Put Me In Season 3 Episode 2: Throwing Practice

CARTER arrives to the field. He meets RAY by the dugout.

RAY
Great job last week!

CARTER
Are you being sarcastic, or are your standards for me that low now?

RAY
Sarcastic. I still have high standards for you. Just...do better this time.

CARTER
That’s the goal.

LEWIS walks over to RAY and CARTER.

LEWIS
So I have a different thing in my for you today, Carter.

CARTER
Oh no. Don’t even tell me I’m moving to the outfield!

LEWIS
No, but I’m going to leave you off the field today.

CARTER
All pitchers pitch, that’s kind of the point of this. Also, is this why you called me here earlier than everyone else?

LEWIS
You bet. I want you to practice in a place you’re somewhat familiar with.

CARTER
Wouldn’t that be the mound?

LEWIS
No, you’re familiar with that. I’m said SOMEWHAT familiar with.

CARTER
Um...where?

LEWIS
The bullpen!

CARTER
The bullpen?! I haven’t been a reliever since the first game and we all know I don’t warm up in there.

LEWIS
Give it a try today.

RAY
Lewis, with all due respect, I kind of need to catch everyone. I can’t just be out in the bullpen with an empty mound. That wouldn’t be fair to everyone else.

LEWIS
You make a solid point...I guess I’ll have to catch for Carter! Carter, follow me.

CARTER reluctantly follows LEWIS to the bullpen.

LEWIS
You had good times here, remember?

CARTER
I was here for less than a game. And most of them bullied me, too.

LEWIS
Really? Did you report that to Jamie?

CARTER
No.

LEWIS
You should do that.

CARTER
I’m not gonna worry about it. It was the beginning of last season. Time to focus on being good this time around.

LEWIS
Fair enough.

LEWIS crouches down in a catchers’ position.

CARTER
Any reason why you’re crouched down where I’m supposed to stand?

LEWIS
Whoops.

LEWIS quickly runs to the other side of the bullpen and crouches down. CARTER throws a perfect pitch, which LEWIS fails to catch.

LEWIS
Good throw!

CARTER
Ray was being sarcastic with me earlier, so I’m really not sure what’s going on here.

LEWIS
That was not sarcasm. A genuine compliment.

CARTER
Thank you.

After a pause:

CARTER
Are you gonna give the ball back now?

LEWIS
Nah, I think that’s enough for today.

LEWIS walks away limping due to crouching down. CARTER leaves.
