CBS Renew/Cancel Week 12: The Neighborhood And The Equalizer Might Get Spinoffs, But What About Renewals?

Below are the Week 12 predictions for CBS Renew/Cancel, followed by an analysis. Underneath that is a poll as well as the interactive schedule, where you can create and share your own predictions. Let us know what you think in the comments!

For simplicity purposes, Hollywood Squares will appear in the predictions in the Wednesday at 10 pm time slot, where it will be airing starting next Wednesday. NCIS: Sydney also makes its debut in this week’s table to align with the interactive schedule, but no prediction will be made until after we know how it premieres.

Prediction Changes
-The Neighborhood is upgraded from Likely Cancel to Leans Cancel
-Hollywood Squares debuts as Leans Renew

Week 12 Predictions

The Neighborhood
CBS has been sending some very mixed signals about The Neighborhood lately. Someone could look at any one of these and argue The Neighborhood is anything from a Certain Renew to a Certain Cancel. The week started out ominously, with CBS Entertainment’s President Amy Reinsenbach going on a podcast produced by The Ringer and avoiding a question regarding the long-running sitcom’s profitability. Reisenbach also made the claim CBS cares about total viewers, and not any one specific demo (many of their recent renewal and cancelation decisions beg otherwise, yet it should be noted the network only reveals total viewership data for multi-platform viewing). But if it’s true CBS cares more about total viewers, they’re probably not too keen on renewing their least-viewed show as of their most recent multi-platform press release.

Then there’s the news that could be either very good or very bad for The Neighborhood: a spinoff starring the original characters of Malcolm and Marty is in development, with the final episode of the 20-episode seventh season to serve as the backdoor pilot. There are several outcomes that could come of this. One is that CBS is planning on wrapping up The Neighborhood but looking to keep the IP alive on the network, much like how Young Sheldon concluded but Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage took its place. Another is I’ve drastically underestimated CBS’s readiness to move on from The Neighborhood. Deadline’s coverage of the spinoff claims The Neighborhood is looking good to return for an eighth season, and CBS is aiming to air the sitcom and its spinoff side-by-side. (If that does happen, it would be a way to make a more cost-effective Neighborhood by presumably reducing the cast.)

My current prediction is The Neighborhood’s spinoff will be ordered to series, and replace the long-running sitcom on the schedule next season. It’s a decision CBS will likely have to make on their own, given how long they’ll have to wait before they can learn about audience reception to the backdoor pilot. I’ve been off by a season before though on when CBS will part ways with a series (see: Bob Hearts Abishola), and perhaps The Neighborhood is another one of those cases. I still predict it will not make it to the 2025-26 TV season, but will upgrade it to Leans Cancel this week.

The Equalizer
Like The Neighborhood, The Equalizer has a spinoff in development. This week saw casting news, showing the spinoff is still very much alive. I simply have a hard time believing shows like The Neighborhood and The Equalizer will be turned into franchises a la NCIS and FBI, when they can only be getting more expensive with new episodes performing unremarkably in multi-platform viewership. Maybe a few years ago it would be believable, but not now. What is believable is that CBS is exploring ways to keep the IPs alive. I don’t give The Equalizer’s spinoff as high a chance of being ordered as The Neighborhood’s, but I do believe its continued development bodes more harm than good for The Equalizer. The Equalizer is likely competing with its spinoff for a spot on the schedule.

Hollywood Squares
After being delayed by a week, Hollywood Squares premiered solidly for a winter filler game show on Thursday with a 0.36 Adults 18-49 Live + Same Day rating and 4.6 million viewers. The second episode will air tonight after the NFL playoffs, the third on Thursday, and every episode thereafter Wednesdays at 10 pm. The move to Wednesdays is an unfortunate one for a show that arguably has more ratings potential than its future lead-in, Raid The Cage. How Hollywood Squares performs on Wednesdays will give a better sense of its outlook, but for now there’s clearly promise. It starts out as Leans Renew.
