Night Court: Just one week after I wrote about a horrific new low for The Irrational, which prompted me to break my longstanding rule of not downgrading shows after a single abnormally poor showing, I have to do it again. This week, NBC's disasterclass of a Tuesday lineup became even more of a disaster, as they faced actual competition from CBS. St. Denis Medical held its own, and was steady from last week. The Irrational actually gained a bit, but I can't give it any credit for that, as the previous week's showing was a 0.10. So why did NBC's lineup look so exceptionally terrible this week? Night Court! The revival of the Emmy-winning 80s sitcom plunged half a point this week to horrible new low of 0.15, putting it in 0.1 territory for the first time, retaining an embarrassing 56% of its so-so St. Denis lead-in. A repeat of Night Court that aired on New Year's Eve (the only repeat they've aired this season thus far) managed a 0.12, so this is only three hundredths above a holiday repeat. It's nearly impossible to emphasize just how embarrassing this performance is. This is nearly 50% below last year's low of 0.28, and the lowest rating of any NBC comedy this season, impressively managing to beat out that 0.16 that Lopez vs Lopez got versus the Paul/Tyson Netflix fight. I already thought this would be the last season of Night Court heading into the season, but I was willing to change my mind if it kept up its decent early-season ratings, premiering to a 0.28 and rose to a 0.32 in the next week. It has... certainly not done that, and I was pretty confident its goose was cooked after it became a regular 0.2 performer. Now, with eleven episodes to go, it's found a new low, and I can't imagine spring will be of any assistance for this show. I don't know how low it will go, but I do know it's not going to be a pretty season for Night Court. It has little else going for it, with a poor streaming performance (it hasn't made the top ten on Peacock once this season, the only NBC show this can be said about) and Warner Bros. co-producing it. NBC will need to make many cuts this season as they pare down their scripted offerings thanks to the NBA deal. This will be one of them. It's a LIKELY CANCELLATION.
The Irrational: As mentioned above, The Irrational rose a mighty 20% this week. Unfortunately, for the Irrational, that still meant it only managed a 0.12 in the demo, the lowest-rated original program on broadcast TV this week. Its abysmal 0.10 may be its low point for now, but it was clearly no fluke. I wrote a whole lot more last week about why this show won't be back, but this week's minimal improvement just reinforces my CERTAIN CANCELLATION call.
