Put Me In Season 3 Episode 1: Back On The Mound

CARTER walks into the dugout. It is his first practice with pitchers and catchers reporting.

LEWIS
You ready?

CARTER
I’ve pitched before. This will be a breeze.

LEWIS
I would hope so. You’re our star pitcher, after all.

CARTER
Trust me, I’ll be even better this season than I was last season.

LEWIS
That’ll be tough, but at least you believe in yourself.

CARTER
I’m trying to build up my confidence this season.

LEWIS
I gathered as much. Now get out on the mound and toss a few balls to Ray.

CARTER walks onto the mound and picks up a baseball. He throws it straight into the ground. RAY runs up to him.

RAY
What was that?

CARTER
Um...you...didn’t look like you were ready so I made a throwaway pitch. Didn’t want to hit you when you weren’t looking!

RAY
You don’t have to lie. I saw the whole thing.

CARTER
Fine. But I promise, I’m even better this season than I was last season.

RAY
Don’t tell Lewis that.

CARTER
Already did. Word for word.

RAY
That’s not good.

CARTER
So what’d you come here for?

RAY
Oh! To tell you the first pitched sucked.

RAY jogs back to the catchers box. CARTER throws another pitch into the ground, followed by five wild pitches. LEWIS jogs to the mound.

LEWIS
You’re really looking even better than you did last season, Carter.

CARTER
Just jitters. I’m sure they’ll work there way out by the time I’m actually facing some batters. In fact, I think I’m just thrown off a little by not having anyone in the batters box.

LEWIS
I’ll stand there for you.

LEWIS walks to the batters box and pretends to be batting, despite not holding a bat. CARTER throws a pitch and it drills LEWIS on the side. LEWIS looks mad.

LEWIS
That’s enough of you today.

CARTER walks off the mound. He is joined by another pitcher, MILES.

MILES
Rough day?

CARTER
Terrible.

MILES
I’m sure you’ll get better.

CARTER
I’m supposed to be the ace.

MILES
Oh...you are? Sorry, I’m new here.

CARTER
This is my second year. I’ll admit to have been a bit nervous last season, and very on edge about my future with this team. And now that I’ve felt confidence, I start doing terrible.

MILES
Nothing to worry about.

CARTER
Kind of is. I have a lot to prove.

MILES
You’ll be fine.

MILES gets up and walks to the mound. He proceeds to throw strong pitches. CARTER stares, wondering how he will be able to compete.
