason Bateman, DTF St. Louis (HBO)
Richard Gadd, Half Man (HBO)
David Harbour, DTF St. Louis (HBO)
Richard Jenkins, DTF St. Louis (HBO)
Charles Melton, Beef (Netflix)
Nick Offerman, Death by Lightning (Netflix)
While it was a bit suspect that DTF St. Louis submitted Jason Bateman and David Harbour in the Supporting category, it obviously paid off because the show earned half of the six slots in this category with both Bateman and Harbour nominated along with Richard Jenkins. There's always the risk of vote splitting when a show is represented this much in a category but I don't think that will happen because Harbour really is the performance that got the most attention and so I think most voting for a St. Louis actor will go for Habour. Bateman and especially Jenkins should be in the "happy to be nominated" camp. The other show to really clean up in nominations in the Limited field was Beef and Charles Melton's performance was widely praised so he seems the most likely to score an upset. Richard Gadd got a lot of Emmy love for Baby Reindeer so I wouldn't totally rule him out except that Half Man did not get a lot of Emmy love. And ditto for Nick Offerman, who was widely praised in a show that just didn't make much of a dent with Emmy voters.
Will Win: David Harbour, DTF St. Louis
Power Ranking the Rest by Chance of a Win:
2. Melton 3. Gadd 4. Bateman 5. Offerman 6. Jenkins
Should Win: Nick Offerman, Death by Lightning
Should Have Been Nominated: Shea Whigham, Death by Lightning
SUPPORTING ACTRESS IN A LIMITED OR ANTHOLOGY SERIES OR TV MOVIE NOMINEES:
Linda Cardellini, DTF St. Louis (HBO)
Dakota Fanning, All Her Fault (Peacock)
Laurie Metcalf, Monster: The Ed Gein Story (Netflix)
Joy Sunday, DTF St. Louis (HBO)
Youn Yuh-jung, Beef (Netflix)
Constance Zimmer, Love Story: John F. Kennedy Jr. & Carolyn Bessette (FX)
Just like the Supporting Actor race, this race seems to be coming down to a Beef vs. DTF St. Louis battle. While Linda Cardellini seems to be the odds-on favorite for the win at the moment, I am just not convinced her role in the series was substantial enough for her to get the win. Right now, I am going with Oscar winner Youn Yuh-jung for Beef. I feel especially strong about that since her co-star Cailee Spaeny was surprisingly omitted so she has all the Beef voters to herself. Cardellini is certainly not out of the race especially with a lot of love for St. Louis. She is competing with co-star Joy Sunday but I don't think Sunday is much of a threat. Dakota Fanning and Laurie Metcalf are Emmys darlings but Fanning's performance just doesn't seem like Emmy-win worthy and Metcalf probably won't take home the gold for this particular performance when she has been awarded for other, more acclaimed shows. Zimmer is an interesting inclusion here as many wanted her in but worried it would be Naomi Watts. This shows they really were watching and awarding the best Supporting performance in the series. But a win still seems very far fetched.
Will Win: Youn Yuh-jung, Beef
Power Ranking the Rest by Chance of a Win:
2. Cardellini 3. Metcalf 4. Zimmer 5. Fanning 6. Sunday
Should Win: Constance Zimmer, Love Story: John F. Kennedy Jr. & Carolyn Bessette
Should Have Been Nominated: Cailee Spaeny, Beef
