Brilliant Minds: Last week, NBC closed out the first season of its only new fall drama by airing two episodes, wrapping the show up on the first Monday of 2024, having put it on a month-long hiatus with just two episodes remaining. The ratings weren't disastrous, but they weren't good. The show drew a 0.21 at 9 PM, matching the 8 PM repeat but not exceeding it. At 10, it dropped to a 0.18. In both cases, the show narrowly beat out repeat competition from the other networks. CBS, airing solely repeats, drew the same nightly average as NBC that night (0.20), while a repeat-filled ABC was just a few hundredths behind, and even Fox News and TLC weren't far off from NBC. It was a night with absolutely zero broadcast competition, on a rare Monday where there was no NFL competition, and when college football managed just a 0.5, and Brilliant Minds still barely managed to avoid series lows for a finale airing that already felt like a burnoff. It was originally scheduled to air one episode each on the first two Mondays of the year, but NBC moved it up a week to get it off the air sooner. If that's not a sign that they just want to be through with it, I'm not sure what is. It's also been a non-factor on streaming, last hitting their top ten chart in October, when it wasn't even halfway through its run. NBC has three new dramas premiering midseason. I don't think any of them look like surefire hits, but I doubt all three will be worse renewal options than Brilliant Minds, so there's no reason to expect a "pity renewal" for this one. With NBC losing a full night, and Sundays come midseason, due to their NBA deal, they simply don't have the room to keep shows that are struggling to find any audience anywhere, especially one they only partially own. It ends its run where it's been for several weeks now: CERTAIN CANCELLATION.
St. Denis Medical: A few days ago, one of this season's freshmen did get word it would be back next season, with NBC picking up St. Denis Medical for a second season. That news came just before the show returned to an unimpressive new series low, but that doesn't matter for the time being, as the show is guaranteed to be getting a second chance. Where that second season will air remains to be seen, though it's certainly moving days thanks to the NBA deal. This is a correct prediction for me.
