“BACK FROM BREAK”

Open inside
Andrew and Edison’s dorm. It is empty. The door opens and Andrew and Edison
enter. They drop their bags. Andrew begins unpacking his things. Edison falls
on his bed.
EDISON
I can’t
believe it’s over. Why is it over? We barely had a break.
ANDREW
We had almost
a month.
EDISON
It wasn’t
enough.
Edison reaches
under his pillow and pulls out a Milky Way bar. He unwraps it and starts eating
it.
ANDREW
It’s a new
semester man. New classes, new professors, and maybe even new friends.
EDISON
Is that
suppose to make me feel better?
Brittaney
appears in the doorway. Edison see her and sits up. They smile at each other.
Brittaney runs over to Edison and the two start making out.
ANDREW
Seriously
guys?
Sarah appears
in the doorway. Andrew sees her. They faintly smile at each other.
SARAH
Hey.
ANDREW
Hey.
SARAH
Hey Britt.
BRITTANEY
Hey.
SARAH
Edison.
Edison doesn't
answer and instead continues to make out with Brittaney.
Calvin appears
next to Sarah.
CALVIN
{To Sarah}
Hey you ready?
Sarah nods.
SARAH
Hey Calvin and
I are going to The College Club. Y’all wanna join.
BRITTANEY
Yeah.
EDISON
Now?
BRITTANEY
Don't worry
we’ll continue later.
SARAH
Andrew?
ANDREW
Sounds great.
Edison and
Brittaney stand up.
ANDREW
Y’all go
ahead. I’m gonna finish unpacking.
Sarah, Calvin,
Edison, and Brittaney leave. Andrew continues unpacking.
FLASHBACK
Andrew and
Sarah are kissing outside of the dorm building elevator. Sarah pulls back.
SARAH
I’m sorry. I
shouldn’t have done that.
ANDREW
But you did.
SARAH
I knew you
liked me. Or at least I had a feeling.
ANDREW
Why didn’t you
say anything?
SARAH
I was waiting
for you to say something.
ANDREW
Ok. Well I’m
gonna say it now. Sarah I like you. I think you’re amazing. There.
SARAH
Andrew-
ANDREW
So how’re you
gonna break it to Calvin?
SARAH
Break what to
him?
ANDREW
Well you're
obviously gonna break up with him now right?
SARAH
No.
ANDREW
What?
SARAH
Andrew, I like
Calvin. We have a good relationship. I’m not just gonna ditch him just because
you say you like me.
Andrew looks
defeated.
SARAH
Andrew I
really believe that you’ll find someone.
ANDREW
What if that
someone’s in front of me?
SARAH
Andrew. I’m
sorry. I hope we can be friends.
ANDREW
I don’t think
we can even be that.
Andrew exits
the building.
PRESENT DAY
INT. THE
COLLEGE CLUB - DAY
Andrew enters
The College Club and takes a seat with Edison, Brittaney, Sarah, and Calvin.
BRITTANEY
So what
classes is everyone taking?
ANDREW
I’m taking my
second history.
CALVIN
I’m taking a
creative writing class.
EDISON
Me too!
Edison and
Calvin high five. Andrew looks confused.
CALVIN
What about you
Britt?
BRITTANEY
Spanish.
As the group
talks, Andrew begins to zone out. The noise around him becomes nothing more
than echos. Sarah stares at Andrew with concern.
INT. ANDREW
& EDISON’S DORM - NIGHT
Andrew and
Edison enter their dorm.
ANDREW
So I guess you
and Calvin are best buds now.
EDISON
I guess. He’s
a cool guy. Said he could get us into parties.
ANDREW
Huh.
EDISON
You alright
dude?
Andrew sits on
his bed.
ANDREW
Sarah and I
kissed.
EDISON
Whoa whoa whoa
hold up. When?
ANDREW
Before we left
for winter break.
EDISON
That was like
a month ago and you didn't tell me?
ANDREW
She just wants
to be friends.
EDISON
Is that really
such a bad thing? I mean you two are good friends.
ANDREW
Maybe you’re
right.
EDISON
Maybe?
ANDREW
And who knows,
maybe I’ll meet someone this semester.
EDISON
That’s the
spirit. Now, what should we do now?
ANDREW
I’m going to
bed. We have classes tomorrow remember?
EDISON
That’s exactly
why I want to do something.
ANDREW
Goodnight
Edison.
INT. AMERICAN
LITERATURE CLASS - DAY
Andrew enters
the classroom and takes a seat. A hispanic girl appears next to him. Her name
is GABBY
GABBY
Is this seat
taken?
ANDREW
No.
Gabby takes a
seat next to Andrew. She smiles.
GABBY
I’m Gabby.
ANDREW
Andrew.
The professor
walks in. Andrew smiles.
INT. ANDREW
& EDISON’S DORM - DAY
Andrew enters
his dorm. Edison is at his desk typing on his computer.
ANDREW
Are you
actually doing homework?
EDISON
It’s for
creative writing. I have to write a short story.
ANDREW
What’s it
about?
EDISON
Well at first
I started writing Fifty Shades of Grey fan fiction which then morphed into Star
Wars fan fiction and then that morphed into Harry Potter fan fiction. Wanna
hear what I have so far?
ANDREW
Sure.
EDISON
The wizard
pulled out his wand. The jedi’s lightsaber ignited. Mr. Grey pulled out his
whip and-
ANDREW
You know what,
I’m good.
EDISON
Suit yourself.
How was classes?
ANDREW
Most of them
easy. I did meet someone. Her name is Gabby.
EDISON
Gabby? Who’s
Gabby?
ANDREW
Someone I met
in Literature.
EDISON
Oh boy.
ANDREW
What?
EDISON
I just don’t
want this to be another Sarah situation.
ANDREW
Relax. I
learned my lesson. I’m gonna get to know her better and then I’m gonna ask her
out. No more being scared.
EDISON
Good for you
man.
There is a
knock at the door. Andrew answers it. It is Sarah.
SARAH
Hey. Can we
talk?
ANDREW
Sure.
Sarah enters
the dorm. Andrew and Sarah look at Edison to leave. Edison rolls his eyes and
gets up to leave.
EDISON
This is my
dorm too you know.
Edison leaves.
SARAH
I wanted to
apologize.
ANDREW
For what?
SARAH
I feel like I
shot you down.
ANDREW
Sarah it’s ok.
I’m fine. I’m over it.
SARAH
So you're ok
with being friends?
ANDREW
{Smiling}
Of course.
Sarah smiles
back.
ANDREW
Wanna go get a
milkshake?
SARAH
Yeah.
INT. THE
COLLEGE CLUB - NIGHT
Andrew and
Sarah sit at a table in The College Club. They laugh and drink milkshakes.
Andrew sees Gabby.
ANDREW
Hey I’ll be
right back.
Andrew leaves
and goes up to Gabby.
ANDREW
Hey.
GABBY
Hey. Andrew
right?
ANDREW
Yeah.
GABBY
You here with
your girlfriend?
Gabby gestures
at Sarah.
ANDREW
No. She’s a
friend.
GABBY
So you’re
single?
ANDREW
Yes.
GABBY
I find that
hard to believe.
Andrew and
Gabby laugh. Sarah sees this and looks confused.
ANDREW
I just wanted
to say hi. If you ever want to hang with my group you can.
GABBY
I’d like that.
ANDREW
Cool. Well, I
should get back. See you in class.
GABBY
Bye.
Andrew returns
to Sarah.
SARAH
Who was that?
ANDREW
Gabby. We met
in Literature.
SARAH
Are you two…
ANDREW
No. Not yet at
least.
SARAH
Oh. Well I’m
sure it’ll work out.
ANDREW
Thanks. Here
I’ll get you another shake.
Andrew picks
up their glasses and leaves. Sarah looks over at Gabby.
