FADE IN:

EXT. NEIGHBORHOOD CUL-DE-SAC - EARLY EVENING

An affluent neighborhood cul-de-sac of nice houses sits in the suburbs of Hartford, Connecticut.

EXT. SMITH HOUSE - EARLY EVENING

Terri’s house sits in the middle of the cul-de-sac.

INT. FIRST FLOOR - EARLY EVENING

MICHELLE (40), PETER (43), BRITTNEY (19), BOBBY (10), and TERRI (15), gather around the first floor.

Michelle sits on a mahogany brown loveseat along with Peter.

She is knitting what appears to be a sweater.

Peter is glancing at a newspaper.

Bobby is on the floor reading what appears to be a children’s book (Think Dr. Seuss!).

Terri is looking up while sitting in her brown recliner in a tense position.

Brittney is doing homework on the sofa.

Peter then puts the newspaper down and turns towards Terri.

PETER
Terri, are you okay?

TERRI
(timidly)
Yeah Dad.

Brittney looks up at Terri.

BRITTNEY
Failing to conceal how you feel?

Terri rolls her eyes.

TERRI
Okay, we are not talking about Frozen at the moment.

Brittney laughs and returns to her homework.

TERRI (CONT'D)
Yeah, you laugh. Don’t you have your own share of problems with school at the moment?

BRITTNEY
Just wait until you are applying to nursing school, Terri.

Taken aback, Terri glares at Brittney as she gets up.

Michelle stops knitting, places her work on the coffee table, and gasps as she turns towards Brittney.

MICHELLE
That’s enough, Brittney.

She soon focuses her attention on Terri as Peter exits the living room and into the kitchen.

MICHELLE (CONT’D)
So, any plans going on for the next couple of weeks?

TERRI
We have class officer elections coming up in a few weeks and I am also working on student council related things.

KITCHEN

Overhearing the conversation, Peter grabs cooking utensils to start on what appears to be dinner.

PETER
Class officer?

TERRI (O.S.)
Yes Dad. Class president.

BACK TO LIVING ROOM

Brittney looks up from her homework and gets up from her place. She places her textbook on the coffee table.

Bobby then looks up at Michelle.

BOBBY
Mommy, I’m done reading. Can you sign this paper for me?

MICHELLE
Of course.

Brittney sits down on the couch.

TERRI
On a change of subject, I have been hearing a lot about college, goals, and everything under the sun in homeroom.
(beat)
And imagine all the teen slang.

BRITTNEY
(to TERRI)
Like, on fleek?

TERRI
More like what’s the latest in dank memes.

Michelle’s eyes widen as she raises her eyebrows.

MICHELLE
Kids these days.

Michelle turns to Terri.

TERRI
To be honest, Mom, I am still figuring out what my aspirations would be. Of course I want to go to college. I’ve been waiting for God to move.

MICHELLE
(with a sigh)
Terri, listen. Waiting on God’s plan is good. But waiting does not mean doing nothing and expecting for things to happen. You have to be an active participant in the things you are passionate about.

Terri smiles.

Peter returns to the living room.

PETER
Dinner will be ready in about fifteen minutes.

The family members then get up and leave the living room.
