Bar Exam Season 3 Episode 7: Bumpy Road Act

REAGAN, MADISON, SAM, ADAM, CHASE, LINCOLN, and LORENZO are all sitting in the House chamber. They all sit in silence.

ADAM

Is this silence about that little thing last week?

MADISON
That little thing? My bill failed. Thanks Chase!

CHASE
Why point out just me?! Reagan was against it too!

MADISON
Thanks Reagan!

REAGAN

Hey, I have a job to do. It’s nothing personal. You’ll thank me later for not voting for that bill.

LORENZO
What bill?

MADISON
Bill of Lights. Remember?

LORENZO

Nope.

MADISON
Probably for the best. Alright, let’s move on. Anyone have any ideas this week?

ADAM

I still sense some tension. How about this: I’ll write a bill, and you guys make a collective decision. Doesn’t matter if you vote Yay or Nay. Just something in unison. Got it?

CHASE
What’s the bill about?

ADAM
Bumpy roads.

SAM

Oh, so you want to pass an infrastructure bill? The roads could really use some work. Good thinking!

REAGAN

Yeah, I’d vote for that.

ADAM

The idea is to make roads more bumpy.

SAM

Terrible idea.

Everyone else nods their heads.

ADAM

Great! So now I’ll write a bill about a cause I hold near and dear to my heart, and you’ll all vote in unison!

MADISON
Lorenzo, I’m surprised you’re not getting on board with this.

LORENZO

While bumpy roads sounds like a lot of fun, I have to vote with the group. You know, keep it together.

SAM [sarcastically]

Thank you for your huge sacrifice.

LORENZO
You’re welcome.

ADAM

Alright, I’m gonna write the bill now. Wish me luck, even though I already know I have six Nay votes.

ADAM shifts his focus to his computer, where he writes the Bumpy Roads Act.  When it is time, ADAM presents the bill to the rest of the chamber.

ADAM

I won’t waste anybody’s time. This is a bill to make roads more bumpy. I already know it doesn’t have support from my closest colleagues, but I would still like to make a case for this bill. Who wouldn’t want roads that are more bumpy? It would be very fun.

Most people chuckle at ADAM’s bill and its ridiculous nature. REAGAN rises.

REAGAN

If anyone needs help deciding on their vote, as one of Adam’s closest colleagues, I can confirm what he said about us not voting for the bill. Right guys?

MADISON, CHASE, SAM, and LINCOLN all nod their heads.

LINCOLN

Lorenzo, nod your head.

LORENZO also nods his head. The SPEAKER brings the bill to a vote, where it fails, 1-99. The legislature is dismissed.

SAM

Good thinking Adam. At least you supported your bill. That’d be pretty pathetic if you spent time writing a bill and then voted Nay.

ADAM
Uh huh.

MADISON
You did vote Yay, right?

ADAM
Sure.

MADISON
Tell the truth.

ADAM

Fine. I voted Nay.

CHASE
Who would vote Nay on their own bill?!

ADAM
I wanted to join you all in collectively deciding on an outcome for a bill.

LINCOLN
I’m just gonna say it: if you voted Nay, what kind of idiot would vote Yay?

SAM

Could’ve been that older woman across the aisle. She doesn’t talk much so I really don’t know what her voting history is like.

LORENZO
Regardless of who it was, at least we can all agree it wasn’t me. Alright, let’s get going now. Bye.

LORENZO speed walks out of the chamber.

LINCOLN
Wait a minute. Lorenzo did say he thought bumpy roads would be fun.

REAGAN
Not to mention his reluctant head nod when I asked that question.

ADAM

Safe to say Lorenzo is the Yay vote?

CHASE
Sadly, I wouldn’t be surprised.

ADAM
We all had an agreement to vote the same way!

SAM
Some things are just too hard to pass up for Lorenzo. I guess bumpy roads is one of them.

REAGAN, SAM, ADAM, CHASE, LINCOLN, and MADISON all leave.
