Put Me In Birthday Special: Carter’s Birthday

CARTER has just arrived at the Charleston Capitols’ home field when he sees RAY.

RAY
Happy birthday, Carter!

CARTER
How did you know it was my birthday?

RAY
You sent me a text saying ‘today is my birthday.’

CARTER
I forgot about that. Thanks Ray!

RAY
Are you excited to be back?

CARTER
As excited as I ever will be. I think this is going to be my best season yet.

RAY
Lewis doesn’t.

CARTER
What do you mean?

RAY
He thinks he’s losing control over the team.

CARTER
Is he here yet?

RAY
He’s in the dugout.

CARTER walks away and meets LEWIS in the dugout.

CARTER
Lewis! Good to see you again.

LEWIS
This season’s gonna suck.

CARTER
Why would you say that? I feel well-rested from the off-season and am ready to pitch.

LEWIS
We practically have no one else though.

CARTER
I just saw Ray...

LEWIS
I meant for pitchers. Pitchers and catchers report next week and all I already have is you, Ray, and some other guys. Most of them new.

CARTER
I’m sure it’ll be fine.

LEWIS
You don’t really know that. I’m scared about my job!

CARTER
All I can say is I’ll do my best to pitch well enough for you to not get fired.

LEWIS
Happy birthday, by the way.

CARTER
I texted you too?

LEWIS
No, Ray told me. We had a good laugh about it. Then we bought you a cake.

CARTER
That wasn’t necessary!

LEWIS
No, it was. You try not laughing at something funny.

CARTER
I’m talking about the cake. Where is it?

LEWIS
Some of it is in my stomach, some of it is in Ray’s stomach, and the rest is in the trash.

CARTER
You didn’t think of saving any for me?

LEWIS
It’s not something that came up, no.

CARTER
What kind was it?

LEWIS
Strawberry.

CARTER
My favorite!

LEWIS
Sorry about that. But I’ll make it up to you. How would you like to start the first game this season?

CARTER
I thought that was already decided upon.

LEWIS
Work with me here.

CARTER
Yes Lewis, I’d love to start the first game this year!

LEWIS
That’s more like it.

CARTER
Since there’s no cake, I guess I’ll get going. Gotta work on my pitching ahead of when pitchers and catchers are actually supposed to report.

LEWIS
Good idea. And I’ll work on my coaching.

CARTER
How so?

LEWIS
I don’t know. Go along now.
